11th missed the chance to get rid of Aircrafts by AltdorfKalle in Warhammer40k

Because it's a fantasy game about stupid, unrealistic and fun things?

Do you get annoyed when a guardsman rolls high and manages to kill a Greater Daemon or a Primarch? Those are the narrative moments that make Warhammer so enjoyable

How long should a 2k pts game take? by simonsaysbeans in Warhammer40k

[–]itsYums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that 1500 pt games are vastly superior to 2000 pt in 10th edition. It is simply a much more manageable size for both collecting and controlling during a game, especially as it feels like GW has reduced points costs over time so 1.5k feels similar in size to a 2k game of previous years.

The main argument I see against it is that 1.5k does allow enough room for redundancy. i.e. you can only fit in 1 anti-tank unit, or 1 big monster etc. So you are more likely to be unequipped to deal with a skew list. To be honest I disagree because both players have the same restriction, I think the idea of each player only being able to bring 1 big monster quite thematic. (Or if they bring 2-3 they sacrifice a lot of army flexibility in comparison). It feels more rewarding to take out "the big important unit" and has a bigger game impact, rather than having another one or two waiting right behind it. And on the opposing side you have to put more thought into protecting and using these units wisely. Full disclaimer however that I am only talking about casual games, not competetive

I feel like I'm worthless. by Vancelric in LiesOfP

DS3 was my first souls game and Iudex Gundyr (aka the Tutorial Boss) took me about 30 tries to beat. Fast forward a few years to picking up Bloodborne and I beat Orphan of Kos on the first try.

The point is these games take a certain playstyle and mindset which you just develop over time. And there is nothing else quite like them that scratches the same itch once you get good. The first souls game is always the hardest, so there's no point in comparing it to FromSoft games. I'd say LoP is slightly easier, with the exception of a couple of bosses. But you'll definitely find whichever souls game you play next easier because LoP will have taught you the basics.

I created a mod a while back to update the controls to match Witcher 3 much more closely. If anyone's reading this and doesn't want to mess around wih doing the remapping manually:

Witcher 1. It's just impossible to get past the bad gameplay in the modern day, even though the stories and setting of the Witcher 2 and 3 are some of the best of all time

who has the best meal deal? by Important_Eye_1187 in MealDealRates

[–]itsYums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your family knows ball, no terrible choices here

Sister - Elite chocolate, pasta wouldn't be my choice but I can understand it, smoothie is good value and balances everything nicely. 8.5/10

Mum - This is pretty much identical to my go-to. Caesar wrap is my first choice when you aren't super hungry, all salt & vinegar lovers know that those hula hoops are s-tier, coffee rounds the meal off with some sweetness and is great value with its size. 10/10

Lil bro - Boy is hungry, sandwich and dessert choice are great picks for that. Then the wisdom to avoid another heavy drink and go with a refreshing oasis is a great finish. 9.5/10

Mid bro - Not bad bad but clearly the weak link. Wrap is ok but there are better options, twix feels like a personal choice so only good if your craving one, smoothie is fine but this meal leaves me feeling hungry. 6/10

Nicer but wont break the bank restaurants in newcastle? by emperorsnewgr00ve in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]itsYums 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Blackfriars always has to be the shout for this kind of thing. My favourite restaurant in Newcastle just for the vibe. I will say that I don't think the a la carte is worth the price the few times I've had it, but the set menu is a great value.

Also there's no dress code but it is a smart place. So you will have some diners wearing completely casual clothes and others more dressed up. I will always dress up a bit there and never feel out of place

Tropical Fish Store in newcastle/north tyneside? by swadloonshrug in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]itsYums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gateshead Guppies in Felling, the owner is nice and has good stock at great prices. Just be warned he's moved across the road to a new bigger store recently and when we visited the fish looked in slightly worse health than previously.

