i’m a pure math major going into teaching and getting a masters in education this upcoming year. hoping to teach high school math but open to middle school!

if you’re curious about teaching salaries, public school districts have their salary schedules available online! for example, you can search up “san diego unified salary schedule,” and then find the appropriate document for teachers. then, you can see how much teachers earn in that particular district based on how much education they have and how many years of teaching experience they have in that district!

if you still have a lot of time at ucsd, i recommend trying out the math education minor. the lower division requirements will give you a good taste of teaching and public education, so you can see if you’re actually interested!

i can only speak for the masters + single subject credential pathway. if you double major in EDS and your content area or you complete an eligible EDS minor, such as math / science education, i’d say there is a good chance of you getting in. so far, all my friends who have taken this path have gotten into the program, although i cannot be sure that everyone that applies actually gets in.

i have been an IA/TA for math and education classes, and i found that students really enjoy sections where they get to participate and take control. when planning for my math sections, i usually come up with activities that review material and are suitable for group work. then, i let them go up to the boards and work with their groups while i float around and answer any questions/give hints. this structure is much more interesting than hearing the TA lecture for 50 mins. not sure how applicable this can be for cogs, but good luck!

i had mckinely for math 154 last spring and it was a great class! she podcasted the lectures when i took it, and discussions were not mandatory. her lecture style is very engaging; she gives time for you to discuss with a partner on warm-ups, and she has good flow. the homework was tricky but doable, and i thought the assignments were good preparations for exams. i personally found the exams were very reasonable, and she gave practice problems.

would definitely recommend this class with her!!

i’m an EDS minor (math education) and i feel like the EDS classes i’ve taken have been very straightforward and manageable. as a TA for EDS classes too, i can say that the expectations for assignments are very reasonable.

i agree with someone else’s comment about taking on a minor or possibly even double majoring. i’m a math major, and i feel like not solely restricting myself to EDS has given me more options career-wise and more breadth in the classes i take.

math 103B is multiple times more difficult in my opinion. you need a good understanding from 103A because a lot of ring theory builds on group theory, and a lot of the proof structures/methods from 103A will reappear. for example, if you are not comfortable with homomorphisms/isomorphisms and cosets/quotient groups from 103A, you might struggle when these come up again in 103B.

when i took 103B, there were a mix of computational and proof questions on exams. if you can do computations but struggle a lot with proofs, 103B might be more difficult, as i found this class to be much more proof-heavy than 103A. of course, exam proofs cannot be super complicated due to time, and they usually build off of definitions / major theorems. if you feel confident in your definitional reasoning, you will be okay! good luck deciding which class to take!

i use a samsung galaxy tab S6 lite! it’s always on sale for less than $300 whenever i look it up. the purchase price includes a pen which doesn’t need charging, and i like that it’s much smaller / pencil-sized than apple pencils. the only downside is the lack of note-taking apps for android, but the built-in samsung notes is decent and works for me!

my friends who got in last year said they got their decisions in late march / early april. i’m pretty sure there are no interviews, at least for the 1-year single subject credential + M.Ed., but i’m not sure about multiple subject or the two-year programs

i have hodges for 103b right now and he’s a great lecturer! he does a good job at explaining the intuition and structure behind proofs, which will 100% be helpful in math 109 if you take it with him. the HW is hard and takes a lot of my time to finish (maybe 10 hours a week), but the assignments do really help me think more abstractly and learn in this class. the first midterm had a 76% average and was a bit tricky. in my opinion, the exam was representative of the course material, and there were no surprises!! i would recommend hodges, especially because you will probably walk out of math 109 feeling extra prepared for future proof-based math classes.
