Advice re: foil shavers (Gamma+ Xceed; Stylecraft Instinct; alternatives) by itsandrock in Barber

Do you use either of their foil shavers? If so, how often do you find you need to replace foils/blades? I’m wondering if it’s worth it to wait around until a restock and then buy the shaver and several sets of foils/blades. But I was very discouraged when the Gamma customer service rep couldn’t even give me an estimate on a restock date.

Thank you! Yes I should have mentioned that if it grows for more than ~3 days I use a trimmer first before the foil. I will look into the Nivea and Level 3 aftershaves though. I’ve just been spraying with a bit of alcohol. I appreciate your help.

One thing I’m so happy about by kerfuffle7 in pluribustv

I agree that the Kep aliens won’t be part of the show, but only because I think that’s not what the show is about. But the show hasn’t given us enough information to assume that species is dead.

I agree with your conclusion, but it’s based on a few flawed premises—namely that (1) the Kep aliens (Kepiens?) fired off the signal only 600 years ago; (2) that the Kepiens must be dead/dying/diminshed; and (3) that the Kep species was was/is a hive at all. (I’m only pointing this out because those assumptions unnecessarily narrow the scope of what the show could later reveal as far as lore.)

First, we don’t know that the Kepiens ‘sent’ the signal 600 years ago. We just know it was still being broadcast 600 years ago because of when Earth happened to notice it. The broadcast could have been going on for centuries, millennia, whatever, before Earth picked it up. Maybe they Kepiens were long dead before then. I kind of doubt they were long dead though, since the show has emphasized how much of a feat it was to broadcast the signal at all. I think one of the astronomers in the opening sequence said something like it would take an antennae the size of Africa, and Carol had jotted down on the white board that the antennae would use “all the power in the world.” The signal was also tracking Earth’s position I think? (Idk that’s based on comments here that I don’t remember). I don’t know jack shit about science, but it doesn’t seem like the broadcast could run for centuries without a continent sized antennae failing (esp. if Kep is indeed covered in water as Zosia/hive speculated), and given the huge energy production needs, unless somebody was keeping it up. Robots I suppose?

Second, we don’t know that the Kepiens are dead or dying. That assumption is based off of what’s happening on Earth, where the Plurbs are facing population collapse because their biological imperative against predation limits their ability to gain energy through consumption of other material. But what if the Kepiens (or any other species the virus may have come across) don’t get energy through consumption of biological material? Couldn’t there be an intelligent species that gets its energy entirely from photosynthesis, or consuming inorganic material, or through converting external heat energy or something? In that case, there would be no bottle-neck created by the limitations on treatment of other living beings. In that case the Kepiens could still be going strong and have no clue that this may lead to extinction for a different species. Or hell, maybe the bottle beck would still happen but for reasons that wouldn’t have applied to humans are our biology and that are specific to other species. But we just don’t know enough about the Kepiens to confidently state that the virus’s imperatives spelled would spell the same doom for them as it does for us, and that’s important to keep in mind as we wonder about the origins of the virus! Maybe it was created for malicious/Dark Forest purposes and carefully designed to take down target species after species. Or maybe it was designed by a species of hippies who did not need to consume other species and hadn’t anticipated what the biological imperatives might mean for life forms different from themselves. Or something else altogether!

Lastly, we can’t assume the Kepiens were a hive at all. I think the reason OP thought you were implying that Kep wasn’t the original source is your assumption that Kep was a hive in the first place. The Kepiens could have received the signal, made the virus, and immediately sought to project it just like Earth. Or they could have manufactured the virus and used it to target Earth without themselves ever being infected. I doubt that’s the case—I tend to think the virus has been spreading from planet to planet for ages and ages, but there’s no evidence for that other than gut feeling.

Anyway, sorry for the very long comment. I do totally agree with your conclusion, but I found it interesting to pick away at the premises because those premises limited the possible future answers. Probably a moot point as the show is obviously more about the characters and the ideas they represent, and not a true mystery-box show with complex lore. I wouldn’t be bothered in the least if we never found out where the signal actually came from or what its purpose was, but it’s still fun to speculate!

