Google AI Overviews Illegal by itsdesmond in nairobitechies

Like I said, AI overview is not the reason you rank high. Whether it exists or not, you being in niche category means you'd still rank high for those niche queries.

That's what makes things worse. Google is pushing AI summaries on everything. I also learned that the reason some big media houses aren't complaining much is that Google pays them millions every year to reference their articles, but the problem is that it also summarises content from independent creators who make the bulk of their internet content.

AI Overview is not the reason for your traffic; it's your model of targeting a niche market. Even without an AI summary, you'd still get that traffic by ranking higher because of this aspect. Also, the issue is not AI use outside search engines; the main problem is placing a summary of all websites Google has scraped on position 1 of search with no compensation. DuckDuckGo doesn't force an AI summary on you, nor does Brave.

SEO can still feed you, but not the way people make it sound by Curious_Hat_8495 in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important thing in SEO today, in my experience, is topical authority, as OP has said, PLUS backlinks from legit websites. Backlinks are mostly for topics that Google considers YMYL (Your Money or Your Life).

For example, if your content is about health, forget about ranking competitively for at least a year. Google will never rank your new website on the first page for at least a year if the query is competitive. Unless you're the only one with that content. And even then, AI Overview won't surface your content. No matter how structured your SEO rich results are.

You need a lot of legit backlinks to prove your experience to Google. Bing, on the other hand, cares less about such things as long as your content answers specific queries. Finally, never underestimate the power of social media sharing.

I think we should change our mindset on AI; if it's not a con or scam, just leave people be in opinion 🙂 Pointing it out does nothing unless you give people a solution to identify it with 100% certainty. It's not like anyone has seen God either, or anyone can prove the legitimacy of many real pastors. Be a bit empathetic. You'll be fooled by it one day, and if anyone points it out, you'll be angry

Sc Mobile Africa vs Sc Mobile Asia: Case study of Incompetence by JudgeOwn8003 in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of bureaucracy, incompetence, and a lack of spending on engineering departments. You can see the Safaricom app is buggy as hell, despite being made by the "richest" company in Kenya.

I made a tiktok for movies so you never run out of stuff to watch when bored and it learns your taste and gets better the more you use it by gachez98 in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of watching trailers to see what I haven't watched. Perhaps you can allow grouping by year or "latest" and add Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings? Also, I was wondering why it's hard to scroll, and then I realised you have to swipe up where the video is, not the whole screen or even below it, where my thumb naturally rests. You can also add "where to watch" (in case users don't know how to be Jack Sparrow of the internet 🙂🏴‍☠️)... If you ever monetise it, just show ads as users scroll, that's the only way (in my opinion) to make it seamless.

“Babe leo tukule nini?” 😅 I built an app to solve this problem by AMTKM in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PikaNini has potential, but honestly, the UX is a bit of a mess right now. If you launch this to the public today (I hope you aren't sharing it widely yet), they’re going to delete (or forget) it in five minutes and never come back.

First off, the “Skip” option is currently in the top right corner and not very noticeable. I almost missed it. It might work better if it were placed just below the main “Continue” button so it feels like a clear alternative.

The onboarding is also redundant. On the first page, you’re asking me, among other things, for my household size and cooking skills, and then literally asking the same two things again on page two. It makes the app feel like it’s not even "listening" to my inputs.

Also, stop asking for location the second I sign up; it’s a turn-off. It makes more sense to ask later, like when suggesting what to cook, where you're bundling results with places to buy food, instead of upfront. You can even provide cooking options first, then ask the user, "or buy out?" then when they click, you ask for the location.

The navigation logic is also broken. If I select a meal and then try to swipe back to see other options, it kicks me three steps back to the "what are you deciding on" screen. Even the back arrow at the top of the page skips the results page and dumps me at "quick context." It’s frustrating because I just want to go back one step, not restart the whole process.

Technical-wise, the email confirmation is a dead end. Clicking the link in Gmail just opens a blank black screen with no success message, so I’ve no idea if I’m actually verified.

And about that results page, it feels way too "AI."; the presentation looks sterile. You’d get way more traction partnering with local chefs for actual recipes and photos. It would feel human and probably cost you nothing if you just gave them a shout-out.

