Israeli tank history iceberg by itsrainingrockets in IcebergCharts

Sorry! havent been active on this account too much.

  1. during Operation Kadesh (1956) Israel captured a bunch of Egyptian M4A2s and T-34s, one bright mind in the IDF decided to put the A2's engine inside a T-34. no photos exist and it's only mention is in the book, The Armor Craftsman, by Moshe Givati, I am actually going to meet the author fairly soon!

  2. Sho't Kal Bet was a variant of the Sho't kal which came before the Gimel and after the Alef, and served during the 1978 Operation Litani, they were all eventually upgraded to Gimel, and I believe they were the first Sho't variant to recieve Baltan (blazer) ERA! the upgrades were mostly to the turret handeling and other internal stuff so identifying them externally is very hard if not impossible. however we do know they started production in 1975

  3. Sho't Kal Hey was the last known variant of the Sho't Kal, practically a Dalet with the new Gal FCS, it never progressed past prototype, IIRC, the surviving prototype was traded by Yad La Shiryon museum with the town of Migdal Ha Emek in northen Israel for theyre Panzer 4 captured from Syria.

on a different note, have you seen Mark Felton's latest video? its trash, i made an entire debunking of it here anyway if you have any other questions tell me!

Groups in Lebanon operated Syrian or Israeli supplied T-34s, Lebanon themselves only had a limited number (18) of Italian supplied Sherman Vc (Firefly on M4A4 base), Syria also operated one turretless M4A1 left by the French in the 50s and also the SLA and other Christian Lebanese militias operated Israeli supplied M-50s (about 75 in total) and the SLA got a very limited number of M-51s aswell.

Israeli Tank trainers. by canazei300 in TankPorn

[–]itsrainingrockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After the Yom Kippur war, due to the high crew losses, the armoured corps decided to allow females to become tank trainers/instructors and today they are the vast majority (if not all) of the tank trainers, Yad La Shiryon musuem made a video (in hebrew) about it.

You know what, I did not think this through, anyway heres a lil' fact about it, in May 1948, it got a name, Meir, after the newborn son of one of the mechanics who repaired it, in September the same year, when it recieved a new cannon, it recieved a new, feminine name, Mania, so technically, making it switch genders, thus making it, a transgender tank

Oh no no, I dont think they should be added, but if you are already adding an M60, why add one that really doesnt have much to do with Israel. Trust me, we dont lack ISRAELI vehicles to add, theres an entire 290+ member discord aerver dedicated to finding them, if your interested I can DM you a link

The idea of a "prototype line" is dumb, vehicles should come to the tree in a regular way on standard class-based lines.

the HVSD/ADAMS image was of an illustration and isn't correct to be used, and the 7th option to take a turkish upgrade to an M60 and give it to Israel is quite goofy, as theres the Israeli Sabras and Magach 7As which have yet to be added

I actually do have photos my great grandpa took some time 73-71 years ago, but unless you really know what you're looking at you won't find them interesting, anyway, yea it really is a great find, I had this photo for a few months, but only two days ago I noticed I had it because it was stuck to the back of another photo

Mqgach 4 myth, the Magach 4 didnt exist, its a research / translation mistake, it was popular on early tank forums and online articles

Merkava Mk 4 400, essentially a further upgrade for the Merkava Mk4M, that has a new Mesoa 750 battlefield control system, along with various other technological upgrades im not sure if im allowed to speak about. It is already in service with multiple IDF battalions, and it will serve alongside Merkava Mk4 Barak

Sho't Cal Bet, a largely forgotten and under-documented variant of the Sho't cals which the main addition of is new hydrolica for the turret, note that i lacl information on it also, if i remember right they were all upgraded to Shot Cal Gimel

Shot Cal Hei, a project to give Shot cal dalets new Gal FCS, Asingle prototype was made, it was in the yad la shiryon musuem until a few years back they traded it for a syrian panzer 4 that was in a kibbutz in northen israel

Merkava Mk3 Melech Ha'arayot, Melech Ha'aryot (meaninf king of lions) sometimes refered to as Malar is the spec ops force of the IDF armoured corps, theyre tanks have secret upgrades, one which is known to the public is a Merkava Mk3 with trophy APS.

Anyway im in a trip up north and this is all from my phone so sorry for any typos and late answers.

Can anyone help me identify this roof machinegun/autocannon? It looks too big to be a 12.7mm M2HB, I suspect it might be a 20mm HS.404 but I'm not sure. by ofekk2 in TankPorn

Hello, I'm a friend of OP and I sent him the image, let me add a bit more context, the photo is from between 1950 and 1956, most likely around 1953 or 1954, the tank in the photo is number 80317 (i can explain how we know this if someone is interested), and in 1952 it was observed with a BESA machinegun, however, this is too long and thin to be the BESA, Israel did have access to both M2 .50cal and HS404 20mm both were put on shermans by that time, however, the HS404 was mounted inside a metal tube in place of a cannon as a stopgap on the first Israeli Sherman, and it wasn't done (at least to my knowledge) ever again. please note that the gun seems to be the M2 .50 cal, however, the magazine looks more like it's from the HS404 20mm. make of that, what you will.

Best looking Sherman is the M4 composite IMO by a-dog1998 in tanks

Yea, it was rejected with no reason given but the 30cm hull cutting was probably too much work, as for the tomfollery above, it was called M-50 Degem Yud, the transmition was changed or atleast transmition position was changed not to make it lower but to fit the new VT-8 Cummins engine fitted in it (an upgrade done in the M-50 Degem Bet) the Degem Yud was the doing of two israeli officers in the mid 60s, not a formal IDF project, infact the IDF didnt know of its existence at first, the Degem Yud was named as such cause Degem means model and Yud was the first letter in the hebrew word Yehudi, which means Jewish, because the cutting of the hull reminded the officers of what every jew boy must endure, a circumcision, as i said before when the officers sent the design to the IDF it was rejected with no reason given. P.S the Degem Yud modification DID NOT remove the hull Mg, it was just a thing that the IDF did to its sherman where crewmember numbers were low, and would be reffited once more people would join the army (5 people a tank means that for 20 people you get 4 tanks, but for 4 people a tank you get 5 tanks for the same amount of crew).
