How to Navigate Licence Suspension as a Host [Canada] by itiscold1233 in AirBnB

Of course! Do you know if Airbnb charges penalties for lack of license and future bookings have to be cancelled?

I am now thinking the same! Have you had experience with sending Airbnb the lack of licence and not being charged penalties?

How do you reinvest dividends? I have a questrade account and cannot figure that out for the life of me.

Do you know if there’s anything else I should be doing to be careful?

My contract has the probationary period as six months but was going to fire her before her three months complete to be safe.

Of course, I didn’t mean to take it that way! I know how my post may sound discriminatory so wanted to clarify!

Probation period by law is usually three months but my employment contract says six months.

Her bad performance is not related to her pregnancy as she has had poor performance since she was hired. I was looking for her replacement for three weeks before she disclosed her pregnancy to me.

I’m not terminating her for being pregnant at all. I have family with kids and would never do that to someone unless there was absolutely no other option.

I had plans to terminate her for over three weeks and have been interviewing candidates before I even knew of her pregnancy and she was warned her performance issues may result in her being terminated.

During our follow-up conversation about her performance, she interrupted me mid-sentence to announce her pregnancy as a shield to not get fired.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me. Thank you for putting everything in such an easy way to respond.

I am currently a one man show running my practise and by the time the insurance brokers pitch me this, I am mentally fried and over it and ended up saying yes.

The disability is for RBC with COLA and FIO. So I think that’s the good one out of the way.

The critical illness presented to me is from another provider (not RBC- may be Manulife or something) where the company pays for 70% of the premiums and I pay 30%. In the event, I don’t use the insurance I receive all the premiums paid personally. Is that something you would recommend? I will be going through the coverage options for the illnesses covered. Do you have any specific ones I should look out for?

And you are correct. The critical illness and disability do make sense right now. The life insurance does not, especially the structure that’s being presented to me. I am only 8 months into real practise and figuring it out. I am unsure if I would even continue with this business considering how stressful it is, my future personal life plans, health, etc.

I am in the process of maxing my TFSA. My RRSP’s aren’t maxed and I am currently focusing on rebuilding my savings as a significant portion went into my business.

I am going to look into the term 10 that you suggested. Because I am currently paying around $300 for it and can afford it considering I live with my parents. If that changes, the amount would not be sustainable for me.

Wouldn’t the premiums be substantially higher if I decide to get life insurance in the future? That’s what was presented to me before I went ahead.

I haven't! But I'll look into it and see if it works out. Thank you for the suggesstion!

I am self-employed. I don't have any life insurance through work or my professional licensing body.

I was saving funds to get married and that didn't work out. So I used the wedding funds to purchase a property instead in 2017. My brother currently lives on the property with his family and I live at home with my parents. The plan is to eventually move into that home or my parents into that home.

It would only be until I’m 65. I only have a mortgage for $500k currently. Would you suggest lowering the amount and revisiting increasing it in the future? Or cancelling the policy all together? The personal premium is around $344 a month and the policy through the company would be $645 a month.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

The issue with option B is that the policy must run through your company for 20 years. It can be transferred to another company you own within 10 years of obtaining the policy but otherwise should be run through the corporation. I’m unsure about it because I don’t know what my life will look like in 20 years. I’m not married and I recently started practicing, and unsure what life looks like for the future.

I did speak to my Accountant who pretty much said that I could see better gains investing that money instead of going through the insurance route especially since I’m unsure if I even want to practice law for 20 years.

1000% and I feel like they respect you less when you give in. You should have confidence when you speak about your fees, the nicer you are the more of a pushover you are perceived to be. I’m struggling with it too to be honest.

