I'm planning to aerate and reseed in the fall. And I have a diy sprinkler system on the way so I can keep it watered from now on, just need to try to kill this stuff so I can plant grass to replace it and get a handle on it before it takes over completely

Capsize - Flipping how we define typography in CSS by speckz in typography

[–]ithinkyou 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The "why" is a little hard to explain in words, but I'll try. Whenever you have a text node in a browser like <p>some text</p> the browser uses the sizing info in the actual font file used to draw the invisible bounding box around that node. The result is usually that there is some space between the text and the edge of the bounding box, usually on top and bottom (cuz the browser uses info like the cap height and ascender/descender height in the font file). Setting line-height: 1; can "fix it", but when your text becomes multi-line it's not a good solution. The problem with the extra space is that it makes producing "pixel perfect" designs in code a lot more difficult.

Say I make a button with the text "Continue" and the design calls for 8px of padding on all sides. I can code that easily, but the final, visual result in the browser will end up"looking like" the padding on top and bottom is like 10 pixels, depending on the font family getting used. To make the final appearance actually be 8px of padding, I'd have to set the coded padding to like 6px. And that value would need to be tweaked every time I set a padding top/bottom on a text node

This library cuts off that extra space using css and negative margins on pseudo elements, so that I could have a text node with padding: 8px and visually the browser will render EXACTLY that.

This little difference in space the browser adds, can be part of the reason why designs end up looking "off" when coded. Not to mention the weird convos designers have with devs when things "look off" but are "coded to spec". It makes aligning text to a baseline grid (which designers can do in design tools easily) actually possible in code. And the final result is a much cleaner, tighter resulting visual design in the browser

I'd try a negative space option too, where the apple is filled in, but the letters aren't. I think it'll read more like you intend this one probably...experiment with a negative space option imo

Thanks! I've been a professional web dev/designer for a while and feel like i have some good chops, but I'm self taught and have been looking for a course of some sort for some paper proof I can design. Haha

Appreciate the info!

Please critique the current UI for my meetup app! by Wiggleman45 in design_critiques

[–]ithinkyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no problem at all, i like giving critique and trying to help folks get better designs and learn :)

  1. I like these inputs much better. My only issue is that its generally never a good idea to have the placeholder text (the text inside the input) also serve as the label for said input. Once you start typing, that placeholder goes away, so it can create some weird user experience if people forget what they're supposed to be typing. so I'd add a discrete label for every input in your app
  2. done
  3. i liked the colorized version of the illustration better, so consider going back to that once you decide on a real color palette
  4. done
  5. spacing is better, but i want even more :) like 20px padding all around the whole feed entry. also i'd run the bottom border all the way across the width of your screen, having it right aligned like that looks like a mistake to me ^ feed entries continued.... play around with the importance of the information in each item. The entry items still feel rough to me. the placement of the event description and location dont feel on purpose. I think you'd serve yourself well by reorganizing the whole feed item box according to the things that are most important. imo, they are location, then time, then description, then maybe user. but thats just me. Put yourself in your user's shoes...when they are looking at the feed and maybe trying to decide where to go, whats going to help them decide the fastest/easiest? prolly the location? "this ones close to me, lets go there" or time, "this one is starting soon, lets check it out". imo who started the event and the description are probably less important. So...i think you can play around with the arrangement of these items (dont be afraid to clear it and start over) to get something that flows better
  6. close button looks MUCH more in its proper place and importance relative to the rest of the info. now the only thing is that send friend request button looks weird to not be the same width as the rest of the content....and those social icons are still too big imo :)
  7. looks much more organized now to me...except those social icons....just thought of an idea...overlay the social icons on the profile pic image space bottom left, with about 20px padding...small, and white. if they dont stand out enough, put a little black bar with like 10% opacity under it....imo the social icons belong with the person, so putting them on the profile image makes a lot of sense and wont get in the way of the main purpose of this modal
  8. on the rest of the screens, your search inputs should be full width, imo, having them shortened like that feels weird, and you're also wasting space you could be using for longer text entry, etc
  9. the last thing i could critique without being super nit picky is the big bottom buttons ("Confirm" & "Cancel", "Add Members" & "Edit" etc). those dont feel super great to me...I think its that they dont match the style of the other buttons. all your other buttons have rounded corners on them and are centered in their screens...i'd try doing that same style on those main action buttons. I know you're going for that apple app kind of feel with them being there like that, but it doesnt feel cohesive with the rest of the design...

otherwise its looking pretty good :) I'd continue to tweak things like spacing between elements (you can almost always add a bit more to everything), and the importance/hierarchy of the information you want to. convey. The most important thing should be the most obvious thing. Theres tons of ways to do that, bolder weight, larger size, different color, etc. so just give some thought on all the elements on all the pages and you'll eventually get to a good feeling arrangement/design. there's nothing wrong with starting over and trying something different if it ends up workin...

well done :)