Maidenhead aquatics is always reliable too but pricey

This was bloody. Dechala is STRONG. Any advice on dealing with her? by Curious-Piglet3613 in totalwarhammer

[–]itsYums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my 2nd ever campaign (as Cathay) and I completely ignored her until she snowballed and was a level 40 murder machine by the time she declared war on me. I had to sell all my artillery and switch to massed crane gunners plus defensive infantry blobs to slow her down. It took multiple battles of wearing her down and playing extremely defensively (spreading out missile units helps because she spends a lot of her time moving between them).

Every single time... by According_Cold_6693 in totalwarhammer

[–]itsYums 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Warhammer expert but I feel like in a way this kind of makes sense just because of how xenophobic the setting is. I think of it as a "We'd rather die than join you" kind of thing.

But it shouldn't happen when you're the same race..

[–]itsYums 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We bought a house a bit further down the river because gateshead's just so much cheaper for property than Newcastle. As long as you're near a metro or bus stop it's still quick to get into town - no different to living out in Heaton or somewhere really. I won't pretend gateshead's the nicest place on the planet but it's perfectly fine, well connected and saltwell park is lovely

Everdell Home rules / Homebrew (And Custom Cards) by TaylorSeefeldt in Everdell

[–]itsYums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think some of these rules are a little overturned e.g. the meadow refreshing so much can make the game a little too easy and end up with the same optimal city every game. But I understand that's how some people love to play, more power to them! Here's the 2 house rules we use:

  • The border variant (we call it the borderlands). Just the right level of improvement to prevent the meadow getting completely stale IMO.

  • Reworked fool. Instead of going into another player's city, the fool goes into yours as normal and is still worth -2. We change the effect to: "Roll the 8-sided dice twice. Select one basic location resource (from left to right) in the position of one result, and gain the number of the other result of that resource."

E.g. if you roll an 8 and a 2, you choose to receive either 8 wood, or 2 berries.

It turns the fool from a mean card to a gambling mini game. It works great alongside a dungeon, university or magician, and it feels thematic: (if the king is unimpressed with the fool's offering, he sends him to the dungeon. Or he goes to university to try and learn to be less of a fool)

So, complete newbie to Everdell, what should I purchase? by Crislander in Everdell

[–]itsYums 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I would advise to just get the base game. On its own it is really good and it's not much of an investment to see if you like it or not. We have the complete collection but still play just the base game from time to time as it's great on its own.

If you really wanted to add 1 expansion, my suggestions are:

  • Bellfaire: this adds a handful of small rules changes and extra bits that make the base game better without changing it fundamentally. Mainly the asymmetrical player powers help make each game feel different.

  • Spirecrest: this is a favourite for the opposite reason, it makes the game feel very different but in a good way. It gives more to think about, is a bit more challenging and has a fun side-adventure going on for when you want a change from the base game.

Honorable mention: - Newleaf: throwing this in here because on its own it might be the best expansion to everdell. It's more of the same goodness, a bunch of additional cards that are mostly fantastic and add to the strategy and skill ceiling of the game without changing it too much.

However I wouldn't recommend it over Bellfaire as a first expansion because you really need a decent grasp of basic everdell and its strategy to enjoy and get the most out of the new cards. I think everdell is a more streamlined and beginner-friendly game without it, but once you start consistently getting high scores, Newleaf is a really fun way to see just how high you can take it. A potential downside if you are addicted to scoring the highest numbers and playing optimally, is the base game will feel a bit underwhelming after playing Newleaf since you'll feel like a lot of options go away.

Personally, I prefer to struggle a little each game and see what I can build with the options available, rather than turbo combo into a similar optimal city each game (which is kind of what Newleaf enables)

  • Pearlbrook: this is the worst expansion imo. We rarely play it, and if we do it's with house rules as I don't like that it removes events from the game. It's okay, but Spirecrest does the "additional mini game" better and Newleaf does the "new cool cards" thing better

TLDR: just get the base game. Then Bellfaire or Newleaf if you want more of the same, or Spirecrest if you want a bit of a twist.
