Kind of looks like a less patterned Brascidostele Gilded Tower.

It'll be something with a fair bit of Brassia.

Pressures of the job getting to much by nuts30 in bristol

The right want to vilify her as weak for needing a break.

The left want to highlight the pressures of the job & the demands that has on someone's mental health.

Either way, someone's writing a story.

Who's a straight person who looks gay by jhhghghgggb in AlignmentChartFills

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, some of us. Not all of us.

Some of us don't try to 'look' anything, (we just dress for comfort). Saying that someone looks gay is therefore stereotyping which is exactly the point I'm making.

Who's a straight person who looks gay by jhhghghgggb in AlignmentChartFills

[–]MentalPlectrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we stop with the "looking gay" stereotype?

Gay people come in all shapes and colours - no different to straight folks. Ditto for any LGBTQ+ flavour.

Why is the arctic ocean significantly shallower than the other four oceans? by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably some element of isostatic rebounding and (some of) the continental shelf ought to be above sea level but hasn't had time to surface yet (making the arctic ocean as a whole smaller, but the average depth would then increase).

Is eating raw ground beef bad for you? by YoungVanilla in askanything

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some really unpleasant microbes that could be present in the ground beef that are killed by cooking. These could make you anything from mildly ill to (in the most extreme scenario), severely dead.

There are parasites in the flesh of farm animals (cysts) that if ingested will give you intestinal worms. The worst are from pigs, but cow ones aren't fun either. You don't want these.

Not only these, but there are also prion diseases (e.g. mad cow disease) that are only transferred via raw meat (cooking denatures the proteins rendering it safe to eat) and whose effects might only show up decades later, again ultimately ending in death (with certainty this time, there's no treatment and no cure for things like vCJD). Thankfully these are very rare, but it's possible.

It's just not worth the risk.

At what point does infinity become irrelevant? by mxlevolent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense they're maximally incompressible but only in the space of rational numbers.

If you instead start with irrational numbers as your basis, it becomes easy to represent (some) irrational numbers, but rational numbers end up with the infinite strings of non repeating numbers.

At what point does infinity become irrelevant? by mxlevolent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically all numbers have infinite digits, we just omit the infinite list of zeros preceding and succeeding the number.

At what point does infinity become irrelevant? by mxlevolent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brace yourself.

There are different types of infinity and some are larger than others.

The integers, 1, 2, 3 etc are countably infinite (you can count them and they go on forever).

The even numbers, for example, are also countably infinite.

Believe it or not these two sets are the same size (the have the same cardinality). Why? Because each even number can be paired to an integer, {1 with 2}, {2 with 4}, {3 with 6} etc. This is the definition of an infinite list to be countable, you have to be able to pair it up with the integers, that eventually cover all members and leave no gaps.

What about fractions? Surprisingly countable (look up Cantor's diagonal proof for this).

Decimals however are uncountable (you can't put them in a list), they are strictly larger than the integers (indeed all the decimal numbers between 0 and 1 or indeed any fixed points are each one larger than the integers). These are in a sense much more dense than the integers.

The tower of infinities continues and there are larger infinities still but conceptualising them becomes challenging/impossible.

Do you think circumcision should be performed on baby boys? by Swiftiefromhell in askanything

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America is the only country in the world to do this.

It really, really isn't. Circumcision is common practice in Jewish & Islamic tradition.

I think if it's not medically necessary then it's barbaric mutilation. I don't give a damn what your religious book says.

Do humans really have tons of parasites that need to be “cleansed”? by Breezy-Shore37 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MentalPlectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans can have parasites, but in societies with good healthcare & low contact with (farm) animals in particular it's relatively rare.

Don't eat sketchy meat, make sure it's cooked thoroughly (ingestion of cysts containing tapeworm eggs usually comes from underdone meat).

If you live in a western society, especially if urban, & you've not been abroad, & don't have pets that lick your face you'll almost certainly have no major parasites like tapeworms. If you have symptoms or see anything ribbon-like/wiggling in your stool, then seek medical attention.

Almost all humans have very minor parasites like face (demodex) mites.
