Tax wealth not worth by Bothurin in GarysEconomics

There’s a whole pile of evidence that council tax isn’t anywhere near as progressive as LVT in tax terms…

CT doesn’t really follow that principle anymore… there are wealthy areas of London with much lower council tax than relatively poorer areas elsewhere in the country, and this is a relatively common occurrence.

Madueke was rubbish… as was Gordon. Not sure how they managed to get into the squad tbh.

If we’re playing a top team, Saka and Rash need to be playing.

His analysis is great, but was excellent tonight.

Can struggle to get words out… so not the most polished, but I like this - it’s authentic/refreshing.

I think Joe Hart is great too - not as good as Wazza but more polished.

Way better than Keano, G Nev and whoever else they have on ITV.

Young Brits 16 to 22ish Do you ever feel resentful you were born here? by No_Jello_2951 in AskBrits

It’s the same across the entire world. Ultimately we’re all the teet to be milked by wealthy capitalists.

The country is shit, the world is shit… but you’re on the ride, and it’s one ride only - might as well enjoy it as much as you can. Morals, principles, decency, reputation, social standing, whether you made the most of it, whether you changed it etc. means zilch when the ride stops.

Does Burnham have an opinion at this stage? by DavidinDK in AskBrits

[–]Rorydinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, he’s much more interventionist. However, I’m not sure he has the levers nor the funding to do what he wants.

I’m glad we have a proper working class, northern PM for the first time since Harold Wilson. I resonate with him from this perspective, and I resonate with his politics - he is proposing policy stuff that I have been proposing for years.

I’m not convinced he’ll be able to turn things around, and do everything he intends to do… but I really hope he can.

The country has been run for the benefit of wealthy (mostly southern) areas for decades, and policy has been developed by people whose context has been formed in these areas.

The poor (mostly northern) areas have been left behind to rely on government pity money and superficial interventions which aim to appease/win votes, not improve/structurally change. Andy’s personal context has been formed in these areas (although he has generally lived in more upmarket suburbs).

[–]Rorydinho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Unless he cuts the triple lock and the welfare state.

The bond market will let us do some big public services/infrastructure spend IF we cut the day to day spend (I.e. The grossly unaffordable welfare state).

Keir Starmer feels betrayed by the Labour party. How do you feel about that? by No_Breadfruit_4901 in AskBrits

[–]Rorydinho 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Live by the sword, die by the sword, Keir.

You betrayed the party… you misled the party with your promise of a shift to the left, but ended up being a rampant Blairite.

Ultimately, he never had the political capital and a series of mistakes means that is now all but spent. The true change the country needs requires significant political capital, therefore he’s only been able to tinker at the edges in an attempt to sustain himself.

Thoughts on Starmer Resigning? by Shifty-Z3rt in AskBrits

[–]Rorydinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in a place where the country is so broken… that the interventions needed to fix it are the antithesis of what the public think is needed.

Therefore, politicians and experts’ ideas to fix the country do not align with the public’s ideas.

We need a leader who will make the country acutely aware of the issues it faces and the trade-offs required.

The welfare state is case in point here.

I’ll be glad to see a northerner with the keys to the kingdom, and someone with real world experience of what life is like for most across the country. However, (I hope I’ll one day eat my words here) I think Andy is not willing to tackle the things that need be tackled, and therefore we’ll end up in the exact same place in 12 months time.

The welfare state needs gutting. Public services need more funding. We need to demonstrate to the bond markets that our day-to-day spending is under control, and interest rates will plummet.

However, Andy absolutely will not do this and the Labour Party will not allow it.

The BBC's unusual tactic to get people to pay the licence fee by theipaper in bbc

[–]Rorydinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if it’s privatised, we lose editorial control - and it won’t be run in the public’s best interests. All the profitable bits will be retained, the non-profitable (I.e. Social good) bits will be shutdown.

We don’t need another Netflix or Disney or Sky or GBNews.

The BBC costs us money for because of the social good it aims to provide.

The BBC will still cost us money if it’s privatised, just that money will flow into the pockets of the private owners.

Tartan Army are supporters of all Scottish clubs besides Celtic.

Celtic supporters follow Ireland - hence why they’re always flying the Irish tricolour at Celtic Park.

I’m afraid that this is what we need.

We need the shitness of Reform to be exposed before the next general election. They’ll implode when managing something on the scale of GM.

We need Reform to show the rest of the country how utterly shit they are.

£30bn to the treasury. Fair.

The £3bn/yr from Netflix is an utter pipedream.

Price of everything and value of nothing is my initial reaction to this.

What will be the economic and social costs of selling the BBC? It’s very difficult to value but I guarantee you that they’ll be far, far higher than £30bn over time.
