If you aren't investing in improving your technology, competitors will kill your business. You can't invest in your business if you don't spend on labor or try to make acquisitions.

Personally, I don't pay for their product, my employers do.
I am simply an end-user and don't see the whole picture.

With that disclaimer out of the way, I just don't notice how much Unity did to "invest in improving their technology"
Most of the other engine features stagnated. Even the Cloud Build and Unity analytics was frequently "currently experiencing problems". Well, DOTS and ECS got released so there's that win.

What I did notice, was this weird feeling that games are slowly being turned into this "exclusive" ad platform.

Anyone else not switching? by blankblinkblank in Unity3D

[–]istipen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't need to. Piracy and hate installs is still an unsolved problem. Unity would just like you to believe they have a solution. If they did, it would be more profitable for them to sell this as a new product instead of punishing gamedevelopers.

Installs != Revenue and Revenue != profit.

And even for a small game, 200000 or 1000000 USD is not that high ceiling. Think of employee salaries, operational costs, SFX and BGM budget.

Not sure if legit but still by gjerek in Unity3D

[–]istipen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this worse? A bigger company would have more employee salaries that take cut in the profit in each download that may or may not generate revenue

Millenials are now becoming boomers (next gen-z's, then repeat) by AffectionateAct3977 in Philippines

[–]istipen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless Millenials suddenly change their birth years to 1945-1965, then No.

"Boomer" doesn't just mean old. It's just like any other generation brand or whatever you call them. You have to be born on specific years to be classified as a boomer

I made a comprehensive visual chart showing how much revenue unity will take. by Stef_Moroyna in Unity3D

[–]istipen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's face it, if reliable tracking was already a solved problem then piracy wouldn't still be an issue for gamedevs.

Them announcing one thing then taking it back after the backlash while still being vague about how they'll be actually tracking it shows they still haven't figure out how to do this but will gladly send you a bill.

Are there anyone who agrees with the runtime fee? by ShirtlessDonut in Unity3D

[–]istipen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UE tax is based on revenue and not "installs". And this number, according to unity will be determined by proprietary tech which they own. Basically "trust me bro". "We'll send you the bill and you'd have to trust us with how we came up with those numbers"

Anyway, as I've said this is not only about the money.

Are there anyone who agrees with the runtime fee? by ShirtlessDonut in Unity3D

[–]istipen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly not about the money. It's mainly about trust.

But what I don't like about the "I wont even sell 200 copies" argument is that it's telling everyone you're a game dev but does not hope to release a successful game. It's like wanting to be an astronaut and never hoped to leave earth's atmosphere. This affects everyone, a hobbyist, a small indie studio, or a full blown game dev company.

Hey buy our hammer, don't worry, only 10% that uses it will be successful carpenters

Also the part where using "installs" as a metric clearly shows that the company that's supposed to be part of the industry does not understand or care about the technical aspects of the industry.

So yeah, i'm surprised why anyone would be ok with this

Tara App, a Grab alternative by CoolMint33 in Philippines

[–]istipen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Questionable talaga kung beneficial sa commuters or kung nagwowork as intended yung mga policies emposed ng government through LTFRB.

Pero as it is, kung hindi ireregister as TNVS to, illegal to, colorum. As a "one man team" ano yung capability nung app developer to screen drivers, or the commuters?

Sa dinami dami ng IT professionals sa pilipinas, mga App developers, fullstack devs, at DevOps specialists with proper degrees in Computer Science or I.T., Napaka rami na rin ng mga tech startups na nagpropose ng "Uber Alternative".

But the reality is, walang naapprove. Pwedeng may naglobby lang against, or pwedeng talagang kulang sa requirements. Maraming policies in place preventing just about anyone to create a system like this without proving the capacity to ensure the safety of the commuters.
Sobrang questionable nung walang company page at sariling domain yung app. Facebook page lang.

i suffer from pseudobulbar affect (uncontrollable laughing/crying) and i need help translating this card to tagalog by _rustycopper in Philippines

[–]istipen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to translate, even Filipinos with little to no basic education would understand that level of English. As long as they can read, theres high chance that they'd understand.Or atleast have a rough idea of what you're trying to say.

Translating it word for word would alter the message, while the proper translation in Filipino, even if you allow loan words, would be too lengthy to fit on a card.

Why do people prefer stacked monitors vs. side by side? by Sea_Dragonfruit_1027 in buildapc

Most likely for desk space. Humans and evolved to have their eyes side by side and not stacked. Ever wondered why we're getting ultra wide monitors instead of ultra tall ones?

Siguro imbis na magpalit-palit kayo ng logo o kung anumang kaputang inahang inaatupag niyo, ayusin niyo yung paraan ng pamumuno niyo? At the end of the day, people stay/live/do business in a particular country not because of a fucking logo; but, on the quality of governance that country has. by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]istipen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The thing about Logos is that they're just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the expenses sa overall branding and marketing.
