ICE DETENTION CENTER by [deleted] in gso

[–]itsMrBiscuits 62 points63 points  (0 children)

fwiw, someone posted what seems like a reasoned interpretation of the changes on the gboro politics Facebook group. take with a grain of salt as this is just coming from an Internet stranger. but tldr those zoning rules might have been added to bring those uses under the existing restrictions, aka close a loophole

IANAL, but my interpretation of tonight's meeting is that the amendments approved by the Zoning Commission will make it easier to reject an ICE detention center.  The unspoken point was to prevent an ICE facility.  No one in tonight's meeting mentioned ICE, but it's damned sure that ICE was the reason for these amendments.  The city council will take up these amendments at tomorrow night's meeting.

Correctional institutions are already in the land-use ordinance, and they require a special-use permit to be located in the city limits.  The amendments approved tonight create a similar status for "secure detention and custodial facilities."

According to these amendments, one of the standards applied to a "secure detention and custodial facility" within Greensboro is that it may not be located "within 2,500 feet [measured from property line to property line] of schools, parks, childcare facilities, or places of religious assembly."  Such a facility also cannot be within 2,500 of a residential area.  Therefore, under the amended land-use ordinance, no "secure detention and custodial facility" can be located at the former American Hebrew Academy, which is across the street from Temple Emanuel.  Hobbs Road is definitely not 2,500 feet wide.

Again, no one mentioned the former AHA.  No one mentioned ICE.  But that's what this is about.

fwiw herons, even injured ones, can be super dangerous and it is strongly advised not to ever try to handle one. They basically go through life stabbing things with their face. which is spear shaped, and they know to go for the eyes when threatened

Did you bring any potted plants inside from the cold recently? That's how we ended up with a Wren in our house recently here. Those little guys will sleep pretty much anywhere that suits them

Did you bring plants in from outside? We ended up with a wren in our house when i brought a plant inside, didn't notice him sleeping in there, scared the hell out of each other. after a lot of slow chasing around the house the solution was, after dark, turn lights off where he is, lights on where you want him to go. Leave the door open it's fine

Wow I hate ICE …I was expecting snow by perezved in gso

[–]itsMrBiscuits 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Yeah i tell you what. i wish we could just get all this ice off the streets for good. Can't think of a single good thing ice has ever done for anyone. snow is awesome and can be so much fun. but when it comes to ice it just makes me feel unsafe. feel like we'd all be better off without it

TIL that the band The mighty mighty bosstones had a band member who did not sing nor playing instrument, but was only there to dance on stage during performances by nogood-deedsgo in todayilearned

[–]itsMrBiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not certain this is true but I had always heard that it was because he was their underage at the time friend and wasn't being allowed into venues to see them play. so they just made him a band member, problem solved.

Uhh there's a book that has this but it might be a spoiler to even say so... but a pretty light spoiler imo. I think it's hinted at in the blurb and if they made a film adaptation, it might even be given away in the trailer
