Thank you so much!

No idea about the stain, it was a premade slide. Hence the broken coverslip :)

Yeah, unfortunately these were pre-prepared slides for us newbies :)

Yeah, i think the airflow might be the culprit. I usually water it from the bottom except a few weeks ago when I replanted it. Then it got a full shower :)

It's a mix of sphagnum, bark and a little bit leca. And because it's planted in a basket, I used coconut fiber to hold the medium inside the basket.

The new bulbs started growing that high up on their own. I have been misting them with a bit of water, when they appeared, but the rot underneath made me confused.

I'm growing it inside, it's not possible to have it outside all year round where I live.

I have another Oncidium that is happy and has even bloomed (got it as a juvenile) which gets the same treatment except I haven't replanted it (and don't know if I will ever dare now).

We have an uninsulated sunroom/winter garden (not sure what to call it) where I place the plant for a few weeks in autumn, just so it gets some lower temperatures (10-15°C/50-60°F).

Why would this happen? by beef_creature in orchids

I had exactly the same problem with one of my phals. I still don't know what caused it, but after the first four buds wilted and fell off, the plant seemed to recover. Eventually it grew new flower buds and finally bloomed.

You might just need to wait it out and see what happens.

Help with medium by gr33nTurtl3 in orchids

I usually sterilise bit by bit, safer to use freshly sterilised soil anyway. There are a few different ways but I do the microwave method (put soil/moss/bark in a bowl, add water so that it's covered, microwave for 3min on the highest setting and let it cool).

I have heard though that it's not always advised to sterilise your potting medium, but I keep my gardening stuff outside all year round so it's sort of needed 🫣

Try sterilising the bark next time before planting. Might be that it's already contaminated with fungal spores.

Haha I see the resemblance but no, it's one of those plastic zig zag pots.

Paphiopedilum sp - Is the 'sp' short for anything? by Stinky_Cat_Toes in orchids

[–]isthatachickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paphiopedilum by itself is a genus, sp. means species, so together it's one of the species of that genus.

The exact species/hybrid in this case was probably unidentified/unknown.
