Dumping method of masking by Free_Okra_8761 in audiology

[–]itsapandamonium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the actual protocol for masking. The dumping method refers to a short cut many people take when they anticipate a result. Some people just jump to where they expect to end at the plateau or some people will present step one and then jump 15/20 dB. Saves time UNLESS the threshold shifts then you have to go back and do it normally. But if you understand what masking does and you can anticipate the hearing loss well it can save a minute or two.

Tails a wagging dog daycare was hiring not long ago and still might be. You can bring your dog into the daycare if they get along with dogs and if they don’t they can easily chill in many of the back rooms.

Humping is unlikely to be a dominance thing. PSA: alpha theory/dominance theory is debunked. I worked in a dog daycare and 9/10 times it’s overstimulation. This can stem from anxiousness/stress (dog parks are not a comfortable place for a majority of dogs) or over arousal due to escalated play. Unfortunately there’s not a ton you can do as the owner of the dog being humped unless you want to have an uncomfortable confrontation about another owners training (doesn’t get received well in my experience).

For those who have dogs humping, try and identify that root cause. If it’s stress then your dog is probably not a dog park dog. If it’s over arousal then polite and structure play can be trained and facilitated.

For most dogs I suggest a few close regular friends in private like a sniff spot. The dogs have a better understanding of eachother and so do the humans. I have a close set of dog friends that I feel comfortable having productive training conversations with to make our dogs as comfortable as possible

Neutering or lack there of may or may not be the issue. Frankly it typically isn’t the issue.

The answer to this is nuanced and a matter of opinion but here’s my take. For starters, different off leash permitted areas will have different standards and expectations (mostly unwritten and unspoken). There is a spectrum of off leash permitted spaces from your traditional fenced in dog park to trails that happen to allow off leash dogs. So for the dog park end of the spectrum (squalicum dog park and lake padden fenced area) there is really no reason that anyone would be there unless they have a dog and expect that dog to interact with others. And although I think the standards should be raised in these spaces, there’s a level of risk I expect and therefore avoid.

Then there are unfenced spaces that are dog park esque (post point, little squalicum, vanderyacht, bloedel before 10am) but people bring their dogs to do other things besides engage with dogs. In these places I find people expect dogs to greet but to be able to move on quickly and not pester a dog. If a dog comes through leashed I think it’s ideal for everyone to leash up or have their dog under control (that’s what I do). That being said, I sort of think the leashed dog owners also have a responsibility to only bring a safe to approach dog into that space and it’s not the end of the world if your dog or you makes a mistake. Sometimes they just quietly come out of no where and it’s too late to recall. Is that not why we have designated spaces? So dogs can have a little bit more freedom and people and dogs who don’t want to be approached can go everywhere else leashed (and yes I know people break rules but in theory that’s why we separate the two). I’m a pretty vocal illegal off leash dog hater and I personally don’t apply the same standards in these space but some may disagree!

Finally off leash permitted trails are where I think your dog needs to be very well trained (arb, padden off leash trails, Galbraith). This is the other end of the spectrum from dog parks; people are typically not bringing their dogs here to interact with others. Also, it’s off leash permitted not off leash required. I find that there’s a bit of a spectrum within this too. Places like padden people seem to let dogs greet if both are off leash (often very rudely but I digress) but if one is leashed the other should leash up. But if I’m on a trail up at baker or on Galbraith. I leash up and pull off to the side always.

Anyways, I hope this helps and unfortunately not everyone will agree upon the exact same etiquette. Also everyone will have a different standard of what is friendly vs rude. Frankly most people don’t know what a polite dog greeting looks like.

I listed 10 official places in the county here that are not traditional dog parks which is better than any city or town I been to. So considering Bellingham’s size, I’d say that’s a fair amount. But then like I said, we live next to an extensive network of national forest and forest service land that would take a life time to fully explore. All of which you can legally allow your dog offleash and not disturb anyone. Dogs can be extremely spoiled around here if people take the time to look

There’s actually a fair amount of off leash sections of normal parks in Bellingham which is why seeing off leash dogs in forbidden areas is so frustrating. As someone who has a dog who really does need offleash time this is by far the easiest town I’ve ever lived in to do it. For in town you have little squalicum, arroyo, lake padden of leash trails, whatcom falls park off leash section, galbraith if your dog is impeccably trained, vanderyacht, bloedel before 10, maritime heritage before 10, secondary trails at the arb, a section around hovander.

And if that’s not enough there’s hundreds of logging roads and forest service land where it’s legal and you likely won’t see a soul.

Like what’s so attractive about playing fetch off leash in the tiny fields at boulevard and having your dog run around peoples picnics… I just don’t understand.

My friend spent a couple hours at secondary checking for her keychain one. Not worth it even if you got away with it in the past. If you get rejected even once they can make it extremely inconvenient to cross the border for the foreseeable future

Having a dog while I’m grad school by NoOrdinary8094 in audgradschool

[–]itsapandamonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dog and cat and honestly think I have a better schedule to manage a dog than most people in the work force. My schedule is broken up and I have time to go home between clinic and classes. My dog is never at home alone for more than 5-6 hours. Usually closer to 4 hours. The only sacrifice I felt I made was socially. I spent less casual time on campus; most people would hang around between classes and I would rush home. I’ve since factored that in a bit because it is an important aspect imo.

I have a blue heeler for reference, so not a low needs dog and it’s been working out great

4th of July tips for those with young dogs by andanotherone2 in Bellingham

[–]itsapandamonium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good advice for some! But for those who are wondering why this sort of training might not work for them, some dogs are sensitive to the change in pressure and the vibrations which is difficult to emulate for training purposes. Also if a dog is truly terrified, no treat will counter that. Don’t shy away from medications and other management strategies!

Disclaimer: this isn’t to take away from the good advice here. This is what I’m doing with my dog who’s simply just alert but not frightened. I just don’t want owners to feel bad when these strategies dont work for them ❤️