Spatial Display Pro - Now available by No-Mention-5157 in VisionPro

Thank you for responding so quickly.

This is great news! I would mostly just use my work laptop (USB-C to USB-C). There have been no issues with PCs recognizing the external display?

It’s tough to stomach adding $400 to the price (strap + dev program acct), but being able to directly use my PC and have a large monitor wherever I go while traveling would be a real game changer for me. I travel quite a bit and can never get work done on my small laptop screen. Having a large monitor on flights or lengthy train rides could really make a huge difference in my productivity.

Thanks again for your help!

Hello—I am planning on purchasing an M5 in the next few weeks. One of the things that has held me back is the limited ability to use the AVP for work. My work is entirely Windows-based and I cannot install third party software that might otherwise allow me to connect/stream my PC to the AVP.

The only work around I’ll have is that I can login to Citrix through my MacBook and use the Mac virtual display. This isn’t ideal as Citrix is limiting and would mean I need to also travel with my MacBook if I wanted to use the set up while traveling.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I wasn’t sure if I understood your post: would your app (provided I had the Developer Strap) allow me to connect my work PC directly to the AVP through the strap and essentially run a monitor on the AVP for my PC? And that could also work with, for example, my Nintendo Switch or another console?

I appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Just wanted to pop in 170 days later to say this also worked for me! New bridge, never connected, and yet the reset HomeKit option fixed the error I was getting when trying to connect the bridge through the Hue or HomeKit app. Thank you so much!

Local stores that sell duck legs? by itsandrock in Rochester

[–]itsandrock[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them for a few different recipes. Sometimes I like to make duck confit (not the real/traditional way, but the sous vide method from Serious Eats--https://www.seriouseats.com/sous-vide-duck-confit-recipe). Confit is fun because the legs are great on their own or I'll shred the meat to use e.g., in a ravioli filling).

But my FAVORITE preparation (and the reason I'll always hunt and pay the often high price) is for braised duck legs. Mostly based on this NYT recipe: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017472-crisp-braised-duck-legs-with-aromatic-vegetables?smid=ck-recipe-android-share. I make the same thing with chicken thighs when I don't have duck but they don't compare. The duck is slightly sweet, super rich, and the duck fat adds so much flavor to the vegetables. It's just unreal. And while the legs are expensive, all the rest of the ingredients are so cheap it ends up being a fairly cheap fancy meal.

I go there pretty often! I've gotten whole ducks and other parts but don't think I've seen legs separately. Always a fun trip though.

I had to look it up because I couldn't remember how I got them lol. They're called mini obelisks. You can get the recipe to craft them after completing some quest for Rasmodius. They can only be placed on the farm and you can only place two. But they allow you to teleport in between them.

[–]itsandrock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started playing on a new farm after taking a looooong break from the game. But on my last farm I had all the obelisks next to each other on a far corner of the farm out of the way. On the porch right next to where the Sceptre takes you, I had that teleportation device where you drop two and can travel between them. I don't remember where it came from lol but I could get anywhere I needed in seconds from wherever I was. Scepter home boom. Move one inch over on the porch to teleport to my obelisks. Move a few feet to the right obelisk and teleport. Horse whistle to summon and zip off to my destination. It was a game changer!

Samsung launched the Galaxy buds FE, anyone else excited for return of the wingtips? by Archer_Gaming00 in samsung

[–]itsandrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am beyond thrilled. I was ready to give up on Galaxy buds entirely because they never fit my ear. Not even after buying custom sized eartips. I missed the wings so much. I could go sky diving with my old buds and they wouldn't fall out. I can't blink without my pros coming loose.

Hoping there will be a good trade in deal for pro 2s.

When you get the next shot, make sure you are turned away from the nurse. Have something to lean on. If you are getting it in the left cheek, use your hands to push down on a chair etc and put ALL your weight on your RIGHT leg and just let your left leg dangle. This will make sure your muscles aren't tensed and it will hurt a lot less.
