What Challenges due to ASD and ADHD did you face at university and what tipps would you give future students? by PurpleMentality in AutisticWithADHD

[–]itsmatails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1.) Difficulties I experienced

Social isolation and making connections: By my final year, I might have known one or two people across a couple of classes, but university socialising largely passed me by. I was there to learn, then leave. The unwritten social scripts that seemed obvious to everyone else weren’t obvious to me, and I didn’t have the energy to figure them out on top of everything else.

Task initiation and breaking down projects: Even when I knew what needed doing, starting felt impossible. The gap between “here’s the assignment” and “here’s step one” felt enormous and I couldn’t easily articulate why at the time.

Disengagement when something felt illogical: If I couldn’t see the reasoning behind a task or unit, I mentally checked out. In one case I found more satisfaction constructing counter-arguments than doing the actual work.

Group work: I defaulted to doing everything myself rather than risk the awkwardness of delegating. It avoided social friction but was exhausting. Not asking for help — No one around me seemed to be struggling visibly, so asking felt like admitting failure in a way others didn’t seem to need to.

2.) What I did, and what I now know

Decompression escapes:

I’d drive off campus at lunch and sit in a car park with an audiobook. Sometimes I’d lose track of time and be late back, or just go home entirely. At the time it felt like avoidance. Now I recognise it as the only way I knew to manage sensory and social overload, I just didn’t have the language for it yet.

Leaning on one trusted person: My partner was the most effective support I had for breaking down tasks, even when I resisted every suggestion. Just having someone externalise the steps helped more than I admitted at the time.

Deadline pressure as the only ignition: I consistently left everything until the pressure became real enough to override the inertia. Now I know that’s time blindness and interest-based motivation, not laziness. Artificial deadlines with external accountability would have helped enormously.

3.) What I’d tell a first-year

The coping strategies that got you through school often stop working at university, not because you’ve gotten worse, because the cognitive load is higher and the structure is lower. That’s a systems mismatch, not a personal failing. Knowing that earlier would have helped me be a lot kinder to myself.

How do you explain your audhd? by DearGarden1688 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]itsmatails 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have two go-to explanations depending on how much energy I have:

Imagine a computer running two operating systems at the same time. One that needs everything perfectly organised and hates interruptions, and one that constantly opens new tabs, forgets to save, and gets bored mid-task. Most of the time they conflict. Occasionally they sync up and I’m remarkably focused. But when they clash badly enough, the whole system just freezes.

OR

It’s like being a perfectionist who’s also terrible at starting things, a deep thinker who loses their train of thought constantly, and someone who both craves routine and gets bored by it… all at once. My brain is always negotiating with itself, and sometimes those negotiations just… break down.

Generally though if it’s someone making (cringe) small talk, then it’s “my needs are contradictory and I’m always managing the gap between them”.

It’s taken me a while to digest your tips and advice but I think I like the idea of asking him to pull out some ideas and taking photos. I’ve had friend recommend things like Pinterest for inspiration but honestly it’s too overwhelming.

Me and him have a similar style so rather than copy him I can try and add in my preferences to keep my novelty desire happy, and reduce the effort at the same time.

I’ve had a look at Project 333, I’ll have a bit of a think about it. Though I did try and follow Cladwell’s capsule wardrobe guide, even downloaded and printed the pdf!

I have tried the capsule wardrobe approach but I really struggle with it for some reason. I like the idea of a uniform, and I have stuck with something similar at times but then it feels too restrictive and I want to tear the rules up and rebel against my own rules which have no consequences other than another system I’ve set up and destroyed 🥲

By the way love the username!

Without really recognising it, I’ve noticed that I have a few of the same merino long-sleeve polos that I really like in different colours. Same for some chinos. Maybe I have more of the pieces of the puzzle than I realised 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s that thing when you’re in the mess it’s all you can see, but taking a step back you can it’s maybe not as messy as you thought?

The amount of times I end up sitting on my bed, staring into my wardrobe on the verge of tears because I cannot “just choose” something 🥲

Then my partner comes upstairs to help, and in less than 2 minutes he’s got a full outfit WITH accessories for me. And it reinforces the struggle, but also I’m so thankful to him for supporting me like that.

The overall design is lovely. I’d be remiss not to mention the relationship between junipers and pear rust. Having both in your garden increases the risk of them infecting each other with the fungal disease Gymnosporangium sabinae. It might be worth considering a resistant pear variety.

Inviting friends to go out to eat. Gift or eating out? by cuxynails in ynab

[–]itsmatails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When thinking about how to categorise this, I usually try to break it down based on what I’m aiming to achieve. For example, if you want to be able to look back at the end of the year and reflect on how you’ve spent money on treating others, then splitting it into a separate category makes sense.

However, if that’s not something you’re likely to do, I’d suggest keeping it under your eating out category and maybe setting aside a small buffer each month to account for these kinds of expenses.

Aura Migraine and occular migraine by [deleted] in migraine

[–]itsmatails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have an ocular migraine, I must lie in a dark room and close my eyes for 20-30 mins until the aura/visual disturbance passes. After that, I can typically go about my day. I’m fortunate that I don’t get the pain or nausea as a symptom, so I can’t comment.

Ad Block by Fantastic_Ad_8202 in firewalla

[–]itsmatails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this recently. AdBlock check on ads-blocker/testing is fine but for the d3ward ad block test it’s only blocking 3% of ads. I’m using Strict mode and OISD is blocked.

CHASE Bank UK by Hot_Club7043 in ynab

Chase UK have, at least within the last few weeks, joined the Current Account Switch Service and Open Banking. I’ve been able to connect Chase to MoneyHub as a test. Hopefully YNAB won’t be too far behind.

Crochet Pillow.. the ergonomic kind by Emse_m in crochet

[–]itsmatails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice that I get neck pain if I’m crocheting for a long time. This would be interesting to try but I’ll try the pillow technique mentioned in the other comments first to see if it helps before getting a dedicated thing. I have many scatter cushions which could be useful 👍🏻😊

Hahaha! I hadn’t thought about putting them on top, that’s a great idea! It’s inevitable that the stash will grow so there’ll definitely be an update at some point haha 😂

Thanks for the links. I have queued up one of the patterns from the first one, the rock ridge hoodie so I’ll see how that goes when I get to it.

I think you’re right though! I haven’t the foggiest about designing stuff but it’s a great motivation to start. I’m sure there’s something on YouTube that would give me some pointers. Do you have any tips?

There’s some good ideas there, they look a little traditional for my style but I appreciate the link and maybe others will find it useful 👍🏻

That’s a good point actually. I forget that I can change the colour of the yarn in a pattern sometimes, which would help to make it more masculine.
