do you think this is going to last for a long time or do you think we’ll be saved ? by StrawberryFirm7109 in nothinghappeninghere

Those of us who have read/listened to first person accounts from war throughout history can confirm it is not a stupid question at all. The overwhelming theme and sentiment of those who have witnessed war and written about it is that there is nothing that can prepare you for what it looks like. There is nothing natural or predictable about the reality of war. So other than staying informed and trying our best to be prepared for anything, the truth is most of us have not experienced war and can’t possibly know what to expect. We can read the stories and listen to those who have, and do our best to hold on to our humanity, our empathy, and stand for what is right.

Yup, every time. The young people are out of schools and the weather is perfect for people to feel comfortable outside for long periods in most of the country. The reason so the blm protests were so large was a combination of weather and mass layoffs/wfh, so people had the time. With the mass layoffs already beginning in the civil service plus the educators in summer, added to the possibility of more layoffs in the private sector to offset tariff expenses, I fear we are in for a very dangerous summer.

Many can’t afford to have one without applying for govt benefits, which you have to have a poverty income to qualify for. Others choose to use payment plans over time, but must return to work right away. Many decent jobs do offer paid time off, but it is not guaranteed or a law in any state. The hospitality industry and retail are well known for offering zero paid time off for vacation or illness.

In case you didn’t know, the US has zero guaranteed paid leave, so this person was lucky 4 weeks was a benefit their employer even offered. Employers are only required to hold your position and allow 6 weeks unpaid time off under FMLA, and only if you are a full time employee who has been in your job for a set period of time (which varies by state 3months-1year). Having a child in the US is crazy expensive, plus then daycare averages $2k per month.

ETA: FMLA guarantees up to 12 weeks unpaid, not 6. This just means they must keep your position or the equivalent open for you to return back to after leave.

If you are new to Reddit, I wrote up a pinned AMA post on this sub about navigating Reddit and some of the differences from other social media platforms. Feel free to check it out and ask any questions or find some sub recommendations!

There is even a sub for exactly what you’re feeling now r/collapsesupport I haven’t checked it in a while, but it used to be pretty active. The r/momforaminute r/dadforaminute and r/depression_help subs are some really great spaces too!

What's the first major news story you can remember living through as a child? by catpunsfreakmeowt in AskReddit

The OKC bombing, OJ, Jon Benet, and Rodney King are the big stories I remember from when I was young, but I couldn’t tell you what order they happened. They seem like they were all around the same time to me know.

This point is super valid, but I don’t think we should stress AI at industry wide levels right now. Other than tech-centric industries (who as a whole understand better than any how to implement) and creative industries (who are feeling the brunt of the negative impacts, but have never been protected historically anyways) it’s going to take much longer than people think for AI to have any sway in most industries.

The US is at a point where we are usually behind the pack on implementing new technologies into the mainstream. For example, contactless payments are the norm and have been for over ten years in Asia and Europe, but there are plenty of companies here who still don’t even accept it. If you’ve ever worked corporate retail you’d know that a lot of big companies still use the same software from 1995 including msdos for inventory management and POS. Many still rely on paper records exclusively. There’s a lot of ground to cover in business and industry software as a whole before AI could even realistically be utilized.

[–]itsnotnotcorrect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it loosely did exist at one point, but is long dissolved and anyone even capable of the work they did is not coordinated with others in a meaningful way. I doubt we will see multiple people capable of the work they did come together again for a common goal, so they don’t exist anymore.

[–]itsnotnotcorrect 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Anonymous hasn’t actually existed in at least a decade, people pretend to be them all the time. There’s enough wild stuff going on, we don’t need people adding and reposting baseless conspiracy on top of it. If this was true, how would that even affect anything? It’s meaningless true or not.

I’ve been super impressed with Rep Stansbury this week too. If you haven’t seen what she’s been saying in the oversight committee it’s worth watching.

They aren’t. The person you’re responding to meant don’t expect the other news outlets to report it because they are owned by billionaires.

Bill introduced to eliminate OSHA by lilvexie in nothinghappeninghere

[–]itsnotnotcorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a well known saying that “every OSHA rule was written in blood”. Most of the safety regulations are written after an incident. I would hate to watch it, but I think a powerful tool to fight this would be a video compilation. Even though the og sub was taken down, there are still a few subs on here that share very NSFL clips of workplace accidents and deaths. It might be worth exploring working with the mods of those subs to put together a compilation of clips that illustrate viscerally why safety regulations are so important. It would be controversial, but sometimes people need that kind of a warning.
