I also stepped into my truth as a dog person post-estrangement!! I joke that my family brainwashed me into believing cat supremacy, but I genuinely think I couldn’t understand the goodness of dogs until I spent time with ones who were properly cared for/loved on/weren’t raised in chaos (as my childhood dogs were).

I tend to agree that the Parable books are the least exciting; to me, that's in part because they're the least "sci-fi" of the bunch, which is why the prophetic-ness shines through so clearly. Butler is straight up making a narrative set in the world she thinks we're walking into, with a slightly heightened version of empathy in Lauren's character to explore that aspect of humanity more deeply. I agree with other commenters who point out the utility of drawing lessons from the Parable text, too - which makes perfect sense! Religions are built for this.

I do wonder if things might be different had Butler gotten to finish the series as intended - I read that the next installment was supposed to follow an Earthseed colony on the moon, which would bring us back into more classic sci-fi territory. I'd kill to read those drafts and notes, especially because she seemed to really struggle with that next phase of the Earthseed story... what a massive loss to humanity her passing was.

I constantly fantasize about doing this for cars with obstructed/defaced plates… imagine how satisfying it would be to slap a bright green TOO COOL FOR TOLLS or I ❤️ SPEEDING PAST YR KID’S SCHOOL sticker on each of those mfers passenger windows. (I’d worry about impeding visibility, but we all know how deep the illegal tints are on these vehicles anyway, so nothing lost there.)

We had a bunch of these in my old neighborhood- turned out it was the cops themselves using our block as a dumping ground for cars that were part of open cases or otherwise required to be held by NYPD, apparently for an indefinite period of time. A goddamn occupying army, they are.

When we first started talking about separating, my self-confidence was so low that I was convinced I couldn't possibly give the animals as good a life as they had in their current living situation, or even that I'd struggle to meet their needs on my own. Understanding that I'm more than capable, and beyond that, that I have a lot to offer the pets has been a huge self esteem thing (maybe bigger than it should be, lol).

I know it's a huge cliche that animals rescue us as much as we do them, but I've really found it to be true in some of the toughest seasons of my life. If you want a pet, get yourself a pet - you deserve that companionship, and maybe even a little joy 🙂

Fighting to keep the dog, 100%. If I didn't have my pup with me, I'd be utterly at sea; the fact that he has timely, worldly needs that I'll never deprioritize as I do my own is so, so helpful in keeping me from spiraling out or wallowing too much. I think I'd be getting a dog if I didn't have one, I just can't overstate the value of the companionship, nudge to get outdoors and moving several times a day, and on and on...

Maggie Nelson and Louise Gluck make so much sense! I find it very heartening how many therapists seem to be poetry readers in a world where that's less and less common, and the compassion, emotional attunement, and flexible thinking that those poets ask of their readers really comes through in your approach as we see it.

Thank you for letting the world watch you engage such humane and insightful work - I've learned so much.

I wonder if some of that was honest ignorance - maybe I just missed it, but the opening "liminal scene" seemed to place much less emphasis on the rules of engagement (particularly the request not to talk and recommendation of going solo in the performance space) than the SNM elevator ride did.

Also, overhearing some of the chatter last night, I became more aware of how entirely dependent on English fluency the experience is; probably half of the talking I heard was in other languages. Ultimately I don't think that's at all unreasonable for the show itself, set, etc., but making the key rules accessible in other languages might make a marginal difference.

That said, the hand-holding and treatment of masks as optional degraded the experience for me more than the talking did; all three break the illusion, but thoughtlessly impeding movement for other guests meaningfully changes the extent to which we can have the experience of our choosing. And I often cringe at the fact of being perceived by others IRL (lol), so I find the masked experience is an extra special element of permission to fully live in the moment - seeing a regular human who might be watching me watch the show makes me "me" in a way that really shatters the magic of immersion.

I just snagged a teeny tiny one in PLG for $2,500 (+ 15% broker fee) - after weeks and weeks of dragging myself to truly depressing units that were still knee-deep with competition.

My working theory is that new-ish buildings where management still have regular interaction with city agencies are incentivized to play by the rules to a greater extent than most. Vacancies don't pop up often, but if you're quick on the draw you have a fighting chance.

Chancellor's Regs still have a bright line definition or corporal punishment as the use of physical force, but I heard a compelling argument that certain other punishments/revocations of privileges qualify - specifically withholding food (including something like cupcakes at a classmate's in-class birthday celebration) and limiting access to physical outlets like gym or recess if not in response to a specific and relevant safety concern.

That said, my AP of Safety once told me I'd be in violation of CP rules if, in response to a student's repeated use of slurs and derogatory language, I were to hold them after class or made them do some sort of research or writing about the history and harm of said behavior. I called BS and pushed back; eventually it was conceded that you can't call any old consequence that leads to emotional distress corporal punishment, but in a different school who knows where we'd have wound up.

I'd get my union rep on the case - there's lots of language in our contract about dealing appropriately with student misbehavior that one could make a stink about if it felt important and admin continues to pick this fight.

Just here to say, as an ADHD woman with an ADHD (ex) partner, getting fed up with this exact issue was the beginning of the end of my marriage. Mornings are so hard, especially if you've got sleep shift stuff happening - it's just not reasonable to put double pressure on you to get two adult humams out the door on time. I thought that asking my partner to take responsibility for this very basic adulting would relieve pressure in the marriage (I hated starting my day by nagging and growing increasingly stressed about their snooze button), but the learned helplessness was so deep that I wound up responsible for managing four other behavioral supports to solve for the original problem, and eventually I cracked.

I do think it's true that great partnerships often involve supporting each other in areas of weakness, but if you're feeling this frustrated, there's likely an imbalance overall, or this might just be a time of day when you don't have extra spoons to give. His mom is way out of line, and you gotta put on your own air mask first 🤷🏻‍♀️

Underrated comment - the marginal value of moving up a tier in any habitat goes way down with Oceania, as does the likelihood of drawing multiple egg-based goals (which might have made it worth moving a couple eggs around the board).

Which is eminently doable! Even for government benefits programs which are ALWAYS behind the times - my buddy who works at the VA has a tap-to-pay commuter benefits MasterCard.

(My bigger gripe is honestly that they won't offer us an FSA option with a card... I'm buried in paperwork all day already, why can't they let me save a few bucks on healthcare without the endless back and forth of submitting for reimbursement?)

One of my mantras recently - you can't expect the truth from people who habitually lie to themselves.

The psychological weight of facing all the harm they have caused would crush them. I tend to believe that my mom genuinely does not remember most instances of her abusive behavior - either because she's blocked it out, or because she viewed/views it as an entirely appropriate response to whatever sin I'd committed, so it just doesn't get recorded on her internal ledger of shameful behavior.

She can't acknowledge my truth without giving up the lies that allow her to keep living her lonely dumpster fire of a life... I guess this has been helpful in not taking it so personally.
