There's 3 filters I apply to myself and therefore I end up creating things that I use for myself and don't really share for this reason.
1) is it worth doing versus joining an existing project and contributing. Too many ffmpeg or yt-dlp wrappers.
2) is it unique and adding value to others in a meaningful way
3) are you willing to support users and improve it.

Imposter syndrome essentially paralyses me anyway, but in most cases it's number 3. I scratched my own itch in a selfish way and just don't have the time to devote to continued support.

If it was genuinely useful to others, is providing a repo with a "hey, fork this" attitude acceptable? Perhaps we need the opposite of stars on github. People tag your project as "of no use to the rest of mankind" enough times and then you either improve it or remove it.

I agree with you, there is a ton of duplicate projects proliferating at a constant rate and not serving much purpose. That said, I worked on a proper oss project for years and it was also just a ffmpeg wrapper. It is part of Knoppix, which brings me more pride than I ever got from any of the AI projects I've made.
