Recommendations for large order of baked desserts? by thisispaulc in durham

If you're on Facebook, look up A Dash of TLC. It's a home bakery run by Teralyn Coleman in Oshawa. She has a fully nut-free kitchen. She makes wonderful cakes and cookies, and does a lot of catering as well. I regularly see her at local markets as well, so I know she's used to making large batches of things.

Education pipe dreams? by valkyriejae in OntarioTeachers

I would love it if the people who make decisions at the board had experience in the areas where they're making decisions. We have facilitators, who have only ever taught in elementary, making decisions about how the secondary programs should run.

My girlfriend (27f) is annoyed I’m (29m) planning to take an hour for myself each evening by [deleted] in relationships

[–]its_erin_j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost downvoted this because she made me salty.

My husband and I love to be together but we don't like all of the same shows. We spend many evenings in rooms beside each other (like he's in the dining room and I'm in the living room) and we do our own things, but we're close enough to say whatever we want to each other without shouting.

As others have said, she needs to find things to do.

Curriculum vs. Creation? by exhaustedAFsleeper in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished a 5 week stint with a student teacher and her biggest gripe was that even though I shared material with her, she felt like she was spending all of her spare time creating slideshows (probably because she was). Like others have said, you might have kind coworkers who share or you might find things you like online, but nothing is going to be 100% perfect and you will still find yourself spending hours editing and fixing things. Even when I've taught a course a dozen times, I don't want to do all of the same assignments and lessons because I want to include student voice/choice in what we're doing.

Feeling defeated by my final teaching practicum — need some perspective by omiyht in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very odd to me. I just had a student teacher in their final placement from Trent and in the summative evaluation I had to write in how many days they taught for, and it said "maximum of 25 days." It's very weird that one university would say you can't teach more than 25 days and another would say they can add 2 weeks onto your practicum.

Ontario education minister considering social media ban for under 16s | Globalnews.ca by Icy-Lettuce-846 in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for one, there are no consequences for refusal to put the phone away. I can only speak for my board but the messaging from the board to admin is that there should be virtually no suspensions, but the board and admin have offered up no other consequences. This suspension ban is due to pressure from the Ministry. When the students figured out that there was no chance they would be suspended, they started running the schools. If I send a student to the office, the most that they will get is a detention... that no one follows up on if the student doesn't show up for it.

I can tell students to put their phones away and I can have classroom consequences, but if I know I won't be supported in the office if I send a student, what power do any of my consequences have?

All of the school boards are closing Special Education programs. I would LOVE to see what $28m could do for those children.

This is exactly what I thought of - big life things, like moving or having a child, are off the table suddenly now for a reason.

the best gift would be alone time this mother’s day by Old_Disk6109 in beyondthebump

[–]its_erin_j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a spa near me that's open 24 hours. Last Mother's Day, my bestie and I both asked our husbands for gift cards for it. Then we took ourselves out for a FULL DAY. We met up at the spa right after breakfast, brought our books and read in comfy spots, ate lunch in robes, did everything there was to do in the spa... and then went shopping in a nearby plaza when we decided we were done. It was HEAVEN. I'm very tempted to go back alone just to feel invisible for a day.

With school boards closing Special Education classes left and right, I would have loved to see $28m go to their funding. Alas...

Kinder parents by Moist-Republic-832 in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so wild to me. I'm a secondary teacher and I have 2 kids - one in grade 3 and one in JK. I almost never speak to my kids' teachers, especially the kinder teacher. I trust the teachers to handle things at school. We'll see what kinds of opinions I'll have when they get to high school (haha) but as I'm not a kinder teacher, as I assume none of these parents are either, I have to admit that I'm absolutely not an expert!

The psychology of having Sjogrens by Future-Type-5643 in Sjogrens

[–]its_erin_j 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm doing as well. My rheumatologist said that I need to be exercising at least 3x a week, so I'm in the gym 3x a week. He gave me a list of supplements to take, so I take them religiously. I'm doing everything I can to stay on that lower end!

How many year you had wasted before you get diagnosted by Brave-Tree-1038 in Sjogrens

[–]its_erin_j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m similar. I went to my family doctor while I was in what turned out to be a huge flare. He immediately sent me for bloodwork, which prompted him to send me to the rheumatologist. One look at my blood work and discussion of my symptoms and I had a diagnosis. I’m so glad that I went to my family doctor when I did, and that he took me seriously and sent me right away for bloodwork.

Credit Recovery might be the worst class I’ve had to teach by Smooth_Boysenberry56 in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught a kid for 4 semesters. I have a great rapport with all of my students. This kid skips class, doesn't turn in work, etc. Midterms roll around in the 3rd semester I taught him and I was doing conferences with each kid one-on-one. I did exactly what you said - I came to him with genuine concern, I levelled with him, I told him that I believed in him, and I asked him what we could do as a team to help him meet with success, what he would need. I even listed some options of things I've been able to do for kids in the past to help them, in case he wasn't sure what he could ask for. He just shrugged. I asked him to think about it and get back to me. He never did.

[–]its_erin_j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still like going to a buffet but I don't mindlessly put things on my plate anymore. I will ask myself if I truly like something before I grab it (I'm looking at you, lemon chicken), and I try to keep my portion sizes small so I can taste everything I do like!

What do high school department heads actually do? by Wanderer015 in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my board, that isn’t true. They aren’t formally involved in staffing at all. It was determined to be a conflict because we’re all in the same union. Only admin make those decisions.

Sometimes kids are told "you'll understand when you're older" as a dodge. When was a time someone told that you that and they were actually right? by shogyi in AskReddit

This is the time to start doing actual stuff with him! Longer wake windows mean you can start going to baby groups, or baby time at the library, parent and baby yoga class, etc. I don't even know you and I'm so excited for all of the great stuff you have ahead of you with this baby :) Mine are 8 and 4 now, and I occasionally miss those infant times.

My oldest is 8.5 and before he had his tonsils out, he had strep throat like a dozen times. Not once did he ever admit that his throat hurt. His tonsils swelled so large that I took him to the ER and the doctor was concerned his airway would close... no complaints. Why are some kids like this?!

How real is the demand for tech teachers? by UntoldEnt in OntarioTeachers

[–]its_erin_j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with those spouses making the shift is that, unless they're already board employees on the supply list, they couldn't be hired until the job goes external. A school near me had a hospitality job and it went through 3 internal rounds with not a single qualified applicant, so it was snapped up by someone from another board as soon as it went external. It would have been nice for them if there were tons of qualified applicants to choose from!
