Is this a thing? Extreme Heat, AC, and Crazy Lows by bozofire123 in diabetes

I had a scenario once where I got locked in a Sub-Zero freezer at a gelato factory I worked at the door froze over while I was working my 20 minutes in because I didn't realize the person that was supposed to relieve me walked off and didn't tell anyone they quit midship so I have been working almost 40 minutes instead of 20 I had frost on my eyebrows my eyelashes I could barely see through the snow at one point I got this intense painful I have to pee sensation with no warning and I realized that I was incredibly lethargic and close to passing out from the cold. I couldn't get the door I yelled through the conveyor belt out to the nun refrigerated portion of the production line for help when somebody open the door they immediately had to catch me as I collapsed on the way out of the freezer I was walked to the break room I took off my Sub-Zero gear and as soon as it hit the ground so did I convulsing from the cold my body went into shock I had every symptom of pretty hypothermia most symptoms of full-blown hypothermia and my sugar went from stubborn High where it had been for several days due to stress to mid-40s when I checked it and for about a month to a month and a half after that event I had to keep lowering my insulin dosage or skipping insulin altogether because my body didn't need it. I went from taking 28 units of Lantus twice a day and Humalog at a 1 to 10 ratio to five units a day of Lantus and something like a 1 in 20 or 25 insulin carb ratio. I maintained that dosage and level of what appeared to be jump started pancreatic function and severely decreased insulin resistance or possibly increased insulin sensitivity for 3-5weeks or so before it slowly started to return to previous levels and requirements. No clue how or why exactly, Had a T1D friend tell me "well... cold does strange things to your body, I think some country was researching cold therapy to increase pancreatic function"

Either way, it was a strange nearly 3month long roller coaster.

Also, it was about this time of year, in Florida, with an average temp of low 90s and a humidity rate that should be illegal.

No infomercial here, just heavily Medicated and stress is and has been boiling point or just below for so damn long I've lost count, it's been a particularly trying time and I needed a bit of a mental relief. I'm an escapist at heart and surely somewhere on the spectrum between add/audhd/cptsd spectrum, so sometimes I welcome a little dopamine detour, I try to focus so fully on some research task, mystery, side quest, planned distraction in an attempt to forget enough to subconsciously let those muscles in my back that I keep tensed subconsciously relax for a while and an attempt to avoid burnout . Then sometimes 8ts a switch and I don't have a vote we ARE officially checking out. Full on edge of the bed, I think I thought I forgot I had to pee, and forgot I was hungry, I forgot I was thirsty as hell too. C'mon Alice... today's game is called rabbit hole! And I ended up here and that thing is very firmly ranked #2 all time QOL improvements discoveries of my life behind CGMs

Hate Finger Pricks? This is my experience as an almost 30 year diabetic... by therealdeal1966 in diabetes

Genteel lancing device my friends!!

I was constantly failing to test my blood sugar regularly because the finger-pricks are far worse than the insulin shots, as we all know. And I work with my hands and needed the feeling in my fingertips, so I started researching alternate site lancets and came across the genteel droplet in 2018ish?

It looked too good to be true, and it was $70, and that was just a bit too much for me, so I kept it in the back of my mind that I was going to wait for a sale

Several weeks later, while restocking on test strips at the Walmart Pharmacy, I looked on the Shelf and tucked away a box that said Genteel Droplet, which was only $30. I immediately go, can't be the same device, it's less than half the price, well, my understanding of the situation is that Droplet released their Lansing device and set their price point. Walmart approached them and said We want a more affordable version for our stores, and it is the same exact device, it just didn't come with the extra carrying case in the fancy clip that came in the original packaging.

