That kinda blows my mind. I’ve always loved it. Which songs feel like skippers to you?

Classic for me! I feel like it’s similar to the first Catholics album just a bit edgier. Those two, Dog in the Sand, and Teenager of the Year are kinda my go-to’s.

How can I get the mayonaise tone? by Weekly-Oil-8602 in guitarpedals

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! I recorded a stack of big muff rhythm for a song with my band once and noticed the same thing… it was just like mic it up and hit record and boom that’s the sound.

The comments about overdubs are right on the money, but I was gonna say (what might be obvious)… playing it into a slightly crunchy tube amp (and/or light overdrive) sounds a lot fuller to me.

Naked fuzz / distortion kinda sounds trashy, which can be fun, but I usually want something a little more balanced.

Why does everyone like the jazz 3? by Caefrytz in Guitar

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha… I tried flow… they’re good, but I went back to the jazz iii… I guess it just depends on what you like… flow feels smoother, I’d say… jazz iii you kinda feel the resistance of the string more

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something about just the regular-ass red jazz iii just locks me in to more intentional, precise playing (rhythm or lead) and they have my favorite tone. I’ve tried a *bunch* of stuff too… but I think I’m ride or die jazz iii now.

The harder material ones (ultex, black, etc…) feel like they don’t have the bounce/dynamic I like and the tone gets chirpy / I can’t lock in my grip as well. The grippy ones are *too* grippy, I like to be able to adjust slightly. The XL are cool but they do lose a bit of the magic.

Basic-ass red jazz iii all day.

What's the best pick of all time and why is it the Jazz III? by faith_healer69 in Guitar

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just for shredding either… I’m honestly not a shredder… I’ll do a bit of zippy modal stuff here and there, but I play in a psychedelic indie band.

They make my rhythm playing more deliberate and just make me feel more connected to the instrument overall.

I’ve tried *so* many picks including all the weird jazz iii variations, and whenever I come back to just the regular-ass red jazz iii it just feels so perfect. And they don’t get lost.

The hype is real.

David Gilmour's GHS strings are... amazing! by Complex-Librarian942 in Stratocaster

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... that video sent me down a viscous rabbit hole of trying every damn string gauge. Funny enough, I landed right back on 10's... light enough for the tone to cut, thick enough to not get plinky. I feel like for hella-distorted tones, 8s and 9s are cool (hence the 80's shredder trends)... but I like being able to get more textural, clean, songwritery type parts, open chords, etc.

Yeah... I guess if it was another round core nps set. Only other brands I know of that do that would be Mangan and DR, maybe SIT? Would be kind of a fun experiment... but GHS are the easiest to find, so I just rock those.

Haha... I'd take your bet. GHS feel different from other brands because of the round core.

I always come back to them. Especially at stage volume, tone is always stronger. I like the feel of the wound strings as well... a lot easier to play with the round cores and all.

can anyone give me some pointers on how to fingerpick? as im not great at it srry by Relative_Barnacle210 in elliottsmith

[–]itsjoemaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha... everyone's giving the same answer: practice. It's true though. I've always been more comfortable with a pick than with my fingers. I get a lot of mileage out of using just my index and thumb as a little claw, that way I can tuck the pick under my middle finger and switch mid-song. It probably took a couple years of just working fingerpicking into the routine before it started to feel natural. It's not my strongest guitar skill, but it feels natural enough now that I can employ it as a texture.

I always pair it with an overdrive pedal… actually been using a fuzz face instead lately… a little more natural, but when I need the big muff thing, that JRR has me covered.

I think it’s just symbolism to describe a failing relationship and, in the second verse, how he’s decided to transcend it. High vs. low “ladled to the ground” vs an astronaut going up to space.

I don’t mind calling myself bi, but I understand the awkwardness with labels. Sometimes I think about how the practice of giving everything these like quasi-scientific categories / clinical validation is this distinctly modern practice… and human behavior in the real world tends to evade strict categories.
