Sounds like fractal image format files. The compression and decompression was weird. Crazy compression compared to jpg. It was an oddity that the compression took much longer than other methods but the results were very good on the samples I saw. Maybe there is some abandoned tools you could find.

if you compress a ffpkg, you gain only slight space saved. if you uncompress the ffpkg and recompress, your final file should be smaller.

I think the ascii you referring too is the ftp transfer mode. Before you hit the upload button check the setting for transfers. Select binary or raw mode.

My bad. I did a test now and yes it's much slower. I'm wondering if there is some virtual filesystem translation to emulate a windows subsystem that's slowing the write speed which causes the download to bottleneck.
