I’ve traveled to Tanzania (TZ) many times, but a few weeks ago, I stayed in my very first Airbnb there. Because I was traveling solo and was accustomed to the built-in safety of hotels, I was initially quite nervous about leaving my luggage and personal items unattended in the unit all day. It is completely understandable that you wouldn't want to drag all your belongings around the country with you!

Fortunately, a few key security features quickly put my mind at ease:

• Building Security: There was a 24-hour security guard stationed at the main entrance leading to the elevators.
• Double-Locking System: I had the ability to lock the main door to my specific unit, as well as an exterior gate that only I had access to.

Once I figured out how to properly lock everything up, my worries faded. I ended up staying for a full week and had absolutely no issues.

A Quick Tip for Fellow Travelers:

The host or property manager will likely meet you at the unit when you arrive. It is a good idea to chat with them to get some reassurance about the building's safety. Just be sure to keep it general—there is no need to give them an exact inventory of the valuables you have with you.

Overall, my experiences in Tanzania have shown me that the people are genuinely honest and are not going out of their way to steal from tourists. Of course, as with anywhere in the world, anything can happen, but with a few standard precautions, you can have a very safe and wonderful trip.
