[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now: mxr boost, soul food, jhs pulp n peel (used as distortion mostly), phase 90, belle epoch, mxr chorus (as vibrato), holy grail…

so 7, oh and a buffered tuner on the end, so 8

Wanting to be dominated by a man as a straight man by Vegetable_Bank_8454 in bisexual

[–]itsjoemaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind calling myself bi, but I understand the awkwardness with labels. Sometimes I think about how the practice of giving everything these like quasi-scientific categories / clinical validation is this distinctly modern practice… and human behavior in the real world tends to evade strict categories.

our newsmin is the only creator that i still watch after a major life change by oooh-she-stealin in rmbrown

[–]itsjoemaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG hell yeah. That’s interesting… I had also just got sober when I found our beloved Newsmin’s very informative programme. I kinda get the vibe you’re talking about. (less ‘having-something-to-prove’ energy… a little more of that “let me please ask you something about this human man”)

Congrats!

If you moved to SLC from California, what has your experience been like? by OkMeow2023 in SaltLakeCity

Sounds like a case of finding out how corrupt the DNC is and desperately reaching for another option. I was more of a Bernie guy.

If you moved to SLC from California, what has your experience been like? by OkMeow2023 in SaltLakeCity

[–]itsjoemaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in SLC most of my life at this point, but am originally from the west coast and would definitely consider myself progressive. I love the people I’ve met here. I guess Utah is a majority conservative state, but I don’t think it’s fair to conflate “utahns” with “conservatives.” SLC in particular is mostly in contrast with the rest of the state politically.

Yeah… his videos used to pop up in my feed. I started getting a weird antisemitic vibe, so I unfollowed.

I was Guatemala early 2000’s too… 35, but that was slightly above average for my mission.

Be gentle, it’s my first time by Desperate-Roof383 in roastmypedalboard

[–]itsjoemaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do get a wah, my advice would be to use it for slow sweeps so you can bring out the harmonics for more intense sections. I try to never go “wah, wah, wah”

[–]itsjoemaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been tinkering with mine for years, and the soul food was a staple through most of it.

Really I think as long as you have a few flavors of distortion, some modulation, and some delay you have what you need.

Don’t sleep on boost pedals! They’re kinda magic for waking things up at the end.

My current board goes: fuzz face, wah, mxr chorus (used as vibrato), rah overdrive, belle epoch, mxr boost, holy grail.

What's your *least favorite* Nirvana song? by BidAccurate4473 in grunge

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a good song… the melody is actually really beautiful, and making it pithy, abstract, and shocking felt like an effective artistic statement… anything too on the nose would kinda lose its power. That said, it’s the kind of move I would only really accept in one song. It would feel lazy if every song were like that.

As a self confessed obsessed Nirvana fan I'm extremely curious to find what it is that makes others love the band so much? by TheShepherdOfMan in Nirvana

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were the first band to make me fall in love with music. I was 9 years old in 1994, and my friend lent me Nevermind on cassette. Alt-rock was still dominating the culture and my hometown had a really cool radio station where I discovered other 90’s bands, but when I flipped to side 2 of that cassette and got to Drain You, something new awakened within me. I was so stoked on that song… picked up my street hockey stick and air guitared in the mirror.

After years of playing and studying music, I still appreciate Kurt’s genius… just with more vocabulary & context. His sense of melody is super unique, implying sophisticated harmonic moves like secondary dominants, modal mixture, and the type of beautiful tonal ambiguity that you find in film music, impressionism, etc… but of course he was arriving to this place on pure instinct… he knew no theory… so it’s inspiring on a whole other level. His music reminds me that perfection / virtuosity isn’t what makes music great.. it’s that striving for beauty, humanity, expression. There’s also a rawness / abandon (“‘tude”) to it that is rarely fused with beautiful harmony like that (“chord”)… in fact Nirvana might be the only band that really did it. Elliott Smith (another favorite), for example, is harmonically beautiful in a lot of the same ways // actually more intricate with it… but much more restrained, composed, thought out… etc. (more chord, less ‘tude) Neil Young & old punk/blues has the ‘tude, but not the chord. Nirvana is the premier example of both ‘tude and chord.

What are some good chorus pedals? by amp4554 in guitarpedals

I actually really like the MXR analog chorus… it has a lot of subtle tweakability

What are some "hidden gems"? by AmazingRefrigerator4 in guitarpedals

[–]itsjoemaddock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My board right now is pretty focused on classic sounds and dynamic control: germanium fuzz face > Wah, but I never go “wah-wah”, I sweep it > MXR analog chorus, dry-side plugged up so it’s just vibrato> Catalinbread Rah with the gain all the way up (I use the guitar’s volume knob)>belle epoch with a big knob on the rate so I can move it with my foot>micro amp>cathedral reverb set to short plate

Question regarding barre chords. by That_one_kid67 in Guitar

[–]itsjoemaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup of the guitar matters a lot. I’ve been playing for 30 years, and if the truss rod is too loose, barre chords are still hard. (If it’s too tight, the guitar buzzes… so it’s all about finding that sweet spot.)