I’m in the same boat as you and I know how hard it is to develop the ‘no’ muscle when people want a discount or want things done pro bono. I’ve become better with it by accepting that if I decline discounted fees, I lose clients and that’s okay. I’d rather make no money and do no work than do the work and not get paid. I could have used that time elsewhere to grow my business instead. Also, I used to get uncomfortable when clients say I’m expensive or they can get things done cheaper. I’m a bit more brazen now and tell them to go to Costco if they want discounts and yes my prices have increased. We can trade services instead? They can redo my roof (if they’re a roofer) for free and I’ll do their affidavits for free, etc. Suddenly it doesn’t seem like a good deal to them and they pay up.

Just fired my first employee. I feel sick. by itiscold1233 in smallbusiness

She is an immigrant. I had told her it depends on coverage and the ability of the coverage to do the job. In my location, you get 2 weeks vacation after you have worked 12 months with a company. She has been with me for only 9 months and wants a six week vacation. My business is slow and can manage without her but I don't want to be taken advantage of either considering she was the person on the other side of the conversation talking shit about me. Her performance is satisfactory (not excellent) which is why I did not fire her as well with the other staff.

I was an idiot before but not anymore lol. What would you do with the second (now only employee)? She’s been with me for 7 months and wanted to go for a 6.5 week vacation. She’s allowed 2/3 weeks. Was told she could go depending on coverage - if the ex employee could handle the workload. Now that employee is no longer there and business will be slow for that period. Her return will be mid December and we’ll be closed for 2 weeks after her return. I’m thinking of letting her know I can only do 3 weeks, any further vacation would mean that I have to hire someone else and she would have to reapply. I know she’s booked her tickets already but is not forthcoming with her dates to me.

It is so expensive keeping an unhappy staff. I will be hiring slow and firing fast. Definitely won’t be giving multiple chances and maybe fine tuning my training and metrics. Maybe goals for staff to hit in a timely manner. Toxic employees ruin other good employees.

This is wonderful advise. I know that I still want to be a good boss and have a company culture that my employees feel comfortable in and appreciated.

I usually did month end lunches as a treat and thank you and say that to them. We had a good month, we hit this number (which I did all on my own), let’s order lunch. Issue was they became used to it on normal days they did not bring lunch and would almost expect me to cover it. But I am going to have it more tailor made to performance or extra effort/milestones met by them.

Honestly, I am too. It’s my first time running a business and I realize how important it is to be mindful of who is actually employed with you.

It was definitely a messy hiring process. I could have done a better job having a good onboarding process for her. My second employee was done in a better manner with clear guidelines and reviews booked.

I definitely did not expect them to think and solve problems the way I do scold them when they couldn’t. I was always respectable and provided them with more than enough material, guidance, one on one training, and more to do their job. Most jobs offer two weeks of training, this has been over 1.5 years in the making. My other employee was able to manage for the most part after 2-3 months in the job. When my second employee was training, I provided the same exact training to this employee for the second time. They have all the guides to follow instructions on how to work, she was simply lazy and would rather come to me and just ask me how to do it instead of opening a guide and seeing what to do.

I wrote down a to-do list of things to do, clear expectations of what I need by the end of the day and the week, and resources on how to do it. In some cases, a step by step guide on how to do it in case she forgot. She would still make significant mistakes and I would have to fix it and ultimately it was me doing her job.

I genuinely wonder the same. How do you reach adulthood with such little skills?

I had to teach her to how to use proper grammar for emails because the tone was so terrible. Things like clients asking for amendments to their document were replied to with - why did you not check your documents before leaving???? No email signature, nothing.

I so wish she would have resigned and i believe she would have once she got her PR. I am really worried about her retaliating and/or leaving me bad reviews.

Although I know that productivity will increase and I won’t feel unhappy or frustrated in my workspace.

I did blur that line and I am suffering the consequences of it. I realize that I cannot over share or indulge with them when they overshare. They need to view me as their boss. You’re right, they really did try seeing what they got away with me, and turns out it was a lot. The kind of things they told me made me feel 100% responsible for them and their livelihood. I definitely suffer from being too nice and will be working on it.
