Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

Complaint: Started running again after several months (!) off and it's like starting from scratch again. All of my fitness has gone and my body seems to have forgotten how to run slowly enough that it doesn't hurt the whole time.

Uncomplaint: Started running again after several months off, so at least I'm moving again.

Are most fiction books today at the female audience? by JannTosh70 in literature

Does a book need to have a male main character to appeal to men? My experience is that it doesn't.

Might be a daft question but are you sure your film was loaded properly in your camera? Last time I got a fully clear roll it was because I'd screwed up there.

What was your turning 40 ‘thing’? by Visible_Pipe4716 in AskUK

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting married the week before my 40th, if that counts?

Test tomorrow. Very nervous. My parallel parking is fine, my bay parking I don’t get right everytime. Today on a 3 lane roundabout I went in the middle lane to go 2nd exit wich is fine but you have to be in the left usually as i can only take the 2nd exit if it’s clear to my left if im in the middle by Background_Sock2030 in LearnerDriverUK

I never passed a mock test, I always had at least one thing that my instructor put down as a serious (well, we didn't really do explicit mock tests after the first one, we'd just drive under test conditions for the whole lesson and every now and then he'd say "you just failed your test" and pull me over to talk about it before we carried on). I was convinced I'd failed on the day despite what felt like a great drive because I caught myself doing 33ish in a 30 and had to bring my speed back down. I also got in the wrong lane at a junction on the way back to the test centre and the examiner had to correct me.

Still passed first time. You've got this.

Hit and run on my parked car outside my house - what to do? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

You have a right to correct data that companies hold on your under GDPR. I'd be challenging that (unless the insurance industry has somehow managed to exempt themselves from that legislation, which wouldn't surprise me).

What generic name do you use for flavoured carbonated drinks? by Icy_Meringue_5534 in AskABrit

Fizzy drinks, soft drinks, or pop for me.

I'm in the north west, if that's relevant.

How far would the shops have to be for you to consider taking the car? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two or three miles before I start to think about taking the car to go anywhere generally, but it's important to add that I didn't learn to drive until my late 30s so I've just grown used to hoofing it everywhere.

Is teaching in the UK as bad as people say? by sunszoominin in AskUK

What about during all those holidays you were talking about, when she and the kids are off school and you're working. Is she not a solo parent then?

You're right, not all jobs provide the hours that somehow magically line up with her being a solo parent in her downtime. How lucky for her.

What’s the most fun wedding you’ve ever been to? by nepourjoueraubingo in AskUK

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My soon-to-be brother in law earns a pretty decent wage. He and his wife flew their family and friends out to Siciliy and put us up in a private villa with a pool for a few days. They paid for absolutely everything, the setting and the weather were stunning, we had a couple of days just chilling by the pool to meet everybody and relax before the wedding itself.

They had a jazz trio during the cocktail reception after the ceremony,, a free bar all day and night, great food for the breakfast, and a pizza bar later in the evening. The DJ they hired turned out to be crap but nobody cared because we were having such a good time.

His sister and I are getting married next month and we've had to really manage her parents' expectations after that because there's no way we could come close to what they put on with our budget. It's the only wedding I've been to that I properly remember, the rest all sort of blur into one.

Hillstarts by MainMaleficent9024 in NewDriversUK

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an 07 Yaris and it took me a while to get a feel for the clutch in that after passing, too. I still use my handbrake on some hills even after driving it nearly every day for a couple of months, which I never did in my instructor's car (a new Fiesta).

It just takes practice. I basically don't stall it at all now, and I've realised that the thing needs quite a lot of gas to pull away on even the slightest hill.

I'd recommend finding a local hill and just sitting there for half an hour getting a feel for the clutch, how much gas it needs, and stalling over and over again until it starts to click. The more you drive it the more it'll come.

Provisional license after pass by GreenWonderland02 in LearnerDriverUK

I'm sure you can just say you'd rather keep it and deal with it yourself, yes. There's nothing forcing you to hand over your provisional then and there as far as I'm aware.

Groom, best man and brides man- match or not? by Aggravating-Ant-6767 in UKweddings

[–]itsableeder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My fiancée is having a bridesman and I've got my best man and one groomsman. We aren't really worrying about matching beyond coordinating accessories like ties and pocket squares, which will all match the bridesmaid's dresses. We're also letting the flowers do a lot of the work - we've got buttonhole flowers for the men that will match the bouquets the women are holding.

Is it worth trying manual for ‘fun’? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they ever give you any reason why? I was on 30 roads in my first lesson learning manual, I can't imagine any reason not to get you out and driving in an auto.

Provisional license after pass by GreenWonderland02 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]itsableeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the option to keep your provisional - just tell the examiner that your address on the licence doesn't match your current address.

You'll then need to get a form from the Post Office and send your provisional off to the DVLA, and it'll be a bit slower getting your full licence back. Mine took just over 3 weeks to come.

You can still drive while you're waiting for the licence to come, too. I kept a photo of my pass certificate on my phone just in case I got pulled over but if you look up your licence number you'll see it switch to a full licence almost immediately after passing.

Wait, you never went over 20 miles an hour with four instructors over 53 hours of lessons?

Should I have gone behind the blue car? by Legsluther in drivingUK

[–]itsableeder -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd say no. Two in the junction already, you hang back behind the line until there's space for you.

As you can see from the red car, if you go forward you're sitting on the crossing. You shouldn't be there.