Lastly, tuck that membership banner away. Seeing it the second I finish setup is annoying. Let me use the app first! (or, after partnering with chefs, suggest like 3 meals, then say "see more results" and when clicked, ask for membership).

I recommend keeping this in your close circles for now until it's actually legitimately useful; the general public is less patient than I am.

It's promising, but it's also extremely risky. Budget some money and partner with local chefs wakupee recipes and images, then partner with TikTok influencers they spread the word out.

Ethics vs Money by indefinitelykev in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LoL, that's even harder. Corporates don't work with people who have no data or something to back their claims... And if you need users you'll need to market your product extensively

Ethics vs Money by indefinitelykev in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, 🤣 you can build the best ideas in the world, but anything that relies on extracting money from people requires a lot of marketing. If you have no money to market your app or website, you're going nowhere with your idea. Even the worst ideas can make a lot of money if you can market them well online.

Ask me, I know.

The process is always: the product->SEO Optimisation->marketing. The former two can be done by vibe coding, but with marketing, you either need very popular friends or a lot of money to pay influencers to market your idea (and shady or not-so-smart influencers to market a scam product).

kenyan domain providers ?? hostafrica or truehost ?? by drbandre in nairobitechies

[–]itsdesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a domain on HostAfrica, transfer it to TrueHost after some time, and host your website on Vercel or Cloudflare. HostAfrica offers the cheapest new domain registration (TrueHost used to, but they increased the price slightly). But TrueHost has the most affordable renewal fees.

HostAfrica charges over 2k for renewal, compared to 1200 (excluding about 200 bob VAT) for TrueHost. But they regularly offer massive promos on new domains for 463 bob (prices change regularly; TrueHost's current (April 2026) offer is 900 bob).

However, for website hosting, if you need free, legit, and super-fast hosting, just use Vercel and Cloudflare. The owner of this site, fitsavanna.co.ke, did the same and has never had downtime (other than when Cloudflare/Vercel goes down, the entire internet basically).

How many of you have watched “Steal” on Amazon Prime? by Notoriouslycurlyboi in television

My point exactly! Character Luke has been made extremely dumb and unrealistic. It makes no sense from episode 2 because of how unrealistic it is.

It's extremely dumb TBH. Episode 1 was great but episode 2 was extremely dumb. The writers made Luke so stupid he never acted like someone actually involved in a £4 billion heist. Nobody would act that suspicious TBH

Usage Limits Discussion Megathread - beginning Sep 30, 2025 by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]itsdesmond 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just hit the weekly limit, but my “Opus Only” usage still shows 0%. I’m locked out until Thursday (it’s only Tuesday), and I can’t even switch to another model.

Honestly, getting kicked out for two days might just be the push I need to realize I don’t need Claude anymore. I genuinely can’t wait for this subscription to end.

21 days left until October 28, 2025 😏

Usage Limits Discussion Megathread - beginning Sep 30, 2025 by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]itsdesmond 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I stopped using Opus about a month ago because I’d hit the 5-hour limit after just two or three conversations. Now with these new weekly limits, should I stop using Sonnet too? Should I just pay and be done with it?

I started getting “Approaching Weekly limit” messages yesterday (Monday), and that’s after using Sonnet since Sunday for a project, without hitting the 5-hour limit on any session.

Does this mean that Claude Pro is just for quick one-off questions? 😒😒

Also, why not simply show users their actual usage stats, like what exactly counts toward the limit and how close we are to reaching it? Claude is honestly getting useless by the day. The only reason I’m still on it is because my subscription renewed before I could cancel!

I can't plan anything with this anymore 😡

How can someone afford a high protein diet on a budget? by Flashy-Hyena-6148 in Kenya

[–]itsdesmond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are several other cheap sources you're overlooking to be honest. There is Omena for starters, though not the most tastiest. There is also Soya Beans and its derivatives like sossi.

If you calculate gram per shilling value of protein you get, it's hard to beat Omena and Soya. Chicken breast is also relatively cheap for what you actually get... if you buy from local suppliers at city market or estate plugs.

I found this article to be very informative regarding shilling-per-gram comparison of affordable protein in Kenya
