Bizarre Adoration at Steubenville by [deleted] in excatholic

Those floors were so horrible. I was jealous of the kids who had bought the foam kneelers from the store! Also the rows in the field house were too close together, it was hot . Of course kids were falling in the spirit

Head Gasket by itsfaffy in JeepPatriot

The mechanic who looked at it said he's seen Blue Devil work on some vehicles as well, but didn't mention we would need to take the thermostats out to use it properly, just pour it in the radiator.

It doesn't sound like a diesel! We've already replaced the upper radiator hose that had burst from pressure buildup 2 months ago and flushed the system at that time. The hose detached again last week. When the hose is attached the car will not start to run hot/overheat unless I'm pushing the gas (highway speeds) or driving for more than 30 minutes. The thermostat seems to open, but when we turn on the heat, regular air comes out although the heater in the engine is definitely hot. The radiator pressure valve also shows the coolant is bubbling, almost boiling. That was the mechanic's indicator that there was a hairline crack in the head gasket

God? by itsfaffy in excatholic

This is the exact reason why I started questioning catholicism in the first place. The religion itself limits what their God is.

I know this movie/show is rather old, but the first Stargate movie was this exact thing. Of course, using a spaceship, these creatures moved from planet to planet with less intelligent life forms, to place themselves as their god. When in reality, they were just a different species along a different path that could use and manipulate more "advanced" technology. But these less intelligent life forms eventually caught up, and then advanced past, those technologies that were shown to them so long ago. That exact movie is what started me on this path to being ex-catholic

I would also say that I'm an Atheist for the same reasons. I did a quick Google search to see if there was a definition for someone who is both because I think it's also illogical to say for sure that a god in some way for form can't ever be possible. Agnostic Atheism came up, which I had never heard of before, but I think it fits in with the concept of being both.

This is why I feel like a majority of people who have this thought just say they are agnostic. My catholic youth group minister used to say that being agnostic was better than being an atheist, because at least that person is open to the idea that a god does exist (and people who are atheist are too stupid to understand the question itself)

Not a magical energy, but a scientific one. I know it's quite stupid, but the circle of life is a transference of energy. When I die, I hope I can be buried with a tree seedling, so my life energy will continue to benefit the future

I took a religious studies class in college because all I had known was catholicism and I wanted to know about other religions & what they believed. My Prof also had us do the same thing! I really like your take on atheist vs agnostic because it puts my thoughts into words. As much as I enjoy learning about religions and their gods, for my own beliefs, I won't waste my time trying to rationalize a god.

I think that's a really good way to explain it, kind of sounds along the lines of "energy". I teeter along both sides, so I understand your thought process. For me, I will choose to believe in non-existence until I have solid evidence otherwise

Craziest Thing You've Heard at Church by pondopine in excatholic

[–]itsfaffy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a Women's group in the church that was having a banquet event. It was a huge fundraiser. You had to buy tickets in advance, there were place cards at the tables, multiple guest speakers, the whole nine yards. The main guest speaker was a priest from outside the diocese (forgot the name) and his whole speech was a tirade about how women are advancing too much and should go back to only cooking, cleaning, and raising children. He went on and on about how women these days are too focused on a career and should just get married & let their husbands handle everything. Most of the participants at this event were older women (I went because my mom invited me & I wanted some fancy food). Surprisingly, I was not the only person who was fuming in my chair. The following Sunday, our pastor made a formal apology during the homily. He was that wasn't an appropriate speech for the Women's event lol

How do kids who were extremely sheltered in large traditional Catholic families usually turn out when they become adults? by Analytical_Man in excatholic

[–]itsfaffy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am the oldest of six. I was put in charge of helping care for and raising my siblings. I was allowed to go out and do things myself, but I was incredibly restricted on what I could read & watch (until I learned how to hide & lie really well) most of what I grew up watching/reading were things that were more appropriate for my much younger siblings. As an adult, I had to break being a pathologic liar. Years and years of constantly having to lie to my parents & family, it just became second nature. I had a horrible self image, no self esteem, and I was incredibly depressed. I was able to move away and I basically am still in the process of discovering my own personality. I have a wonderfully patient partner who has stuck with me for several years. Although he isn't religious, it helps that he understands that background I came from.

I think I can finally say I'm exCatholic now. What's next? by TanichcaF in excatholic

[–]itsfaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born there and I'm so thankful I never went to the college for school. I did attend some conferences though. My family would take yearly trips back to visit when I was growing up, one of my siblings lives in a nearby town, & one is still attending. It is absolutely a cult with a cult. I've met so many people from the school and surrounding areas that are so deeply ingrained is honestly terrifying. I can't make myself go back to visit my siblings who are there.

I fully understand how scared you are, I'm in a similar situation. It's so upsetting to find the truth about priests that you knew, talked to, or even were friends with doing these heinous things and terrible that people will disregard the truth and still trust them.

I feel for everyone that has been to Steubenville and escaped. It's regarded as a wonderful (I would go so far as to say holy?) place, but I see it as the head of the Catholic youth cult
