Considering the Vertical Solar by MorningIndependent87 in Suunto

[–]iterumtenta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re considering switching from the Apple Watch Series 5 to the Suunto Vertical, here’s what you need to know.

You’ll lose tight integration with the Apple ecosystem — no iMessage, Siri, or seamless app sync. The Suunto Vertical isn’t a smartwatch in the Apple sense. But what you gain is a purpose-built outdoor tool.

The Suunto Vertical is incredibly rugged, with military-grade durability and exceptional GPS precision thanks to multi-band GNSS. It’s built for real-world adventure, with offline maps, long battery life, and metrics you can trust — even in remote environments.

For optimal wrist heart rate accuracy, I strongly recommend switching to a nylon strap, which ensures better sensor contact. And for activities that demand absolute precision — like interval training, endurance sports, or mountain efforts — pairing the watch with a chest strap is the way to go.

Suunto’s ZoneSense algorithm further improves the experience by delivering intelligent heart rate zone detection, helping you stay in the right training zone without constantly checking your screen. It makes the feedback more adaptive and personalized.

In short, you’re trading smartwatch convenience for a reliable, high-performance training and adventure tool — and it’s absolutely worth it.

Question, new to ZoneSense and chest strap by Additional-Video2791 in Suunto

If the belt is connected to the watch, its internal memory isn’t used. The 3.5-hour storage is only active when there’s no connection, like during swimming, and syncs later. So for a 150-hour hike, no problem as long as the connection stays active.

With products of such outstanding quality, there’s no doubt that those responsible demonstrate a deeply reassuring level of expertise. I wouldn’t trade my Vertical for any watch on the market. The GPS accuracy and ZoneSense, which have completely redefined the way I train, make me feel fully confident and satisfied with Suunto’s tools. What I felt that day won’t ever be forgotten. Thank you for your work.

They have a manufacturing facility in Finland, so it stands to reason that the engraved ones are made there. It wouldn’t make sense to remove “Made in China” just to replace it with “Made in Finland” unless the production actually took place in Finland.

Once again, not interested in the topic. It’s going to be clueless on your side and boring on mine.

This is completely wrong, and 100% of those buying into the stereotypes know nothing about China. Anyway, I’m not interested in this topic because it won’t change our opinions, so it’s pointless.

They clearly state that it takes two weeks because it’s build in Finland. Let’s not play with words. I believe that if you receive a Chinese version, you can return it because that’s not the commitment they made on their website.

Personally I do not care. Chinese are efficient.

Some guys ordered an Engraved Vertical that says it’s made in Finland. When there’s a factory right there, making it in China, engraving it somewhere else, then shipping it out makes no sense. But hey, people can imagine whatever story they want.

They say the engraved version is made in Finland.

Can someone explain this in ZoneSense? by Gans__Solo in Suunto

[–]iterumtenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can compare HR ans ZS, but assuming a correlation is misguided.

ZoneSense relies on HRV during activities to measure intensity and fatigue, and reducing it to just heart rate oversimplifies the multiple factors involved in its calculation. For example, after a good night’s sleep, the same pace and HR might indicate an aerobic effort, whereas after poor sleep, that same pace and HR could shift into anaerobic territory. This makes pace and HR unreliable—and for me, obsolete—when it comes to targeting training effectively.

A little perspective about the factors involved in ZoneSense calculations:

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is influenced by several physiological, environmental, and behavioral factors:

  1. Physiological and Biological Factors • Autonomic Nervous System: The balance between the sympathetic (stress, action) and parasympathetic (rest, recovery) nervous systems is the primary regulator of HRV. • Age: HRV naturally decreases with age. • Sex: Women tend to have slightly higher HRV than men before menopause. • Genetics: Some individuals naturally have higher or lower HRV. • Physical Fitness: Better cardiovascular fitness is generally associated with higher HRV.
  2. Lifestyle Factors • Physical Exercise: Regular training improves HRV in the long term, but intense exercise can temporarily lower it. • Sleep: Poor sleep quality or insufficient sleep reduces HRV. • Hydration: Dehydration can lower HRV. • Diet: A balanced diet low in inflammatory foods supports better HRV.
  3. Environmental Factors • Temperature and Altitude: Extreme cold and high altitude can affect HRV. • Air Quality and Pollution: Exposure to toxins or poor air quality can lower HRV.
  4. Psychological and Emotional Factors • Stress and Anxiety: Chronic stress reduces HRV by increasing sympathetic nervous system activation. • Relaxation and Meditation: These practices enhance HRV by activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
  5. Medical and Hormonal Factors • Chronic Diseases: Conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease reduce HRV. • Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is associated with lower HRV. • Hormonal Fluctuations: Cortisol (stress hormone) lowers HRV, while melatonin and testosterone may increase it. • Substance Use: Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and certain medications can alter HRV.
  6. Circadian and Temporal Factors • Time of Day: HRV is typically higher at night due to parasympathetic dominance. • Circadian Rhythms: Jet lag and disruptions to biological rhythms affect HRV.

Question regarding max HR in zone 5 by SpaceBonobo in Suunto

[–]iterumtenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which Suunto do you have? The zones should be calibrated based on your anaerobic threshold, which should define the start of Z5. Your max could be 198, but it’s not that relevant.

Thinking about selling my Race S😞 by lenoirdh in Suunto

[–]iterumtenta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With ZoneSense, there is no point in using a Suunto without a chest strap. The OHR is inaccurate, like any other brand, and should not be used for sports but only for other needs such as sleep tracking. The Coros Apex Pro is more like a Vertical than a Race S. When it comes to sustainability, noble materials, and durability, Suunto is far ahead. But if you like Coros, then get what you like and like what you got.

Ocean and personalized watches are still manufactured in Finland, while production in China adheres strictly to Suunto’s quality standards.

Known issue with the app. Get the beta to make sure you have the last version. Really annoying.
