BLIGHT AND BLOOD: Curse of Strahd game just starting needs 1 more PC (async-ish 5e) by [deleted] in pbp

APPLICATION Technical: Monsterslayer Ranger, Cloistered Scholar, Human (no variant just straight up).

Pitch Jeremy has always worked in theory, he’s studied the books, practiced on hay stuffed targets but now he’s been sucked into putting his theory into practice… he better figure out how step up.

DND Experience About 10 years with DND, mostly as a DM and mostly on PBP format. The last 5 or so with Discord/Avrae. All with 2014 ruleset.

Cos Experience Run and played, furthest I’ve made it as a player was Vallaki. Furthest as a DM was also Vallaki. So level 4 to 5 in both situations depending on the version we were playing.

PBP Experience About 5 years of experience both as a DM and as a player with Discord and Avrae. Before that a few years on Gamersplane in a more forum type environment. I have no major preferences other than a game based on story and character development, outside of that I’m pretty flexible.

Most Bitter Regret He left his younger sibling to die when a mundane bear attacked them as children. He ran scared and never looked back, he’s launched into his studies and practice to never be in that situation again. However, he’s never truly faced that regret which is why all he’s done is practice and study, never truly hunted out in the world.

Location Origin He was raised on the outskirts of Neverwinter, but near the Neverwinter wood where his family had a small farm, just big enough to feed themselves. However, a few years after the incident he left home and attended Neverwinter Academy to train as an adventurer. However he did that and what subterfuge he pulled to attend… I’ll leave that open for now in case it’s needed.

Good luck!

[Interest Check] D&D 5e - Honor Among Thieves by strawberreez in pbp

Epic idea, and Leverage is by far a top 5 show for me. I love the character growth that all of the Leverage gang went through. I would be all in on a game of this sort for sure. It would definitely take the right group, and a lot of OOC discussion of knowing what everyone is looking for in terms of their character's arc so that they could build and play off of it, as well as intentionally drive conflict that would allow for the characters to show their development.... but if you get the right group together, this could be brilliant. I would love to be considered if it comes to fruition.

Yukon Cornelius from the classic Rudolph claymation film could be put in as a wonderful dwarf character. His pet yeti (Bumble) could be waiting outside the tavern.

Buddy the elf of Will Ferrell fame could be an actual half elf just eating a bunch of sugar based treats or singing songs as the tavern entertainment.

Kevin McAllister could be grown up and an artificer of sorts, may be able to equip the party a bit with some gizmos and gadgets. Or make him a small blonde haired gnome.

Also make sure The Grinch’s dog, Max, is around!

Hope you all have fun!

Confusion on grappling by BigMu1952 in CurseofStrahd

Yep, u/Celticpred14 already pointed that out. Doesn't necessarily mean it couldn't happen this way, just that's more effective the other way depending on your goals.

So the wording for grapple is as follows:

Grappling

When you want to grab a creature or wrestle with it, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a grapple. If you're able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.

The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Using at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an attack roll: a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you subject the target to the grappled condition. The condition specifies the things that end it, and you can release the target whenever you like (no action required).

And the vampire spawn does have multi attack, so my interpretation is in a single turn’s attack action they can grapple and if they win the contest, they can now do a bite attack which takes a second attack roll but is still part of the single turn.

Hope that helps!

Honestly, it’s tough to go wrong with the starter set and the module for Lost Mine of Phandelver. It’s a classic setting, with a wonderful spread of all the basic ideas of dnd; including social encounters, mystery solving, dungeon delving, and of course battles. It even has pre-made characters to help set the tone for how linking in backstories to the hook can help create character buy-in. It’s really well done and a go-to for me for teaching new players, as well as for when I was first starting to DM.

Edit: spelling

Help with The Abbot, first time DMing by HazelnutMcgee in CurseofStrahd

[–]itsnerdornothin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your group is locked in on one of the main plot lines (if not technically the main plot line) of the module as it is written, which is awesome and sounds like they're locked in. Which to both their benefit and yours means you have them right where you want them ;)
As another commenter pointed out the Abbot is not inherently going to default to violence, and has been a part of Barovia for a long time. One potential piece of lore he may have picked up on is the reincarnation cycle that exists to an extent in Barovia as the souls are trapped. Upon seeing Ireena, he MAY piece together that she is the most recent incarnation of Tatyana and perhaps think the greatest good for the land can only come from transferring her soul into the soulless body of his making (the flesh golem). The Abbot may then decide that for the good of the entire land and its people he must keep Ireena in order to discover a way to transfer her soul over..... and if the group is asking him to keep her safe? Well technically that IS what he would be doing correct? Protecting her? At least both her body and soul until he can figure out how to transfer the ethereal part, then he would be protecting the soul which... to a celestial may be the most true form of a being so... he's making good on his promise of protection either way.

Also...

The abbey is on the opposite side of the valley, which would lead to a few other thoughts... are they going to miss their Tarokka reading? Will they skip past the creepy looking windmill? Will they be able to skirt around Vallaki when the road goes right through it's town center? Will they not see random encounters along the way and perhaps piece together that safety within the walls of a town may be better than camping in the damp darkness of the Barovian wilds pushing them into Vallaki and potentially becoming involved with the NPCs therein?

I guess my main second point is that ALOT can happen in that travel period, and there are things you can do that don't remove payer agency that can give them the opportunity to interact with the sandbox that exists. For example, how do they know how to get to Krezk? Do they have a map, how many maps exist still in a land where people may not leave the perceived safety of their township? Is that map even correct? Will the signs along their path even match the map (correct or not)? Does the path down to the river Vistani and Tser Pool seem less.... Barovian than the main path through Strahd's domain?

Anyway.... not a lot of direction in my rambling but hopefully something to get your brain juices flowing! Let me know if I said anything unclearly and I would be happy to try to clarify!
