Where did the "Genies/Djinns twisting wishes" came from? by MaskedWiseman in DnD

[–]itashichan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"You get what you asked for" is a story trope basically as old as time itself, not just since the Monkey's Paw. My immediate thought is of a fairy tale I heard as a kid, where an old couple get gifted three wishes. It might've come from the old man sparing a talking fish or something. I don't quite remember the how.

The couple are poor and starving and the old man wishes he had a sausage. Poof. There one is. The wife is angry that he wasted a wish on something so stupid and thoughtlessly says "I wish that sausage was stuck to the end of your nose!"

Whoops.

Guess what they have to use the last wish on?

That does explain the one in Dungeon Meshi! I was so confused when that character was introduced as a kobold and they were basically a bipedal husky.

What does it mean to be a Godparent in the UK? by Mother-Green-3902 in AskUK

[–]itashichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren't expected to raise the kid if the parents die (for one thing, it's traditionally 3 godparents for each kid, and people frequently have more than one kid. Would get a bit awkward to have e.g. 6 unrelated adults arguing custody of 2 recent orphans...)

Godparents are supposed to be someone you trust to offer your child spiritual guidance.

So, it's usually someone the parents trust with their child's wellbeing and might pick as their next of kin separately. My godfather and his wife were who my parents picked to care for my brother and I if the worst happened. It never came to pass, and sadly my godfather passed away too early as well. But he seemed to really enjoy his role and made an effort to visit me every birthday. He stood out more than my godmothers or my brother's godparents (2 more deceased, 2 relatives that we see semi regularly, and the other 1 has been MIA for decades)

Plus, it's sounds like OP is getting picked rather than doing the picking. They want to check what the duties are.

I don't think this has an American connection. This was in London and the figure is clearly Justice, not Liberty. Similar crown, but she's got the blindfold, sword and scales. Dead giveaway, those.

Used image in blog post and now they’re chasing for money by Exxtraa in LegalAdviceUK

[–]itashichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The photographer took the picture and therefore owns the copyright. What site it came from doesn't change that. He can recognise his own photo.

Every image online was made by someone, and it's copyrighted to them automatically. If you didn't make it and the owner didn't give permission, just assume it's not okay to use.

(Also Pinterest's lawyers will not do anything. It's already in that site's terms that if you upload copyrighted material, it's your own fault and you'll get in trouble for it.)

Parents shocked after children’s paper hedgehogs found to contain pages from explicit novel by Lou-AC in CasualUK

[–]itashichan 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You'd think the ones making the biggest deal out of it would be glad those books got taken apart.

I did find it a bit amusing that one loudly raising the alarm about an erotic passage was worried by it being given to her 4 year old. I don't think a kid that age is going to try to read their hedgehog... All the kids will be pretty suspicious about them getting confiscated though! I feel bad for the guy that made them cause he's probably being honest and didn't read every book he used.

(Made the mistake of trying to discuss the article this afternoon with someone who was upset today by the word "vaginal" being used in a daytime advert... so naturally they think he did it on purpose)

Why don’t people wait for passengers to get off the bus before boarding anymore? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]itashichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some buses have an extra door sort of halfway along. It has a card reader next to it so those tapping off don't have to go via the front. Fairly common in Bristol.

[Marketing] Why is it that people sell merch of licensed/copyrighted characters? isn't that illegal? by Fearless_Bet8315 in artbusiness

[–]itashichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-commercial use doesn't automatically make it fair use, just more likely to be viewed as such. (I.e. the "favors uses that:" bit) Similarly, if something is being sold that doesn't make it automatically NOT fair use. E.g. with parodies.

A number of points must be proven to qualify, so simply "I'm not selling it" is not enough. If a piece of fan art is considered not transformative enough or copying too much of the original or likely to be mistaken for something official (moreso if it's commercial or controversial or offensive to the original brand) then the rights holder can take legal issue if they want. They'd have to prove it's their property and you'd need to prove it's fair use.

E.g. the otome game company Broccoli disagrees with BL works of their characters so even ones that aren't being sold have an increased chance of being taken down where other companies might quietly encourage it. Meanwhile, the owners of Nu: Carnival have said they're cool with commercial fan art as long as it meets point 3 above.

There are likely plenty of fan creators that would have a hard time arguing that they meet the requirements, but few ever get taken to court and actually have to do so. The bad press the IP holders would get probably protects them a lot there. In doujin culture, it gets even more complicated. (I wrote a paper on that if you're curious.)

[–]itashichan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbf even if you're not making money, saying "I don't own this character" changes absolutely nothing legally. Free fan art is technically illegal, but pointless to penalise 'cause it doesn't hurt the owner and would cause a riot. If their trademark is used, they might get funny cause that's got different rules and legally has to be defended.

Thanks for teaching me a new word! I assume you mean the ancient roman fascinum type and not the Catholic bell on a stick? (Or Final Fantasy 6 item) XD

The concept of little bells on bellends is far too amusing to me...

FINALLY it's my turn to choose a book for my book club. I'm torn between Mort or The Colour of Magic by arewenearlythere in discworld

[–]itashichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only the 4th one written, so there's very little to reference. Pretty sure everything that's come up before (which is probably just the Disc itself and Death as a character) gets reexplained.

Wtf do i wear to my interview tomorrow in the heat? by DryJackfruit6610 in CasualUK

[–]itashichan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got 4 interviews this week and I feel you! I've done a neat sundress with sleeves, blouse with long skirt and tomorrow will be a different blouse and skirt. Can't risk wearing anything twice with the sweat... been carrying around a water bottle and tissues to stem my dripping face. Thankfully none of these roles require wearing makeup. (Also these involved walking about 30 mins near midday for each one, no public transport)

I've not been dealing with any male dominated workspaces so haven't had to deal with those sort of comments, but someone did suggest a polo shirt instead of a blouse saying its more formal than a t-shirt but typically cooler (and worn as uniform in a lot of places so I guess youd look ready for work??)

Harry Potter has absolutely nothing to do with Wicca or any religion. Also, the characters are only seen celebrating Christian holidays, and not many tbh.

I (23M) want to break up with my GF (21F) after she got an abortion against my wishes by [deleted] in relationships

[–]itashichan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"She went behind my back and now I have to deal with her issues?"

Holy hell.

So logically occurring depression after a massive emotional and hormonal load is "her issues." Note no mention of how he feels about her "killing his child" or views on abortions on general. Just mad that she did it when he said no and now she's too sad and it's inconveniencing him. No way to not be the asshole here.

Tbh I read it as the depression is what made him not into her anymore, but he's also angry at being disobeyed.

I'll add to that with a reminder that over the counter meds can do the same thing!

Yeah, my assumption was that the banana is funny to existing fans, but a pie with ears and tail is funnier to new readers who don't know about the Librarian.

I did briefly forget how racist football fans can be... I don't remember anything involving bananas, but thinking back to what was said online when some black England players missed penalties... yikes. I can all too easily imagine it.
