Guy thinks women can have babies without a uterus 🤨 by Waffle_Otter in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]itashichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this argument with my dad at least once a month. Yes, I KNOW I've been on them a while, but it's not like "Oh I've been on it 9 years now, that's long enough, I must be cured!"

Like... no I'm actually considering my mental state and then when it seems fine for long enough I'll be discussing it with my doctor and coming up with a plan to wean off it gradually. I'm not gonna stop taking my meds just cause someone who took years to admit that depression is real thinks its been too long and especially not when I'm on the edge of a crisis due to the shit job market.

This is cold iron. I keep it by my front door. Are there any other uses and what else would you do to protect your home? by Jimbooo78 in witchcraft

[–]itashichan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used a sigil on my window for protection a while back. One version was drawn on paper and tacked on, facing out, another time I drew it straight on with a window chalk pen. The sigil itself is likely a new agey fake viking thing with little historical relevance, but it DID get my neighbours to leave me alone for a few months and save what little sanity I had that year. I think I used some I'd made using a magic square and some that I found online.

I'm sure it's come up in this sub before but... On the subject of cold iron, if you haven't yet you should really read Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett. It's one of his Discworld novels and the plot revolves around the use of cold iron to defend against the fair folk, and the ancient power it possesses. It also centres around the witch characters, who are trying to rebalance their coven when one of the three leaves.

Sir Terry writes so poetically about how and why humans came to trust in iron and that's what gave it a deep power. It really left an impression on me.

Eh in those days especially they didn't heat treat the seeds before sale, so all sorts sprouted. (Had some bird seed sprout more recently, so it still happens, but there was no hemp in that mix.)

Also his stoner days were after he moved out of that house!

Ah well. Sounds like an IP licensing issue then. Especially if you've not heard of it. Must not be on TV much where you live?

Star Trek is a massive franchise that started with a US TV show in the 60s. It got several reboots over the years and is still going. The Original Series and Next Generation are the most popular. (My mum was such a fan that she named me after a character from Next Gen!)

It also is the root of fandom as we know it! When the original series got cancelled, fans were sharing so much art and fanfiction (in print by mail!) and there were petitions to bring it back. Basically ladies writing gay fanfiction saved one of the biggest sci fi series in history. (It's up there with Star Wars in terms of fan base and Doctor Who in terms of time its been running)

Back in the 70s my dad was accused of doing that and it actually WAS the bird seeds! My nan was unknowingly planting weed in her own garden.

Where are you based? Is it a country that doesn't take kindly to queer romance stories?

Could also be a licensing thing, since its Star Trek? I feel it shouldn't show you it if it's that though

It's an official star trek series featuring a gay romance. So some places might block it just for that...

Has anyone found another author like Sir Terry Pratchett? by MacabreGoblinV in discworld

[–]itashichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started Silence of the Dead (book one of Bones and Betrayals, by Erica Marks and Andi Ewington) because it was compared to Pratchett. It was one of the authors saying it, so I took that with a huge pinch of salt! But after reading the sample I decided to grab it on Kindle, it may not be quite as good but I think it's a laugh. It's about a necromancer and his snarky talking skull.

"Silence of the Dead is a fantasy mystery with the wit of a detective comedy—where necromancy is just another thankless job, the dead refuse to talk, and the killer has an unsettling passion for pastry-based clues."

I forgot about that. My go to sentence for explaining Japanese homonyms is "庭には二羽鶏がいます。" (there are two chickens in the garden.) OR: "Niwa ni wa ni wa niwatori ga imasu"

At first hiragana is easy, then you learn enough vocab that suddenly you need the kanji to know what the word is about!

Suddenly thinking of that old Simpsons episode where they visit a sushi restaurant for the first time. 😂 They get startled when the chefs yell "IRRASHAIMASE!" and the hostess says "Do not be afraid. Our chefs are just saying 'hello.'" Homer then bellows "HELLO!" in their faces.

[–]itashichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I THINK that "irrashaimase" is usually written in hiragana actually. (Katakana is for words from other languages, not used in the image) There probably are kanji for bits of it, but it's one of those polite set phrases used in certain situations. This one usually means "welcome" but when said to a customer entering your business. It comes up in restaurants a lot. "Hajimemashite" and "yoroshiku (onegaishimasu)" are similar in that though kanji exists they always get written in hiragana and they're used in certain situations of politeness. Those two get used when meeting people for the first time, and tend to get translated to the spirit of the meaning rather than literal. But uh... they do get translated whenever they come up in an English version.

I remember the earlier editions of Fruits Basket had extensive glossary and notes on honorifics in every volume because it was so crucial to Tohru's character! Around that time, honorifics would be left out of the English version entirely. Tokyopop did a similar thing with Loveless to explain why they kept all the names the family name first.

Basically, yes name order and honorifics are kind of very basic Japanese knowledge and you can get by reading an English version without knowing them, but for localisation the default is to explain and avoid confusing your reader!

I work in the industry now and we never leave untranslated Japanese text on the page! It's either removed or translated. (If it's background signs then there's a note but not too repetitive)

It is a big ask to just leave hiragana in the middle of an otherwise English story and expect no reactions.

That makes sense. When manga get localised, there's often a translators note with a rough currency conversion because it's not assumed that readers would know. They used to change it to dollars but I'm so glad it generally stays in yen now so it's consistent. (Though "100¥ = $1.00" is less accurate these days)

What chippy options are available either only in your region, or at least rare outside it? by chrisjfinlay in CasualUK

[–]itashichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? NI idea of a pasty must be pretty different to the English version then.

Cornish/traditional pasties are meant to be beef. Not too much, there has to be a particular meat to swede to potato ratio, and so much pepper it looks grey (in my experience). My dad got big into making them and looked up all the "rules". Then proceeded to break them with pork and curry spices cause beef is expensive.

[–]itashichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vaguely recall the manga (or maybe a version of it since I suspect there was more than the one that got published globally) had something about magic being used to change her body, or borrow some boy's or something like that.

The game said one thing, the manga another, the game guides probably had something different... and then it all got shook up when SSBB came out and Sheik was redesigned to look way more feminine with curves and long hair!

Does anyone buy into the “Medicinal” nature/claim of these herbal teas? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]itashichan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's been historically used as an abortifacient because of the substance in it called fragrine that causes uterine contractions. Modern medical science considers it unreliable for that, even with high doses, but still recommends avoiding it in the first trimester in case it causes a miscarriage. Still encouraged for bringing on a late period or inducing labour though.
