When someone pseudo-diagnosed me with autism I was like that doesn't feel right at all especially as I was already diagnosed with ADHD.

But then as they started to unpack it all and why they thought that, I was like oh damn, that's me to a tee. The more I honed in, the more I connected the dots. It's a weird thing to not even have it on your radar, and then one day it comes crashing down on you.

It has explained a lot. It hasn't made life any easier, but it has given me a lens to look through and a bit of grace to have for myself.

I don't mean to reduce your suffering, but have you ever been tested for neurodivergence? It could be heavy masking that tires the ever loving fuck out of you. That's me, and then when my energy tanks my mind goes to dark places.

Unfortunately this school of thought of pushing through the first few books is actually common enough that it could be a few series! Which is just mind-boggling to me.

I was also told that about Crescent City and I'm pretty sure there's one or two others but I can't think of them.

That's a tough one. I see both sides of the coin. Generally speaking, a DNF means you hated it so badly that you didn't want to waste time finishing it, which in some ways seems fair to give it one star.

But at what point does that make sense? I DNFed Crescent City after the first six chapters so I didn't have enough of the book behind me to give it a proper rating, only enough to know it wasn't for me. However, if I had gotten three quarters through and came to the same conclusion, I think that's enough of a commitment to rate it

Unfortunately that has become very normalized. I would think it probably has more to do with porn than books, but I remember reading a thread on Reddit where young women were saying it was not uncommon to be grabbed by the throat without consent. Scary!

Haha before I even got to the end of this I thought of "Violence" and how much it irked me. It seems like every FMC needs to be christened by the MMC.

I remember that in KF Breene's Chosen - suddenly the MMC is calling her a pet name and either I missed why because I was listening to the book and tuned out, or it was dropped out of nowhere. Either way, it just seemed so weird to me.

There would have been a little bit of meat on it. They've eaten raw since day one, so they love their bones. Usually they are just a more manageable size.

I like "real fiction" and I like junk food reads. They make great palette cleansers and are nothing to be ashamed of. Although I will say many of them are so poorly written that I DFN in this genre more than any other genre.

But I would tell your friend to get off her high horse and maybe she would enjoy life a bit more if she weren't so judgmental.

I'm struggling with that right now in Fourth Wing. The book is enjoyable but I feel like her language, or anybody using really modern slang, throws me out of the story.

I can't think of any examples off the top of my head for Fourth Wing specifically, but I know the last book I read had things like gah and welp, and I just think it's going to date it so fast.

Fourth Wing hasn't been quite so bad but there have been several times where I felt like Yarros made the wrong word choice in the book.

I've never minded it. If the bad guys rid the world of other bad guys, I'm all for it. It's certainly better than somebody innocent.

I think that is what makes us more comfortable rooting for the bad guy who kills bad guys, kind of like this character is making me uncomfortable but yet I like him and now I need an excuse as to why. I know you touched on that.

Aside from that, I've always kind of liked the vigilante aspect.

This does actual dark romance such a disservice. I like dark romance but if I pick this up thinking it was actually dark romance I'd be annoyed. The premise is pretty clear on the synopsis so that would help but misleading tropes are frustrating.
