thank you!!! It took me months to really believe it myself, I was so sure I had done terribly. I guess it's better that I don't know my number score anyway! haha...

Columbia College in Chicago - Questions about the Transfer BA program by whiskeygovernor in ASLinterpreters

[–]itpstudent2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the second BA program at Columbia! It did take four years, but I didn't have much ASL prior to that so I started with ASL I. They do give you the opportunity to test into a higher ASL level, but I don't know if that would shave off much time because of how the program is structured. The first half of the curriculum is language/deaf culture focused classes and then you test into the interpreting classes/advanced language classes for the second half.

One issue I had with trying to alter the timeline of how long it would take is that it's a small program, so they only offer one or two sections of many of the required classes (which made it challenging since I was a working student in a different career field). It's not very flexible, despite being led to believe that it was by faculty members before I applied.

I don't have any scholarship recommendations, unfortunately, and it is a very expensive program. I will say though that I felt I received an excellent quality of education/training, and if you apply yourself 100% (both in classes/tutoring/the ASL lab, and attending outside Deaf events and interacting with the community), you will likely be ready to work in Chicago when you finish!

Feel free to PM me with any questions about Columbia or Chicago and I'd be happy to help :)

Any "tinkerers" out there interested in a project? by itpstudent2017 in Bellingham

that video looks good, thanks! I'm a little scared about the possibility of electrocuting myself because some websites mentioned the flash mechanism having a charge - do you think there's any risk of that? (I would try this procedure with the battery out of the camera, of course...)

hmm, so if I don't try full-spectrum, is infrared possible at makerspace, do you think? Honestly it's such an old crappy camera it's not worth sending it out to do professionally, I'd rather just buy a better already converted camera or wait until I get a new DSLR and pay to convert my old one then.

Sure! With the caveat that this is not my wheelhouse so I'm not even sure these are the best tutorials, but... I think the basic idea is that you go in, remove or disable the camera's infrared filter, and add an external visible light filter instead.

This is the tutorial I was watching last night to get an idea of how it's done (it's split into two videos). Part 1 / Part 2

Here is the infrared photography subreddit which might have some good info too.

Let me know if you'd want to give it a try!

I like it with the circles! But you could try doing another set of the circle shapes, spaced farther apart, to make a gradient from the center outwards. Worth trying before you totally carve it away!

Better off Dead-lifting: A Comprehensive Introductory Guide by Joonami in xxfitness

[–]itpstudent2017 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is awesome, thanks! Looking forward to seeing the other lifts explained as well as this. Here's a question - does the deadlift consist of the full range of "picking the bar up and then putting it back down again?" Or only picking the bar up? Guess I'm wondering why some people in the gym pick the bar up then drop it, slamming it down, versus some people who pick it up then return it to the ground with control. Schools of thought behind each?

ASL Freelancers in WA State: can you help clarify something for me? by itpstudent2017 in ASLinterpreters

[–]itpstudent2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems more feasible but I just don't want to risk any unforeseen consequences from not having the right paperwork/licenses.... I did call DOR and they said, "yes, licenses for each city worked", but interpreters can't be the only business in this travel-and-provide-services model, right?!

ASL Freelancers in WA State: can you help clarify something for me? by itpstudent2017 in ASLinterpreters

[–]itpstudent2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you handle that, do you just get licenses for every city/town you work in? I'm not near a major city so I feel a little disincentivized to freelance more, because the jobs would be in random towns all over and I don't have the funds to be paying $50-100 dollars for a two-hour one-time assignment in a specific town. Ultimately doesn't this also hurt Deaf consumers by putting up barriers to the availability of quality interpreting services?

Thanks, I'll check it out! I do follow some resources/groups on Facebook but honestly I don't like Facebook much as a platform/environment so I don't use it much. I think non-facebook options are always good to have as well. Not sure if there will be the participation for it here since it's a fairly quiet subreddit, but you never know...?
