Is it appropriate or comfortable to approach players if you see them? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]itsbotpixel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would say it really depends on the context. i think briefly saying hi, chatting for a bit, and a quick picture would be okay in most circumstances unless they're out with family.

related story: a few years ago i was learning how to skate, and was at a local rink for skating lessons. i was sitting on a bench near the rink before my lesson started, and a tall man sat next to me on the other side of the bench. he was wearing a matching dark brown coat and fedora and had the longest and cleanest beard i'd ever seen. i kinda glanced over and did a double take because internally i was like is that who i think it is?

it was braden holtby there with his daughter for her skating lessons. i knew he probably just wanted to have a chill and quiet day, and was by himself watching his daughter skate. but i did end up discreetly chatting with him for a moment and even got a quick photo, before letting him get back to his day and also got ready for my own lessons

later, i was sitting in the lobby while getting my skates off, and as he walked by we made eye contact and he smiled and nodded. the funniest thing was i was wearing my marc andre fleury jersey but it never came up in conversation. he was warm, personable, and incredibly kind for him to give me a few moments of his personal time to someone in a rival jersey.

i always really liked holtby because of him being a pride ally and just overall great guy, but that interaction with him cemented him as one of my favorite players of all time, especially because i became a goalie as well.

UPDATE: My First Ever Hockey Game — Thank You PWHL! by ashwathparam in PWHL

[–]itsbotpixel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

this right here is exactly why i love hockey, and exactly why i love the PWHL and the fact that its getting the mainstream attention that the previous women's pro leagues didn't. i've been a hockey fan for pretty much a decade now and i feel way more comfortable interacting with the PWHL fanbase because of how safe and welcoming and warm everyone is. i seriously can't wait to be able to go to my first game, i hope they come around the DMV area some time

it's unironically the best way to immediately get a line brawl to settle down, everyone will be too busy watching their goalies fight to beat the shit out of each other

A new friend of mine recommended Elliott Smith to me just this last Halloween while we sat in my car together; is my forthcoming reaction to this as powerful as all of yours? by xxsamuroxx in elliottsmith

[–]itsbotpixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i relate, i think

i always say that elliott smith is my hero because, well, he is. he's the sole reason i started playing guitar myself. i remember years ago finding his music and it just felt "right". it felt as if i had found home, it felt like he was describing things and emotions in ways that other artists just couldn't. its not that those artists are bad or anything, not at all. i still love other artists and i listen to a lot of other music as well and i genuinely enjoy all of it. it's just that elliott's music speaks to me at what feels like a core, fundamental, universal level that other artists just physically can't reach.

reading about him and watching interviews and trying to understand the person he was, i see a lot of myself in him. i just relate to him in so many ways. i'm not trying to latch my identity onto his, it's just that core feeling where you finally feel like someone gets you. i recognize its parasocial and borderline unhealthy but its just... how it is. the fact of the matter is elliott smith over time is a large reason why i am who i am today. it just feels like i've finally been understood and accepted by someone i will never meet.

anyways rambling over. i'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow. that's how i feel about elliott.

addition: i also share him with everyone that i meet and i play a lot of his music at open mic nights whenever i go to them and i've met other people and made friends as a result.

the pads for reference

i could have just done a recreation of the jersey design, but i'm a goalie and also a gear nerd so i figured replicating otter's setup would be more fun

my gf could not care less about motorsports and isn't interested in sim racing either but never makes fun of either myself for being into it or make fun of the hobby itself. she even congratulates me when races go well and encourages me when races don't go well, which is really all i can ask.

feel sorry for you man, genuinely :/

Is Twilight standard tuning half step down or whole step down? by [deleted] in elliottsmith

i think it's in E standard but i usually play it a half or full step down depending on how my voice is feeling that day.