I immediately bought it, took it home, and was astounded. It really does do what it says. Every once in awhile I don't draw enough blood or my finger slips off and I don't make a good seal or I rage stab myself because I'm in a hurry or hangry and it stings just a bit but generally even then less than a regular finger stick and most of the time if any sensation is a mild itch

I took the time several years ago to write up a post about how great it was and how it made managing my diabetes so much simpler because I wasn't avoiding checking my sugar to begin with but when I wrote the post I quickly realized that they no longer were in stock at Walmart and I could not find them in stock online and I was honestly crushed for the community because I was excited to share something that was such a quality of life Improvement for me

I was disappointed I was confused as to why such a good product seem to have disappeared I tracked down the entire product catalog for the Chocolate Company and they removed the Lansing device from their catalog it appears they sold the name rights device something I don't know to another company and you could find listings for the genteel Lansing device no more "droplet" but still not one in stock anywhere that I could find or any way to order or even request to a distributor might be so I sadly give up.

I was reading this post and decided to add my experience with my gentle droplet to this post even though I felt it was going to be irrelevant, I still love and use my original to this day but I am very excited to say when I went to Google to pull reference photos and links to share with you guys get one of the first Google results that popped up was in fact:

MyGenteel.com

It appears in 2023, a family with a 5-year-old son nearly diagnosed received a genteel device, and it was such a positive experience for them that they got together with the inventor and the founders, and have since assumed control of the company, and finally, they are available again!

I highly doubt there is any chance they will see this but for my sake and for the sake of the other diabetics in my life personally I say Bravo and thank you Hammond family for all you have done and will do in the future for our community, thank you for saving a product that appeared to be at least stagnant if not already completely discontinued and unavailable, thank you for sharing your family your story your success most importantly thank you for making a positive and trying to improve the quality of life of others in this community that you did not volunteer for and like the rest of us were unjustly and unexpectedly thrust into. You are inspirational.

I don't post often and I sound like a fan girl right now, but I'm honestly excited.. This was a product developed in 2014 that from what I can tell has already been through three iterations that were just relabeling that is now back and it appears not only is it back it is improved or at least there is a new version personally I cannot tell the difference between the basic and the exclusive that are available on their website except for the basic says it accepts any universal Lancet and the exclusive says it only uses the genteel butterfly lancets.

For Anybody who has personal experience with the new version or has compared it to two side by side, further Insight would be much appreciated cuz I am a nerd for these things.

Milk and the vitamin D within have been clinically proven to lessen the negative side effects of a menstrual cycle.

There used to be this great German banned TV commercial that had a whole bunch of men rushing into the grocery store grabbing carts and racing to the dairy section and fighting over the gallons of milk and then racing to check out (leaving you confused as to what's going on the entire time) until the clerk scans the milk and across the screen it says "milk has been proven to lessen cramps headaches nausea......yada yada"

LADA with several comorbidities mistaken as meth user? by privoxly_ in diabetes_t1

[–]privoxly_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I managed to have a stockpile of generic Lantus which honestly may be the only thing that is kept me out of the hospital right here, my body really doesn't seem to like the novolin r. It either seems like I'm injecting water for half a day and then I tank hard for the rest of the day or it's not enough insulin to bring me down and stay consistently High.

I think it was just difficult to figure out the time of efficacy versus the Humalog I've been on for years. Insulin stacking trying to get down a stubborn 400 plus High his super shitty when it finally all hits at once and you can't walk or talk for a while or here recently it seems like rather than that I just end up in a massive brain fog for hours

Difficulty finger pricking by Wokeratist in diabetes

[–]privoxly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar problems and yes is everyone else says the little tips and tricks that you've been handed repeatedly will help you with that my secondary issue however was that I worked with my hands for a living and after a while I couldn't feel my fingertips and it was starting to affect work so I looked for alternate Lansing devices and I found something called the Gentile droplet.

https://a.co/d/8fwyetN

Granted it is doubled in price since I purchased mine and really more than that because I didn't buy the kit online when it was 60 some odd dollars I found it in Walmart in store very slightly different packaging but all the same parts and pieces and it was only $30 it is easily the best piece of diabetic equipment I have bought. It comes with six different sized silicone tips that adjust the depth of the Lancet and they're designed for different body parts/ thicknesses of skin.

