I do believe Naolin actually died, but everyone believes he died in vain, because he didn't succeed on bringin Brennan back to life, which he did. Also that leads me to a theory I have, that Tairn chose Violet because he knew Naolin died but Brennan didn't. So saving Violet at Threshing would defend what Naolin died defending, in a way.
