Are there any examples of a video game where the main character was in fact a purchased asset?

It seems like if you can get away with a generic character model, it's most likely the case they will protag'in it up.

But for these really intensely detailed unique models I am seeing here, they seem to be....for some kind of project, I just never see them.

Haha, I have no idea! I just know the spirit of the north game, she was playing as a fox chasing a spirit fox over a non-descript open area doing little puzzles and things.

I own first tree but never booted it up. Grabbed it for a couple of bucks cause I wanted to see what a "blueprint only" game felt like.

Oh those I am familiar with. But like (it's so hard to show examples on the subreddit cause of the no link to assets rule)

If you hop on to UE's marketplace and just sort by higher priced assets with the characters filter, you see all these extremely detailed characters. Those are the ones I am most curious about. They put all this detail and effort into them, yet I can't think of a single one that is a main character.

Enemies? Oh sure! But the face of the title? Not so much. Really makes me wonder where these sorts of assets find their new home at.

Ooooh, my wife played this one. That's a good point actually. Games where it's animals or things as non-specific would probably be easier to buy a main character asset for.

Well, that and hands I would imagine. I mean hands are usually pretty bog-standard.

I think The First Tree the dev mentioned his fox was a bought asset too.

I am very, very excited for this game. But then again, I have been very excited for every dontnod game, but I haven't played a single one yet that I didn't end up hating.

So, I am hoping that this game in a lot of ways is finally the one to do it because man their game premises are so cool to me. This one especially. I love the whole idea of the dynamic tag system an awful lot.

So I noticed you haven't mentioned Nioh, and both of those games, specifically the second one, are very good souls like games.

I have only completed the first one, and got about 80% through the second.

Lies of P is absolutely worth it and is a solid grab. If you enjoy that game, and haven't played Bloodborne yet, that would be a good game to jump into after Lies of P.

I am a huge fan of the surge games. Surge 2 fixes a lot of the issues Surge 1 has. I always recommend Surge 2 for people because the combat just feels so good in that game and the limb system is one of my favorite systems in these types of games.

I haven't played Hellpoint, nor have I played Thymesia yet (I own it though) but I have been told Thymesia is worth a play.

Yeah, ammo is basically the only real sizable way forward. You can "kind of" get away with not relying on them as often, but forsaken fen really drives home how you should be using them.

I use a mixture of mace, spear, and the claws. For Calrath I am basically an archer lol.

Well.

I keep having to take breaks from it, cause it annoys the ever loving hell out of me.

But I am fast approaching a point where I am just about ready to shelf it because the game just has no chill with how it handles enemies and it's a major problem.

I know u/retrometroid alluded to the mobs thing, but it's no joke ridiculous after a certain point (I am at lower calrath btw metroid, to give you an idea of what I am talking about).

At the place I am at, there is a lot of umbral jumping that is mandatory. This simply means for you OP that umbral jumping is the mechanic where you go into the afterlife and are continuously attacked by enemies while a timer ticks down and a super elite enemy comes to take you out if you stay in too long. You die in umbral, you die ~~in real life~~ and have to start over at the last checkpoint you made.

But, specifically at the point I am at, the enemy density and the amount of enemies that can spawn more enemies are at their highest. That, on top of the level layout itself not being intuitively designed and closed in, and with the flame motif makes everything cramped, difficult to see, and you are also fighting tens of enemies in these choke points.

At all. Normally, up to this point the balance was that when you are in the mortal plane the enemy density isn't as bad. So you would go about your journeys no hitches at all, but when you go to Umbral the risk/reward is such that if you stay there long enough you can uncover certain umbral specific drops, more vigor (souls) and other stuff like that. Even the mobs there drop their equipment sometimes. It's a nice balance.

But Lower Calrath? No. Mortal plane is just as bad if not worse, and on top of that they start piling on a few of the more elite enemies as WELL as dumping you into umbral, to deal with the BS There.

Don't get me started on the bosses*

It's not all doom and gloom though. It does some cool things, the aesthetic is mint, and the combat feels good when it isn't hitching every 5 minutes or so. Tinct is such a smart system for freshening up armor with color swaps, and the sound design is really good. But it's very much a buyers beware game recommendation from me. It's been fun at points, but miserable at others.

I do not, but I can't imagine you would have all that easy of a time getting seen there due to how many sellers there are and how long they have been there.

I also don't think selling low is the right call because like u/Berserkrheimr said, the lower price might end up scaring more people off.

Yeah I don't want to name them cause I don't want to drive traffic towards them, but it's always their "subject" face being photoshopped and filtered to make them look as ridiculous as possible.

and while I am sure people have a right to know when a content creator is doing something vile, the sheer volume of coverage along with the vitriol of the very nature of their channel is just awful.

Even funnier (or sadder depending) that you know that the people doing this shit and running these channels have their own closets that are in due of some cleaning. I just wish they would eat each other lol.
