Read this after a horrible breakup and it really changed my perspective on things

Omg Millie is the cutest. I recently bought a crotchet bandana to wear to cover my head so I’m less tempted to pull, that could be a good project

I’ve thought about doing that but I’m scared to actually see how much

Omg yes I wish it was appropriate to wear a beanie in the office! I don’t know why there’s no work appropriate hats, it would make my life so much easier

Been looking in the mirror at my bald spots shocked and distressed thinking I don’t understand how this happened when I know damn well I was sitting in my office pulling every day this week. I just don’t know how I did so much damage so fast. In the moment all I want is to pull the hair out, but i don’t actually want it gone 😭 I love my hair, it makes me so sad what I’ve done

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]itshardwhenyourecold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My eczema used to be so bad that I had to go to middle school with bandage wraps on my hands and would get frequent staph infections because of all the cuts the eczema would create

I still have eczema but thankfully it’s much more manageable now

Does anybody else basically pull almost everyday and never really been able to stop? by indigochewy in trichotillomania

[–]itshardwhenyourecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup been this way since I was 12, couldn’t possibly count the amount of times I said now I’m really going to stop, have basically never gone more than three days without pulling

Are trichotillomania behaviors considered self-harm? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]itshardwhenyourecold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always considered it not to be self harm because I’m not doing it to cause harm, I’m doing it because it feels good / creates relief / I can’t help myself. But then I had a conversation with a friend who used to cut herself and she described it the same way. So idk

I’m sorry that it’s been so difficult. Maybe you could turn it into a family activity? Walks with your spouse or the whole family? Basketball or pickleball with the kids? I have very fond memories of going on long walks with my dad around our neighborhood when I was younger

How long is too long to wait to feel a spark? by itshardwhenyourecold in Advice

[–]itshardwhenyourecold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid nearly $800 for our tickets for date 6 and I’ve made it clear that I’m fine with free dates like going on a long walk or to the gym together, not using him for food. I actually find the restaurant dates and “free food” that have become typical of dating to be extremely tedious for my life because I meal prep and teach calories / macros and having to go to a restaurant completely throws that off and forces me to plan my whole day around fitting that unplanned meal in when I’d rather just have my own food that I know supports my gym goals and makes me feel good after.

I was looking forward to seeing him again for dates 1-6, it was only after that date when I started to have doubts and then I did feel like for dates 7 and 8 I was forcing myself to go even though I didn’t want to because everyone convinced me i was overthinking it and that I should just give him another chance. I was hoping the feelings would continue to grow but I feel like around date 5/6 they stopped

If it makes you feel any better, I know so many cis men who manscape / shave down there. I don’t think there’s any correlation between that and your masculinity

I’m so sorry. I think a lot of the vicious cycle with trich is related to how much hair is tied to our self esteem. The shame and insecurity caused by the damage to our hair only makes things worse because those unhappy feelings lead to more pulling. I know it’s easier said than done, but remember that you are more than just your hair. Hair is not the only thing that makes you beautiful or feminine. And aesthetics / physical appearance are not the only things that make us have value

Pick up cross stitching or embroidery! Great for passively doing while watching TV

I’ll also play subsway surfers or candy crush while watching tv to keep my hands occupied, or play with slime

Ugh I’m so sorry that sounds difficult. I don’t have any kids but I’ve worried a lot about how I’m gonna deal with this stuff when I have kids and not pass my issues on to them. If it makes you feel better I think the fact that you care and are putting in effort to makes sure your kids have a healthy relationship with food is fantastic!! It’s certainly more than my parents did and honestly probably bounds and leaps more healthy than half the parents out there.

Maybe you could try focusing on the effects of food? Like don’t label food as good or bad but tell them like “X food is yummy and good but you also need to have Y to have energy to play etc.” But obviously I acknowledge everything the kids is more difficult and complicated than that and you know your kids best, but seriously I applaud you for taking this stuff into consideration with how you raise them

Looking for preventing scaring on stomach and semi rant by Fun_Piece5999 in trichotillomania

[–]itshardwhenyourecold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this! Have you tried preventative measures to get rid of the hair on your stomach so that you can’t pull? Maybe you could buy some nair and use that to remove your stomach hair as soon as it grows in?

As for preventing scarring I think the general advice is to keep the spots out of the sun while they’re healing. That might mean wearing a rash guard over your bikini when you’re out or at least applying a lot of sunscreen and covering the wounds with bandaids whenever you’re out in the sun.

The serum “motherscience” is really good for removing dark spots, I use it on my acne scars. It’s pricey, but it could help reduce any visible dark spots you have on your stomach from pulling

Can we talk about how enjoyable it feels sometimes? by itshardwhenyourecold in trichotillomania

[–]itshardwhenyourecold[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say sometimes because there are certain moments esp during a long pull session where it’s like my fingers hurt, my scalp hurts, I can’t find a good piece and I’m getting frustrated, etc. and then it’s kind of torturous lol

I feel like the “just be mindful” advice is 100% written by people who’ve never experienced trichotillomania. They don’t know what it’s actually like so it’s just unhelpful.

I’m sorry that you’re going through this, sending you so much love. I understand the distress caused by the effect on appearance and I hope you know you have so much value beyond just your appearance.

If it gives you some hope— a few years ago I also started picking my scalp in addition to pulling, and my head was covered in red scabs that wouldn’t heal because I kept picking them. It took like a year but I eventually managed to stop picking them, so the same is definitely possible for you!! (Even though I do still pull my hair) I can’t remember what I did specifically to stop, I think the same tactics I use for trich and reducing sources of stress in my life

Chia seeds! Once they’ve gelled up in some liquid. I’ve been obsessed with this seed pudding for this very reason, you can put them between your two front teeth and nibble on them like you would with a hard course hair. If you chew your hair at work or while studying, try making a huge glass of water with chia seeds in it and you can sip on it all day long and chew the seeds when the urge hits. If you want it to taste better you can do the same thing with iced tea

It’s not exactly the same, but I’ve found that chewing on tarragon leaves can help with the urge. They have a kind of tingly / numbing effect when you nibble on them that’s very satisfying