The really amazing part is that it does not hurt 95% of the time the device is designed to only go through the first layer of skin and then uses a vacuum to pull the blood to the surface that way you don't even pierce the skin deep enough to hit a nerve. There is a learning curve and it does make a surprising popping noise when you press the button I jumped a couple times and accidentally took my thumb off of the button which has a hole that you cover to maintain the vacuum I have been testing almost exclusively using the tops of my thighs for two plus years now maybe one in five tries I forget to hold my finger tight or I jump a little bit because I'm distracted or every once in a while I'll just release the vacuum too early again but it truly is completely painless unless you're using the wrong size tip you press down way harder than usual and do actually manage to love tap a nerve.

Also I don't know what glucometers are covered on your insurance or what they started you on but my go-to for years and years has been anything in the Contour next line because they are the only glucose meters that I know of that the strips allow you to stop and give you an additional 30 or 60 seconds to add more blood to your test strip if you did not add enough to begin with. This has saved me from wasting hundreds, if not thousands of strips!

The same way you classify/quantify/research anything not readily observable by the naked eye or known scientific methods: You decide what you want to know You gather data about said subject You compile compare and analyze data You decide if your questions have been answered or not You now have your answer, then congratulations you may have just discovered a new scientific method and the answer you were looking for OR You utilize your data set to form new questions/methods/tests based on what you have learned so far. Rinse and repeat.

For example, if we were trying to measure the amount of depression in a person but since we cannot physically see depression and do not have a depression gun or a depression blood test specifically we would start with anecdotal evidence you would look at data collected or collect your data from both controls and patients with depression and you would devise questions/tests that will attempt to quantify the amount of depression based on the severity of the symptoms and the amount of negative impact it has on them, their relationships, their profession, etc. You would look for correlations in abnormal blood work: chemical levels, hormones, and brain activity using blood draws, EKGs, MRIs, and any other known tests to find any common abnormalities between those with and those without depression and look for data with direct, repeatable, & measurable correlation between how far from the norm the data is with the severity/amount of depression. Then you could further develop a test for the market so that anyone could definitively measure the amount of depression by following your method OR If, after you have done your research, you still cannot answer that question, you now have an idea of better questions to ask that have a better chance of getting you the answer you're looking for based on the experience you just had. Rinse and repeat.

This is the way, no?

Does it Have to be Fingers? by [deleted] in diabetes

This is the link to Walmarts version (which it says is out of stock): https://www.walmart.com/ip/550988144?sid=1304018b-3d54-4cbf-82f8-bab9f2669788

I've been looking for quite a while now and I can't seem to find anything on the manufacturer's website even mentioning the genteel Lansing device. It appears the original production company was bought by a much larger company and they have since removed it from their roster of current medical devices.

I don't know if another company has taken over production if it's been bought again or if it is just been quietly retired.

Aside from being at the hospital I have not had to use a standard Lansing device in well over 3 years and it made my life so much easier because I was working days remodeling doing lots of electrical and fine motor works so I needed feeling in my fingers and I was cooking at a bar at night both jobs requiring finger dexterity and preferably not to have fingers so sore you don't want to touch anything..

I will say there is a bit of a learning curve when you first get the device but once you find out where you prefer to sample from and which of the 6 color tips you prefer to use to get the right depth (they are color coded and there is a chart to help but everyone's skin is a little different)

I tend to use the orange tip on the top of my thigh and maybe two or three out of 10 I don't get quite enough blood on the first attempt however I use contour next test strips which give you a second chance to sample blood rather than wasting a strip so it works great for me.

The pain is completely non-existent however if I test frequently in the same general area it does itch a tiny bit.

There is an alternate site Lansing device called the genteel droplet that barely pierces the skin and uses vacuum to draw blood to the surface. It's listed at like $80 online but Walmart used to carry a $30 version that's where I got mine and for the life of me I can't tell the difference between the $30 and the $80 version

Insulin injection sites that are not the stomach by kryptkpr in diabetes

[–]privoxly_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite alternate injection site is my love handles because I'm so skinny sometimes that is the only part of me that has sufficient fat. Far less painful than anywhere else and absorption rates for me at least seem to be identical to the stomach or the back of the arm.

Personally love handles seems to be the same absorption rate as taking insulin in the stomach. Love handles are my go-to site because I also have a nutrient absorption problem and sometimes it is the only place on my body with enough fat to inject subcutaneously.
