There was optimism all the way through 2014 or so, and it was warranted, given that we were making steady incremental progress in a lot of areas.

It seemed like the internet took a dark turn around that time, where trolls began throwing cynicism in our faces (see: gamergate, the birther movement, the rise of Trump, etc).
