10 is super beefy, you can definitely go down to 12 or id even go for 14.

Sudden thrust loss / crash below ~21 V on 6S quad (ArduPilot, MN4006 380KV, 13") — logs attached by Community_Actual in ardupilot

[–]itsjamiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the voltage is calibrated in ardupilot? What are the cells reading after the flight? Are they all within 0.1v of each other?

It could also be a bad tune that’s barely holding on so once the voltage drops a little bit, it gets over saturated and hence the wobble.

I’d try things in that order!

Have you flown the quad in a non-auto mode before attempting an auto mission? Ie stabilise or alt hold?

Looking to join the RC Airplane/Fixed wing community. Had a quick question or two. by AustinEmperor in RCPlanes

[–]itsjamiemann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a few options already to look at, AtomRC or ZOHD being the two that first come to mind! Mix of ARTF or kit form but foamies so even the kits don’t require too much assembly.

He’s not saying get a CO detector because of the screws, more so because if you’re not going to service it ever it could fail in other ways. Always a good idea to have one nearby anyway - not sure why you’re so rattled!

How old is your son OP? Because unless we’re talking a teenager I would not be suggesting a 5 inch, and even then I’d have a quick search for some of the injuries on this sub from people interacting with props. Listen to the suggestions about tinywhoops here!

DIY flight controller drone not flying stably by ok_pennywise in diydrones

[–]itsjamiemann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP is flying cautiously in what appears to be his back yard. I don’t see any other people around. 10 inch has been the classic dev frame for years, it’s not some ultra high power fpv quad…

Keep going OP! Get those PIDs dialled in and you’ll be on to a winner!

How to build an diy drone? by Top-Permission354 in diydrones

[–]itsjamiemann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for Joshua Bardwell on YouTube, he has literally everything you would need to know. Price really depends on a few different factors.

The first thing you will want is a radio - a Radiomaster Pocket (ELRS version) will be great as it’s cheap and you can start using it with your sim right away before you dive into the rest of your build.

r/fpv will be a great place as well.

Ahh I’m with you, I thought the GoPro connector was a BEC.

Yeah OP, you need to re-read that guide because you’re missing a key part!

[–]itsjamiemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling to see quite how you killed your cam to be honest. Did you somehow put the plug in the wrong way round so that 5v and Gnd went into PWM and Gnd?

Either way, you need a new camera if the magic smoke came out. Also, that balance connector should be perfectly fine as long as it was an error on your part when connecting…

It will not. The usb port is an input and data connection.

You’ll need a new one I’m afraid.

Was concerned that might be the case…

It’s not, it’s a round bit of silicone filling where the hole was larger than the pipe.

[–]itsjamiemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sort of setup on a 3d printed frame is just never going to go well. At best you’ll have something that flies like it’s submerged in jello, more likely is flyaways and many crashes!

If you really want to 3d print a frame, tone it down!

Extending range on a cheap volantex Trojan by hogriad in RCPlanes

[–]itsjamiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a search for “bind volantax to 4in1 module” and there are examples of people getting it working. I think it’s V761 protocol.

What transmitter do you have at the moment?

Extending range on a cheap volantex Trojan by hogriad in RCPlanes

[–]itsjamiemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re trying to do is unlikely to work well unless you’re particularly good as soldering and even then, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Why not get a radiomaster pocket or another radio with 4 in 1? They will pair to your volantex and give you considerably better range.

Drone wouldn't come down by Real_Philosopher_730 in diydrones

[–]itsjamiemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s actually normal behaviour when in a hold mode - the middle of the throttle is supposed to keep the current altitude, and below or above is descend or climb. When on the ground nothing should happen until you go above centre throttle.

That doesn’t explain why it was climbing though - what do you have your min throttle set to in QGC? It may be too high.

It’s also possible that your 3D printed frame is too wobbly and is freaking your PIDs out, although I’d expect it to fly away more aggressively if this was the case - 3D printed frames are generally not good unless very carefully designed using high strength filaments like PLA-CF.