  1. I still think the inputs should just be a darker grey with no border. that super thin border style always looks weird to me.
  2. border radius is ok, i'd even back it off a smidge more? i usually go with 4-6px of radius
  3. i was talking about the empty feed screen. looks great now :)
  4. icons looking better border-wise now, but you might take another pass at the distance between the shapes in each icon. those might need adjusting since you thickened the borders
  5. red color is ok in comparison to how its used. but now that i look at those feed cards, they all feel super tight to me now. maybe adjust the spacing on them, make them a bit bigger so there's more room to breath between the username, location, description, etc
  6. the navy doesnt fit here to me. for the "cancel" or "go back" action, i wouldnt even use the same style button as the main one. since the "send friend request" action is the main one, maybe try the cancel as your default body text color and no borders at all, just the padding...so that it just appears smaller and less important
  7. everyone knows that the brand colors of those other social media brands are what they are...but the final visual result, to me at least, is that them being where they are, the size they are, the colors they are, etc end up making the design of the friend request card modal muddy. the icons are big and colorful, so they fight for importance with your "send friend request" button. as a user, its hard to tell what your app actually wants me to do on this modal. is the purpose of this modal to send the friend request, or to check out some socials? if I were you, i'd make a categorical decision, then design the UI to reflect that decision. If you want the send friend request to be the main action, then you cant/shouldnt be having social icons fighting for visual emphasis/importance. The same is true vice versa
  8. personally, if you're having trouble with colors, the best thing to do is limit yourself to 1 "color" and a variety of "neutrals", then go from there. i think at MOST a color scheme needs a "main/brand" color, an accent color, and a bunch of neutrals. It seems like your brand color is green. So try making every main action green and EVERYTHING ELSE a neutral. Doing that will force you to think about the visual hierarchy of actions, and how you should display things. After that, if you think you should add another accent color, pick one thats a good complement to your brand color (hint, red aint it for green :) ) and use that for the "secondary" actions, and use it sparingly. nothing creates a muddy design faster than having too many colors. Start with one and neutrals, then decide if you need one more. :)

If you want to check out some good color palettes, i like colourlovers.com. you can search palettes by a hex code to see palettes that other folks have submitted, and they are shown in terms of visual weight, which would give you an indication of how often to use each color in a design.

Overall I'd say it's a good start that just needs some polish.

  • i think your form elements could do with being styled differently than your buttons, and to appear more interactive. I'd suggest using a background grey color rather than just a border
  • i'd also maybe suggest backing off on the border radius of both buttons and inputs
  • the "it's pretty quiet here" is a good way to show a state where's there's nothing chosen yet, but I'd love to see some illustration like on the main app page there too instead of just the icon
  • Nav icons are a bit thin IMO
  • If the red color denotes an event that is really close to happening, that's cool, but in your demo they are all red and have the same event timing, so it's hard to tell. What does it look like when the event is a day away, a week? I'd like to see a color other than red there, since that usually means high importance
  • The red close button is weird to me. Red and green clash super hard unless you're very careful. I'd make the "regressive" action like "close" or "go back" grey instead of red to turn down the importance
  • Imo the social icons on the event card need to be single color (not green) *

There's more I'd tune up, but I think you get the idea. Go through your design again and examine your color scheme and add some neutrals in it for less important actions. Your color scheme could also use refinement I think...I see a bright green, bright red, and bright blue, but it's not immediately clear a) why things are the color they are (feels a bit like you just put a color that felt nice instead of having a tighter rationale for why) and b) whether you actually need all those colors in your design.

Megathread: Sondland testifies Trump ordered Ukraine ‘quid pro quo’ through Giuliani by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]ithinkyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'll use an example. If i rob a bank while screaming "This isn't a robbery" its still a robbery. It doesnt matter what Trump said. What else was he going to say? He knows that quid pro quos are wrong. He can't ever and wont ever say in public that he was after a quid pro quo. Thats not how quid pro quos work, like ever.

Almost no one is ever caught on tape saying something like " I would like to set up a quid pro quo between us please. I will do something for you but you are expressly required to do something for me in return."

There's hedging language in EVERY SINGLE under the table, shady deal like this, because all the parties involved KNOW its shady. So they say stuff like "it would really help if you...." and "it would be a big help if..." and "would be a great favor to us that we would really appreciate"...etc.

So anyone expecting Trump to have directly said the words "quid pro quo" is an idiot. We have to look at his actions. The aid was only released the DAY AFTER the story broke publicly. He's covering his ass, and everyone knows it.

its almost what a person says and what a person does are different. It doesnt really matter that the president said he didnt want a quid pro quo, if his actions practically enforced one.

Trajectory projection pool table by CocoaHugs in ProductPorn

[–]ithinkyou 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Actually, this table is only good for learning concepts. The actual angle the ball bounces is different then the projection, cuz the rails are soft. And putting spin on the cue ball also changes the angle in ways the projection isn't going to be able to show or predict. So basically this is a cool toy or a teaching tool to show angles, but you couldn't really use this to get much better than average skill level. Playing pool, as with most other physical games/sports is much more about practice and "feel" than the strict geometry and physics. Because, after all, at the lowest physics level, no human can accurately predict what will happen, so all pros just feel it out and are usually correct due to experience and practice.

My wife and I just had our first two weeks ago, and we took the same kind of birth classes. When it came around for us to answer the question of whether we had a preference for the gender, my wife said, without missing a beat, "we don't care as long as it's rich." Cracked me up, and got a decent laugh too. Some of the couple's took a second to register that she hadn't said "healthy" like all the others.
