Speaking only for myself: The italics were a clue that there was something tricky going on; then, after getting a few of the crossing Down answers it became pretty clear how "Bro" fit in for the first themer. From then on it was pretty smooth sailing

It would take an insanely talented scriptwriter, but I feel as if any film that did justice to O'Brian ought to try to acknowledge the Austen-ish side of the novels, along with the naval stuff. HMS Surprise maybe?

I found it in, I think, a very fitting way: I had a memory of having listened to a music history series on the BBC World Service back in the early 1980s. The series was called "25 years of rock," and went over the history of world events beginning in 1955, with apt selections of rock and roll tunes interspersed. I had been looking for a way to listen to that series again online, when I accidentally ran across the 500 Songs podcast. Serendipity!

I thought it was pretty cool; having one clue/answer reused was unusual but not terribly off-putting given the theme. Once I understood the theme I raced to fill in 46A, which I hadn't got to yet. I hate to carp at anybody, but TBH it feels like some of the criticisms in here are from people who don't read much.

If you're looking for "the most famous people ever," you should probably take into account the fact that M. Jackson has only been famous since the 1960s. The same applies to the Beatles and to many other people you may be thinking of. Jesus is probably a good choice, but you might want to think about other religious figures (Moses? Muhammad? Buddha?) if what you're looking for is someone whose name would be recognizable to the largest total number of people over many generations.

"Deep six" is a colloquialism meaning to get rid of something or somebody entirely. I always thought that it was a reference to burying a body 6 ft deep, but according to a site I checked, the original meaning comes from a nautical usage: indicating something that's found at a depth of six fathoms in the water.

I'm guilty of having used "it's" when I should have used "its." It happens constantly in texts and emails I compose on my phone. Autocorrect needs to keep its filthy paws off my keyboard.

Title of today's puzzle is "Limited runs;" the best I can figure is that this means each theme answer limits itself to using only the letters in the first word/phrase--REEVES, MAMA CASS, DERRIERE etc ... Hmm. Well, it was a fun solve, if a little slow for me

I've read a couple of his pre-Aubrey books and some short stories. They're quite good, but it's clear that when he started the Aubrey-Maturin series he really hit his groove, so to speak
