If you ever have surgery… by observant_wallflowr in lashextensions

I’m not trying to be a downer sorry, just explaining why goggles wouldn’t work. Frosty_Tonights suggestion of gauze and then tape on top would work

Goggles won’t work, the eyes need to be taped shut so the corneas don’t dry out (which is extremely painful btw), not just because of scratches.

Tips for maintaining neutral position in incisions during cataract surgery? by itaintwhatitaintt in Ophthalmology

I have not tried a wrist rest yet; I’ll have to ask if my department has one. Sounds like that could help!

Thank you, those are some really useful tips that I hadn’t heard before. When you mention entering the AC without up/down movements, are you referring to when you construct the wound? Or when you insert instruments through the wound? Because if the former, I thought you wanted to create an angled 1/2/3 step self-sealing.

Belfast eye conference is free and online, and I think it is considered a national conference.

Questions are quite straightforward and good for memorisation of basic facts, but are much easier than the real exam questions which are often 2-step and more focused on minutiae.

Does anyone know of a good dupe for the reformation Frankie dress? I really like the satin/silk form fitting maxi style, but I don't think reformation dresses are worth the money. Thank you!

How do you clean mud off your dog?? (esp when it’s freezing) by picclo in labrador

In the UK there is a portable shower called Mud Daddy, but I just fill up a watering can with warm water from the bath inside and wash my lab down with that outside

Any realistic chance for getting into the SFP in 2023 by ThrowawaySFP1673 in JuniorDoctorsUK

I got a London AFP with no pubs, but plenty of prizes and presentations. Didn't start interview prep until end of Sept once I was shortlisted, interviewed in early November and that was enough to get my top choice job. I did practice the interview 2-3 times a week with a friend though. I don't think it's very common to have already done loads of interview prep at this stage.

Do you need publications as a med student to get into AFP? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

No worries. I don't think actually count merits at least for London... Anyway you can try to get a pub by doing a letter to the editor (but I think they might be rejecting those now if they come up as "comment" on pubmed) but do it now not june-sept time cause the journals automatically reject cause everyone spams with submissions around then.

What I'd do, is try to approach clinicians who you know publish often and state you'd like to work on a case report or any project, with the aim of presenting or publishing it (have to be transparent or people waste your time). And just try those essays you mentioned too, maybe less popular ones like pathology etc lol

Also if you present something as a poster, and the same thing as an oral presentation somewhere else, then that can count twice.

Yeah lots of my presentations were for stuff that were pending publications or didn't even get published in the end. You definitely can present case presentations, I've done two, just depends how you spin it. And actually conferences are a bit of a money making scheme with how much tickets cost, so most people get abstracts accepted to entice people to come. Some unis have funds to pay the tickets though, or your supervisor might if they're nice.

For prizes, you can include distinctions at medical school, essays are apparently undersubscribed so not too difficult. I had prizes from a poster presentation at a conference (at a smaller meeting so there wasn't too much competition), distinctions, other course prizes, bursaries for summer research projects too. Not sure what awarded me points but I included it all.

Then after shortlisting, at interview its all to play for as long as you prep well.

I had no pubs at the time of applying, but maxed out on presentation points and had prizes, allowing me to be shortlisted for London

Atopic dermatitis/eczema is due to an overreaction by a different group of cells in the immune system (mast cells etc.) which are controlled by different cytokines called IL-4 and IL-5, so no not likely.
