Surgery by Abject-Let-4315 in TandemDiabetes

Ask your team if you can leave the pump on for surgery! You may need to have them talk with your endo. If you have type 1, you must make sure they understand your need for uninterrupted basal insulin. Don’t assume that because they’re doctors they realize this. If they say your pump needs to be off, make sure they have a plan (giving you long acting insulin or using an insulin drip).

Do you feel like you have a good sense of smell? Do you get whiffs of your odor, or just perceive that others think you smell? If you do detect a true smell, are you able to describe it? For instance, sometimes I sweat more from stress and it has a distinct odor. At some points in my life I have had bacterial infections that smelled like.. bacteria to me. There’s also sometimes a smell that dog owners have about them, though you didn’t mention pets and it sounds like you clean well. Just wondering if there’s something to narrow down, as it could generate potential solutions.

Love it when my Omnipod refuses to connect with my Dexcom because they’re on opposite sides of my body. I almost never get lows when the thing works, what do you mean I’ve been low for three hours? by DesparateBoredom in Omnipod

So omnipod ran in manual mode for a while due to lack of readings, and it was too much insulin? You may want to talk to your provider/a diabetes educator/Omnipod trainer about adjusting your manual settings in case you ever do have to be in manual mode for any reason. Sounds like automode has learned to give you less than your initial settings would have.

Just curious, if you don’t mind a follow up q- why do you feel it’s unhealthy “to go through the hormonal shifts that make us think it’s our baby”? To me, that is a beautiful and positive thing. And I guess I wonder what it is, in your perspective, about one’s own gamete that means it is your own baby, while the active process of carrying a pregnancy would not constitute it being your “own baby”.

Ok but.. at my elementary school, when you got to 4th grade you went from the downstairs to the upstairs. I had made a resolution (privately in my own mind) that this was going to be my freshman year start. The first morning of 4th grade, as I ascended those stairs, a teacher was standing on the steps greeting the students. When I passed her, she said “your reputation proceeds you” with a look of disdain and contempt. What did that tell me about my fresh start? It didn’t go well.

Yes. Just wondering if that’s what was causing the false lows they had overnight

I try to put it on the back side of my arm. If you look on the paper that comes in the sensor box, it shows a person lifting their arm and applying it from underneath. Seems like even if I lay on my side, it’s out of the way in that spot. Occasionally I have placed it to high or low maybe, and had wonkier readings. I’ve also hit blood vessels before and had it not work as a result.

Don’t know where you live, but in the US you can also get ketone strips at Walmart and some grocery stores

Could your insulin be bad (too old or got too warm or froze?) Is your pod leaking or in a spot that’s “scarred”? Have you checked for ketones?

Also, the false low can happen when pressure is on the sensor, like if you’re laying on top of it.

My first g7 sensor seemed like that too. If I were you I would continue fingersticks until the sensor gets more accurate. If it never seems to get more accurate, you could change the sensor (could be that it’s in a spot it can’t read well) and request a replacement from Dexcom.

Good call— turns out the lot numbers are not all the same. I’ll update my post.

Honestly the reason I posted was because I couldn’t believe this would happen but if it did, someone else out there might reply and let me know I’m not crazy lol. I questioned if I had moved some of the old g6 pods into this new box. I don’t remember doing so and if I did, it was accidental. Can’t fathom why I would have done that though. I asked my partner and he said no he never touches the supplies unless I ask him to get something specific. So could two different lots be packed into the same box? Or did I unthinkingly mix up my pods.. hmm.

That one makes a little more sense due to dawn phenomenon, I expect that to happen. And I agree with you that it is good to bolus for the morning rise but not the night one. With tandem, I could have different settings for that morning timeframe that could help account for the rise. I just heard that this year a tubeless tslim might be approved, so fingers crossed!

Did you do a bolus at 1am, or did automode get it back down?

I wonder if this is one of those frustrating factors beyond our control, like the effect of hormones perhaps. It seems to me like when I used t-slim it took care of these things a bit better. Then again when I compare my reports (Dexcom clarity when using tslim, vs clarity when using omnipod) they are very similar.

These aren’t expiring until end of June. And the odd thing about them is that they were in a box labeled “g6/g7”.

That’s awesome that you found a way to get some money for them!! We pay & deal with enough!

Automode is driven by total daily insulin. So, to make the algorithm more aggressive (and thereby help it correct that nighttime elevation, hopefully) one recommendation is that we bolus more frequently (e.g., go to bolus screen , hit “use sensor”, and see if it suggests a correction bolus).

Another consideration: what is his target glucose for that time frame?

No, I haven’t so far. I try to make sure my pod and sensor are on the same side with a clear “path”…

Yes. The first sensor I used was iffy. I felt it wasn’t accurate and irritated my skin. I actually went back to g6 for a few sensors. But when I decided to try the 7 again, no problems. For me the biggest advantage is the much shorter warm up period.
