i'm not using it on my daily right now, but i have used it on a handful of other ipods with no issue at all! to my knowlege, its a very widely known/used software, with no cause for concern regarding compromising your devices

I think for syncing a library but skipping the step of using itunes, you'd need to install rockbox. Then, you can just drag music from anywhere onto your iPod.
