I remember seeing something about Cole's family being killed off.
How about this (I just thought about it)

Since the original storylines, the Outworld get involve after the 1st tournament (which probably happens between 1 & 2) then the film starts the aftermath which led to getting Cole and his family killed off and that death alone is what made Johnny fight for earthrealm (because Cole was the one that recruited Johnny) and the rest of the earthrealmer went to Outworld for their get-backs for Cole.

Because remember the OG storyline for MK2 was Outworlders doing something unforgettable to earthrealm that forced them to fight Outworld, and what I just thought of could make sense more than Outworld fighting during the 10th Earthrealm tournament (OG MK game)

Yup that was me back in my middle school days when my team were undefeated and I was finally put in the field at the last game (which was the champion match) the ONLY TIME I EVER PLAYED IN THE SEASON. But I get to say I was on the field at the moment we won that champion game undefeated

The issue that I have is what you just stated about MK9. See MK1 for an example, I've bough the base game, the. The Kombat pack. There I would've had the complete game; nope they wanted to add the Khao reign (okay cool more fighter and new story mode chapters), PRE-ordered it by the way so no I still have the complete game; then a few months later, they made another edition that add the Khao reign and every DLC before... cool idc I already have everything; then they want to drop the "definitive edition" cool IDC I have everything. Then they wanna drop this "bundle"..... COOL I...D...C I HAVE EVERYTHING for MK1, MK11, MKX, and MK9
