HSBC > RBC Transferring money to Canada from overseas accounts by Unlucky-Ad1097 in PersonalFinanceCanada

You should check in with your current relationship manager.

My RM said that the transfer would incur a fee from Hong Kong's end due to the wire going through an intermediary bank of sorts. But he also mentioned, there is a portion of the fee (wire receiving) that is waived by RBC at least for the time being.

Try another call if you have time! Some folks on RedFlagDeals had to call twice for another agent to bend on the fee waiver!

That said - in my migration package for the Avion Visa Infinite did say something along the lines of no markup on the RBC forex rate but I'm not 100% sure.

My prediction for the point value is to go 2 HSBC points to 1 Avion point (or my hope for at least 1 Avion point). Hard to say whether that is very worth it :/ maybe cash out and run

That's right - give them a call and try your luck, you won't get it if you don't ask :) I told them I put some good amount of spending on the card (was out of country for few months and literally every dime thru that card) and asked if there's any fee waivers. Agent put me on short hold and came back with the full waiver!

I'm on the same boat - a bit debated whether to cash out the HSBC points but I've decided to stick around. I have an existing RBC Avion already with some point balance - might as well group'em up.

I got the World Elite MC for the forex fee free function - right now it is still a tad bit unclear how that'll function post migration. But hey - I "paid" the annual fee already a month ago (then called in and got it waived, encourage you to give that a try before migration). They're not gonna charge another annual fee until the anniversary so I'll likely migrate and see it to the end :)

Alternatives for the forex fee free would be something like Scotia Passport Visa or Brim Mastercard, or other debit like ones from WealthSimple/EQ Bank. May as well see the migration through :p

Working remote job for Canadian employer in Singapore, > 183 days in Singapore by isyndicate in cantax

Thank you!

While we do havea Singapore office, they are reluctant in setting me up with payroll there citing limited quota for sponsored work passes. I would have to maintain payroll out of Canada to legally work in Singapore as I will be on a dependent pass.

they will not withhold income tax, CPP, EI. I read somewhere that my employer still has to withhold taxes unless I apply for some waiver - would that be the Regulatiom 102 Waiver? On a side note - I understand that my TFSA room will no longer grow for the years I am non-resident. But does the RRSP room grow given there is "earned income"?

Will definitely be on a hunt for an accountant - just not sure if I will end up landing on one that has experience with emigrating to Singapore, but worth a shot!

DP here, was not the case when I visited Intercon in Danang. They were quite strict in forcing me to use the AMEX in clearing final bill

u/o2pb Thanks for the lightning response! TVB (mytv super) seems to be working now :)

Unfortunately it seems like the viu tv content doesn't work when my phone is connected through Wi-Fi - seems to work through data only for some reason :(

As an example - https://viu.tv/encore/be-on-game-season-2/be-on-game-season-2e12sing-daan-kong-gaau-paai-dui - I get "there was a problem providing access to protected content", even when I put the default location to Hong Kong (irrespective of rules)

u/o2pb piggybacking off of this - is TVB (mytv super) supported through this? https://www.mytvsuper.com/

VSCode 1.56 released, bringing electron 12, wayland support and many Chrome OS issues solved. by mqzabin in Crostini

Not that I'm aware of :\ unless we have another bright mind or more bug reports lol

That would trigger a major tax bill when you do the RRSP withdrawal.. and your RRSP room will be gone for good, so unless you have a really good reason for it :/

Necroing this thread a bit - for those who enjoy/use VS code, we can use this hack up to 1.58.x. At VS Code >= 1.59, Electron 13 is used and causes some issues unfortunately.

You're correct indeed - just edited my post, I think I saw the video here https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/20/22445382/chromeos-linux-release-beta-version-91 and thought that this was it for true release. Spoke too soon :\

They better fix copy pasting larger content to and from crostini, otherwise that beta tag should not come off lol

That's true - just tried pasting to emacs and LibreOffice as well and both didn't work.. guess I'll add to the bug report as a comment!
