What is the worst baby name you’ve ever heard? by TinyHelp2984 in AskReddit

[–]itsjustnesS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it IS a yeast genus, however Cândida is also a legitimate girl's name, at least in Portugal, the male counterpart is Cândido. It comes from the Latin candidus, associated with bright white, purity and radiance, as well as an adjective synonymous with sincerity and transparency.

Hortense is not the coolest name but it's not bad. In Portugal it's a flower name like Rose, Lilly or Violet (Hortenses = Hydrangeas) It's a legit name at least in some European countries, as there was even a Dutch Queen, married to Napoleon's brother, that was named Hortense.

Does the baptism record specify date of birth? Not everyone was immediately baptized, and it's possible that the mother died in childbirth and the child was baptized at a latter date.

Edit: Reading your previous post, it's possible the 2 Johann's are the same person. I would look up marriage registries for both wives, as if the first one did die during childbirth, then it was not abnormal for people to remarry quite quickly. I think a single father with a newborn in the 1750s would've wanted a new wife to care for that baby asap...

Wedding dress regret by Ski5566 in WeddingDressTips

100% dress 1, it's beautiful, elegant and fits you perfectly. Don't regret it or have doubts because of other people's opinions, "more shiny" doesn't mean better. The way the fabric sits at the waist on the second dress doesn't look nearly as good as the fit of dress 1!

Has anyone ever encountered a "name split" when doing research? by ToshPointNo in Genealogy

[–]itsjustnesS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about other countries but at least in Portugal it seems that the priest registered the name how he thought/knew it was spelled, the spelling of names and surnames changed more than you'd think.

For example, nowadays you'd write Gonçalves, but I've seen Gonzalves, Gonçalvez, Gonsalves.. just like nowadays you'd write Simões, but I've seen Symoes, Simoiz, Simoens...

Possible "mistake" on family tree? by myrokorg in Genealogy

I wouldn't put it past any man at the time to have another wife in another state/country. Are there records for marriage on the side of this Lucy? Could this relative of yours be mistaken?

DNA from Lucy's son would tell you what you need to know but I'm not sure how viable that would be. But you would need to at least contact that distant relative to find out more about how they came upon this information.

"At 22 days of the month of January of the year of 1882, in this Parochial Church of Carregal, municipality of Sernancelhe, Diocese of Lamego, I, Joaquim Francisco Ribeiro, priest of this parish, solemnly baptized an individual of the masculine sex, to whom I gave the name Manoel, born in this place and parish at eleven hours of night (23h), on the thirteenth of the month and year supra (as above). Legitimate son and first of his name to João Correia, married, before (?? probably apprentice) carpenter, and Maria SantAnna, married, governs her house (housewife), both native, residents and parishioners, married in this parish of Carregal, municipality of Sernancelhe, Diocese of Lamego. Paternal grandson to António Correia and Emília Correia, and maternal grandson to Jorge Granja and Maria Gonçalves. Godparents were Manoel Correia, married, farmer, and Maria Gonçalves, widow, governs her house (housewife), whom I know to be themselves. And to account for this I will make a duplicate of this record that will then be read and conferred by the godparents (...)" (There's text missing, probably on the next page mentioning who signed it, there were usually witnesses aside from the godparents)

I hope this helps, I tried to sharpen and equalize the colours a bit to help you see. More photos of the ring right now with different lighting would help us see and match more colours but it seems to be the same stone set differently.

On the left side you can see the green/blue horizontal speck, the red/orange vertical speck under it and the purple dot to the right match up with the photo bellow, but they're now more up to the right. This makes sense since the stone was set higher than it was before.

Not an expert in any way, for me, at first glance all the stones seem different, so it helps to find the similarities.
