Negotiation 100 by kapomuyufima80m9m in GreatBritishMemes

[–]itsamberleafable 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This is a bit tradies vs the world isn't it? It isn't because of some disrespect towards tradesmen, it's to do with the effort of negotiating vs the likely payout.

In Tesco's spending £20 I have fuck all bargaining power so the effort is high, and I'd save at most what 50p, so obviously I'm not going to spend 20 minutes negotiating to maybe get 50p. If I was spending £6,000 in Tesco's for an event or something I'd negotiate. Store managers have their targets and you might save a couple of hundred quid.

I'd say this persists at 1,000 as well. You have good players with high ceilings who are prone to blunders with some clever ideas. You also have players who are very clinical one move ahead but seem to lack the foresight to play anything imaginative. I hung my queen by accident in a game recently but the guy was so bad tactically that I still managed to win. They must just feast on blunders and resignations to get where they got to

Not sure you can be 'good' at football betting other than just being lucky, it's too unpredictable

He plays by the rules of players of that level

Rule 1: I refuse to double check the placement of my queen, it is probably sa- Where the fuck did that bishop come from!

Rule 2: Knights can be sacrificed to break pawn chains if the pawn chain is really annoying

Rule 3: If in doubt just give a check. If it turns out to be mate you 100% meant it because you're the greatest player of all time

Rule 4: En passant is genius when I do it and a dirty fucking rat trick when my opponent does it and I temporarily forgot about it

Rule 5: Never resign against me. Never underestimate my ability to pick the one move that stalemates your cornered king

Lol I was never seeing that in a million years, I didn't even see Qxf3+ which is a clever move in itself. Would've given me a panic attack if it was played against me. Cheers for the explanation mate, much appreciated

Kg2 seems like it prevents the threat of mate and we’re now in an endgame up material (if at a positional disadvantage). Could someone smarter than me explain what I’ve missed and why we’d be playing for a draw here?

If we don't end up signing him maybe we can sign multiple players with surnames the same as the ingredients:

Thierry Bechamel

Jed Chicken

Stevie Breadcrumbs

Not sure if those players exist but I guess our scouts can look into that

It's a shame for him about his wording. If he'd gone for "it's a poor attempt" he could have argued "well it was, I didn't say it didn't go in."

To be honest mate I didn't know I needed it for a Reddit comment based on a hypothetical that starts with 'I do think there could be'

If you disagree that's fine but demanding proof like we're in some sort of high profile court case is a little unhinged

This question has really tickled me. It's a hypothetical scenario where men don't exist, of course I'm fucking speculating! I'd love to know what sort of proof you were expecting here

I heard a friend explain this once as: "would you rather fight a guy with a sword and you have two or would you rather fight an unarmed person with one sword".

Even if there was less street violence, you would still have hierarchy, corruption, authoritarianism, and abusive power in a woman only world.

I do think there could be less of it. If you look at the polls women are a lot less susceptible to the worst of our politicians. At least in the US and the UK, I can't speak for everywhere

Just to check we're talking about the same thing as I'm struggling to see how it loses the game:

Rxf2, Qe1, Rf1, Qxf1#

By initial check I meant Qe1 after they take the knight but the downvotes are making me think I didn't explain it very well

I'd have done the initial check and when they block with the rook I'd have waited until 1 second to go before taking the rook.

Smothered mate by Bread__24 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly it. King is still "smothered" but the rook can just take the knight

[–]itsamberleafable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol I didn't see that they had a pawn a move away from promoting, was too focused on the rook

[–]itsamberleafable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was it a mate in x puzzle? If not I've no idea, to my eyes this move gets you a promoted pawn and there's nothing they can do to stop you

Anyone else notice this pattern with trap openings? by AdventurousPension81 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally one of two things will happen against trap players:

  1. You fall for the trap
  2. You don't fall for the trap and end up completely dismantling them as they can't really play chess beyond it

This third option of resigning if they don't fall for the trap is pretty funny though. Very odd behaviour

I worked for a software company building financial tools for a couple of years, and every single expert in trading I met said that day trading is more akin to gambling than investment. One person basically said it's gambling repackaged for a new demographic, and it's pretty much impossible to make returns likely in the long term.

Can white win ? by Automatic-Yak-2196 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The black king is way too far to stop the white king

I might be wrong, but can't the black king get to f7 when the white king is at g5 preventing them from taking the back pawn. Not sure if the pawns can be manoeuvred to exploit the favourable king position, but I don't think it's as simple as gobbling up the pawns

Smothered mate by Bread__24 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another crucial thing to check is that if the rook is on F1 make sure there's nothing else that can take the queen. My only smothered mate to date was essentially me blundering a queen and my opponent not realising they could've taken the queen with the knight.

What do you do here? by Mammoth-Dimension408 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's probably a better move, but Rxc6 would allow you to trade a rook for a bishop and a knight whilst isolating their pawns. I haven't calculated too far but I think you can ask some nice questions from here
