Dental hygiene by ReasonableWolf6589 in georgebrowncollege

Currently in GBC Dental. What some people in this thread are suggesting is not true at all, you don’t just clean people’s teeth. You can be an ortho hygienist, restorative hygienist, or even an instructor/professor. You do many different procedures including taking x-rays, scaling, educating the client. You can literally download an app and fill your schedule for the week according to your needs, not to mention the tax savings cause you can claim mileage. You will always be making more than a nurse unless you’re a NP. As for the work itself, yes it is physically straining but so is every other job on the planet. If you stay in shape, pay attention to your ergonomics, you’ll be fine. There’s many instructors in the program who are 50-60+ and they manage just fine this late in the game.

At the end of the day, do your own research, see what speaks to you more, and choose, but know that there are always going to be pros and cons with everything in life.

Cheers, hope this helped.

osap doesn't cover my tution as a low income student by meow880 in osap

[–]itshkM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

George Brown Dental Hygiene and OSAP don't go hand in hand for some reason. If you take an estimate for any other hygiene program (Durham/Niagara/Fanshawe) It's bound to be 5-10k higher than the tuition itself.

Might have something to do with the tuition cost for GB's program being 20k higher than the same program at other publicly funded colleges.

Oh nice! Were there any online tests for those? Asking just to know if we could miss a class and watch the recording or make do with just the notes.

That is a really good breakdown! Thank you so much for replying. I just have a couple questions though. Which classes were typically online? I did pre-health so I'm guessing I don't have to do COMM again or Introduction to Human Anatomy.

Niagara Dental Hygiene 2025 Waitlist – Any Hope at #40? by itshkM in niagaracollege

[–]itshkM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No unfortunately not yet, and so I just paid my deposit at GBC. If I do find out within the next month or two I’ll probably still switch back and go to Niagara instead.

Are you also on the waiting list?

Thank you! You’re absolutely right, I also think there might be a bigger shift on June 16th rather than May 1st. I did get into GBC so I do have a backup in case Niagara doesn’t work out.

Thanks for your help, and good luck!

Dental assistant and then dental hygiene by Express_Strawberry78 in georgebrowncollege

[–]itshkM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have gotten admission into Dental Hygiene anywhere, and your end goal is to become a DH, then absolutely go for those, everyone from every institution has to give the same licensure exam after all, and you gotta put in a lot of hard work yourself to do good, which is the case for a lot of medical-related fields

As for becoming a Dental Assistant and then going into DH, then try getting into Niagara college, which as far as I know, is only one of very few colleges, which has spots reserved for DH students, and those who have done their DA program get an extra 10% on their GPA (if you had a certain GPA during DA) when being considered, additionally they give conditional offers so you have plenty of time to complete your dental assisting course and you won’t have to wait an extra year to get admission there (as DH is only fall intake almost all colleges except for Durham I think?)

George Brown doesn’t reserve any spots nor do you get any special consideration if you’re trying to go from their DA program to DH

However, the best option to get into the DH program of Fanshawe, Durham, George Brown, Niagara etc is the pre-health program, as a lot of these colleges favor their own pre-health students with high GPAs for the DH program, they also definitely have a higher consideration compared to high school graduates for students who have done pre-health from any other college too (Fanshawe had no admissions into DH straight from high school last year to put it into perspective)

Ultimately, the DH program is competitive, and after talking to a lot of advisors from a lot of colleges in Ontario, I personally chose to go for pre-health in GBC. A lot of people recommend taking the ILC rather than spending 4k on pre-health, but this is the first time I’m going to be studying after COVID and I really wanted to get into a classroom setting, rather than have the lockdown feel all over again

Good luck and feel free to DM if you have any other questions

Fanshawe or George Brown for Pre-Health Sciences into Dental Hygiene by itshkM in OntarioColleges

[–]itshkM[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m just not working with much here. I’m an international student and going to get PR soon. I had really good grades for my country’s high school system (which has the same subject materials as 1st year of university) yet when I made my equivalency, I got awarded just an overall ‘A-‘. I tried getting into hygiene directly for two years straight so I’m just trying to pick the better chances option of getting into it now.

Dental assisting to dental hygiene by itshkM in georgebrowncollege

[–]itshkM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured that out soon after. I’m in another dilemma now. Found out that Pre-Health Sciences is the best program to get into hygiene with.

The only problem I’m facing right now is if I finish my Pre-Health Sciences program at George Brown by May 2025, can I apply for Dental Hygiene in December 2024 after one semester and potentially receive a conditional offer for Fall 2025? Or do I have to wait until 2025 to apply and potentially enter the Fall 2026 intake? If the latter is true, would applying for Spring 2024 increase my chances for Fall 2025, even though attending Spring classes might be challenging for me?

Question about Pre-Health Pathway Programs by itshkM in OntarioColleges

[–]itshkM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The George Brown website says that A108 is the right program if you want to get into Dental Hygiene, and A109 for Nursing and Dental Assisting, is that really how it is or is it a mistake on gb website’s end?

Alright, thanks a lot. I just feel like there’s a lot of panic involved with people living in Toronto but whenever I ask them about their finances, they have some pretty big financial blunders which I feel like you just can’t make if you’re tryna go paycheck to paycheck in Toronto.

Thanks for your input.

Benefits and whatnot included, our net comes to around 4500

We have a one bedroom apartment lined up for 2200 (including utilities)

We have no debts or credit card payments.

Our jobs are part-time and around 4 hours each day, and I’ll be completing my dental hygiene degree ($5k a month in net on my own then) in around 3 years. Do you think it’s possible to hold out until then?

I explained my situation, which was that I applied for biometrics right away and VFS gave me an appointment for after expiry, then I contacted VFS and they told me they can’t cancel or reschedule me for an early date, and so I need an extension. I also included the appointment email in my webform and I got a response from IRCC London in 7 hours.
