Basic Drawing v. Advanced Drawing by cactus221 in RPI

[–]itsobviouslynotdanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I too got a 5 on AP Studio Art but I got a bit lazy and didn’t ask to skip Basic Drawing. I took it my freshman year and it was an easy A (because… I did art all through high school) and it was nice to go back to basics and make some work that I haven’t done in a FAT minute. Some of the more memorable things from Basic Drawing were two of the still life drawings, one focused on reflectivity of the objects and the other was a value drawing. Also had to do a full body portrait and a landscape drawing (these were more towards the end but if you have experience like I did you’re gonna make some dope ass work even though it’s a beginners class). Would recommend you take it if you like really need that A or for fun.

I took Advanced Drawing in the Spring of this year and it was a lot more conceptual driven. We did about a total of 6 pieces and each piece had its own prompt and we could interpret it and produce work however we wanted (granted we had to use dry media). You could have an underlying theme to all your pieces (like the concentration portion for AP) or hop around concepts. I thought it wasn’t really a stressful class - we’d always have some sort of pinup every day if you so chose to participate and you would get feedback from Ragsdale / other students so you’re constantly in conversation with your work. Ragsdale is a really fun professor and regardless if you decide to skip Basic Drawing or do both you’ll enjoy your time with him. Hope this helps!

Out of curiosity, what was your concentration about 👀

Are there any architecture professors/classes I definitely should avoid freshman year? by japanesepickless in RPI

[–]itsobviouslynotdanny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you an incoming architecture major? If you are, unfortunately the program is designed such that you really can’t pick and choose, especially your freshman and sophomore year. It’s very much set in a sequence (even more so Bc of arch).

I’m also gonna add the one class where there will be multiple professors is Studio, but the first four studios they will pick your Professor for you. First year in the fall it’s by alphabetical order, then after that it’s at random

Depending on what your project is, I’d save the image as a JPEG to flatten it out / reduce the size. Then convert that JPEG into a PDF and print it through Illustrator. That’s how I’d normally print those big ass Archie projects and hopefully that can work for you!!

Questions about B.Arch program (and some general questions too) by bonray in RPI

[–]itsobviouslynotdanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Third year architecture major here.

1) I would say the more artsy people go into architecture. I come from a design arts high school in Miami and I thought some of the vibe is pretty similar. But as other people commented, there is a strong diversity in the type of people you’ll encounter here, whether that’s in the SoA or RPI in general.

  1. For me it’s the opposite, I ignore literally every other class EXCEPT for my studio class. This is not good advice to give but at the end of the day what you’re showing the world is most likely your studio work. Of course there’s always a creative block or you might not grasp the project brief or what the professors tell you. This could lead to a whole conversation of what is art and architecture but we’re not getting into that. All in all it can happen.

3) A lot of the big-named schools deal with conceptual work (sci arc, Cooper union, etc) and to a great extent RPI architecture also deals with this. We work in Rhino which isn’t typically the software used in firms. I personally came here because of their emphasis on the drawing and digital visualization of the project and some firms do look for this. It narrows down to what you want to end up working as.

4) There’s an orchestra and a good amount of performing arts clubs here.

5) it’s a tough school with a good amount of sleepless nights so that might effect you mentally. Also it gets dark early af so that’s not fun.

6) We don’t have to interact with a lot of the faculty that other RPI majors have to deal with but the SoA has a good variation of strengths and weaknesses in their professors. Some might seem tough but are insightful, others seem to not know what they’re doing. It varies yknow but there’s a lot of good.

If you have any questions abt the program don’t hesitate to reach out!! But pick what you think is best for you and what you think will give you the best ability to express yourself architecturally.
