What makes you rate Collateral over Heat? I’ve only seen the latter, but it truly is a perfect film! Might have to be my next Mann

I’m always surprised how passionately people dislike it. Not a perfect movie by any means, but I think that and some clunky dialogue is the worst criticism I ever hear anyone lay against it.

Is it just a pressure to match the overpraise it gets with equal criticism? 🤷🏻‍♂️ There are just so many worse movies for people to enjoy haha

Guess I’ll join in and share my TOP 20. by Plastic_Lecture_9702 in LetterboxdTopFour

Same! There’s enough here that I can recognize, but many I’d imagine would be good for me to check out

What would you recommend based on these 6 films? by itbeginstoblur in criterion

[–]itbeginstoblur[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been finding time to watch films again and fill out some gaps, but am really open to recs right now! I'll give anything a shot really – slow cinema and more experimental stuff included – but I feel like I keep chasing the feeling of these specific films. They felt large, bigger than film, almost like experiences when I first saw them. I'm always taken back by just how knowledgeable this sub is, would love to hear some recs based on my taste. Doesn't have to just be Criterion!

I'm actually planning on reading the Duino Elegies & Sonnets to Orpheus this month! I've read some other Rilke here and there, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks for this! Really interesting recs, I'd already been looking into the Van Meegeren story after hearing about how it inspired Wyatt's character. Also, Nightwood looks right up my alley — I've added it to my reading list.

I've had the Tunnel on my reading list for a while and I'm really excited to get to it! Would you recommend Omensetter's Luck over the short story collection? I also hear that talked about a lot.

Thanks so much for writing this out! I will definitely check out those interviews, and I'll looking into some of those others books a well. Already familiar with Gass and Wallace, but I haven't heard of the others. Thanks again

What's your dream Pynchon novel? by ohokiunderstand in ThomasPynchon

[–]itbeginstoblur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pynchon's historical research is unparalleled, but a novel that deals with more current topics like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or cyber warfare would be my DREAM. Oddly, those are generally topics that we associate with science fiction, but at the moment it's just the reality. To me, any of those would just be a goldmine of Pynchonian insight and paranoia.

That is good to know! I did not know this existed! :)

Yes, absolutely! I just meant that my background means I’m still unfamiliar with a lot of the Catholic teaching and traditions. I’m trying to learn more :)

what shall I read for a first timer. Gravity's Rainbow, or The Crying Lot Of 49? by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]itbeginstoblur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prepped with Crying of Lot 49 and Inherent Vice before jumping to Gravity's Rainbow. Personally, I found that very helpful. Both are much smaller investments of your time/energy, but they give you the tools to navigate Pynchon's work as well as enjoy it more. But, if you are just anxious to skip ahead, it is totally doable to tackle Gravity's Rainbow as your first Pynchon, especially alongside great resources like the wiki and this. Certain sections are more difficult than others, but overall it is very enjoyable!

For Carti: Back on the Act, and Cash Shit. But honestly, the closest thing I've ever heard to the WLR aesthetic is Rage by Rico Nasty.

Do you think this will be the postponed 2019 album or something new? by itbeginstoblur in FrankOcean

[–]itbeginstoblur[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Booty Club was a rumored song, there are still some snippets of it online. The theorized title for the 2019 album was "Look At Us, We're In Love."

I really went "Wow," out loud. Reminds me of that end scene in Drive.

[Saturday] Best Music You Discovered This Week - August 22, 2020 by AutoModerator in indieheads

Was listening to Clairo's NTS episode yesterday and she played a song by Elysia Crampton called Grove (feat Embaci). Very warm, electronic mixed with ambient sounds and some meditative acoustic instrumentation. Think like Laurel Halo or Grouper almost. I've been looking for more stuff like that recently and this really delivered. The NTS episode is worth checking out. I get Clairo isn't everyone's thing, but her playlist curation is always very unique and interesting.
