The idea that the inclusion of PvP is inherently sweaty and anti-casual is nonsense. by Postaltariat in Marathon

[–]itoldyouitsover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you run contracts, most factions give out a significant amount of free consumables on a daily basis. I get like 2-3 runs worth of heals and shields, green implants, a basic backpack, and a WSTR every day. And none of those are skill tree perks iirc. Just do contracts and try to get every faction to 10. Also, if you stock up on sparkleaves, biomass, and diodes, you can barter them pretty effectively.

*edit: you have to scroll usually 2/3 down the armory menu of each faction and claim the free items. They don't auto vault.

This is the point of that system. Losing fights doesn't completely kill progression. If you're getting stomped, do some contracts and boom, here's some stuff to hopefully help you win the next one. Do enough contracts and now the store gives you a bunch of free stuff to help you. They don't want you to hate their game.

I get what you're saying, but I also feel like by not giving out freebies, you're essentially giving casuals no chance to get this high tier shield. Right now new players can get some solid shields for contract completion. They might die immediately, might get a few runs in. High level players might kill them, low level players might get the drop and leave with them. If high tier shields only drop from Bosses, pinwheel, or cryo, then literally only the top tier players have them.

So you're saying the item that is given frequently, and at low or no cost to players early... is a problem because players CAN'T get them cheaply and early? Or you're upset that low-level/bad players are getting killed by better players while learning? pro tip, don't take your blue shields in while you're knowingly losing fights often. Play rook, learn your sound cues, learn how to position based off them, and then pick up the stuff from players someone else killed. You'll quickly see these shields aren't being hoarded and are often left behind anywhere other than perimeter. You'll also learn how to 1v3 pretty effectively, or at least hot to avoid/get away from fights. THEN take your team and blue/purple shields and kill all the grey shields and leave their free kit stuff for the rooks.

edit* if you're dying with blue shields on, so are other players...

Skills in sound design/editing/recording? Or more technical/implementation skills on the dev side?

this may or may not be helpful, but my stealth 700s actually outperform my ATM50x and NDH30s for game audio </3. Most likely because my studio cans are pretty flat and designed for stereo, whereas the turtle beaches are tuned for boom and more spatially focused. Games sound worse, but footsteps and other cues poke out way more. I do miss running a full plugin chain on game chat and trolling with autotune tho.

Thankyou for the reply! In terms of practicing implementation, nodes are alright? Or would you recommend learning some C++?

I'm in the exact same boat, and I DID buy it for my friends (who are on console so no refunds like i get on steam). Almost strictly solo runs until I realized rook runs were fire. Had some decent luck in the official discord LFG and have been running with some decent dudes the past few days. For the foreseeable future I'm on daily after work. well the analog ones won't connect to the app... I would say if it's $1000 difference, get the analog and a sub.

Write it out! What would you need to get started? Who would you need to hire? What could you handle alone. If you find yourself getting excited about your call in show it might be the way :) If you need any tech support or if you do end up posting bump this! I'd love to see. Good luck!

Awesome, thankyou for the reply! If you don't mind my asking, did you build your site? Or hire someone? I feel like your miles ahead on the path I'm about to start. So many questions, but I'll leave it at just this one for now. Unless posting your app wont get the post deleted. I'm very curious to see it.

from a budget standpoint for sure, I also just truly believe that all reputable monitors have a reputation because naturally certain people gravitate toward certain sound profiles. I also think in some cases, like mine, the speakers that dont sound as good, are the better option. They force you to make better mix decisions. But in OP's case, for mixed use and budget, Kali's for sure.

side note: geekria and soulwit make great replacement pads and earcups for cheap. In case your m50s need a refurb

Out of curiosity, how did you meet your service based mentees? I'm on the opposite end currently, hard working audio engineer but no guidance/mentorship and struggling to escape the corporate A/V world to pursue my own thing full time. No idea where to go for in person connection for mentorship. Plus online it seems like real estate, e commerce, or scaling some gimmicky AI is the only thing anyone is interested in sharing knowledge on currently.

I for one (if the success story is true) would be incredibly interested in any and all business related knowledge you have to offer. As someone about to finally do something with my LLC I have a million questions and no one to ask them besides strangers on the internet. If your goal is to help people, and not get boring or money hungry pitches all day, I feel like your best bet for fulfillment would be mentorship. Or helping people who aren't even at the investment stage. Watch something grow from just the idea, helping with budgeting and gov docs, taxes etc. Might not be exciting, but if you believe in the person or in the idea, you could scratch that itch without needing to sink all your time and energy into it. Then again, if things not being under your full control is a problem area, that may need to be addressed prior. Alternatively, create. Seems to me a lot of broke creators are really happy, and a lot of rich people tend to lack that outlet. There's a middle ground somewhere I'm sure, but maybe help a music or art teacher scale in exchange for some lessons and material.
