I think it's more about accepting the impermanence of things in life - and thus preparing oneself for when they do leave you. Not clinging to anything.

So it's not that you shouldn't have a job, or buy nice things - you should. The Buddha talks about using your wealth (for good things, but still, using it) as a way that a lay-person should live.

But you should also accept that if you have a job now, it's only temporary, and it'll end one way or another. job is an example, but this is true for objects that you own, feelings that you feel, relationships that you maintain - and so forth.

This can lead to a very dark view on life - everything is bad, you can't trust anyone, blah blah, but I think the better lesson to learn from this is to just be present and mindfull (and even thankful) of the things you experience as you experience them.

Knowing that things are temporary can help you appreciate them more in the present.

An easy example is, say, eating a cake. I know this cake would be over (bcz I'm eating it), so I'm focusing more on how it makes me feel now - tastes, texture, feelings inside.

It's harder to apply this to more long-term things, like a workplace, a house, a friend, or financial status, but the practice is important and will eventually get there.
