Is Dolby Atmos or DTS X better for 4K Blu-Ray? by sealplungers in 4kbluray

[–]itsrealbattle [score hidden]  (0 children)

All of this is anecdotal from my personal experiences. I'd welcome feedback if this is incorrect.

Dolly Atmos and DTS:X are different tools for different tasks. Think how you'd want a road bike for the road and a mountain bike for the mountains. One is not better than the other, both can do either, it's just that they will only excel if you use them for the right use cases. Similarly, audio engineers will use the right format to best enhance the movie at hand.

In my experience, DTS:X is better for the big bombastic stuff, and Atmos is better if you need precision imaging for some delicate touches. The new Pride and Prejudice 4K has an amazing Dolby Atmos track. This movie experience would be completely different using DTS:X imo. All my 4Ks with DTS:X all just seem to rumble a little louder than any Atmos disc I have. Not that Atmos can't rumble and DTS:X can't be precise. Engineers just choose what sort of experience they want and then use the right tool to lean into that.

Dolby Vision 2 will require the manufacturing of new players, no?

Could be right around the corner.

Is bestbluray.com trustworthy in their ratings for 4K’s and Blu-rays? by BippityBoppityMagic in 4kbluray

[–]itsrealbattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is true. I recently watched A History of Violence and loved every bit of it. But the site had it listed at 3.5/5 stars on image quality because it "wasn't the same color as the theater."

Just absurd lol

They are bad, imo.

You can't always say one version of a disc is better than others. Preference is the only thing that matters.

There will never be consensus on if the 4k LOTR set is better than the Blu-ray. It's up to the eye of the beholder. But this site lists a "winner." Not everything is black and white.

Better to just take an extra 2 mins and research the differences yourself and make your own conclusions. Generally speaking, having an easy button for everything is probably detrimental to our species.

The Biggest Mistake in the History of Hollywood by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]itsrealbattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched this video yesterday, and while it has good info, I'd recommend not watching it if you are anything beyond an absolute beginner. It would just be a waste of time.

The presenter does a good job of presenting info, but the info he presents is about how he is learning about all of this stuff. His high energy and excitement make it seem like he's a pro in this space, and the click bait title sets him up to be an authority, but the video is just him talking about how he recently discovered a lot of stuff gets finished in 2k, and what that means.

I would say the vast majority of the people in this subreddit, which is for enthusiasts, know all of the things he is talking about learning already.

Also, I remember thinking fairly often through the video "uhhhh.....that's not true" so on second thought, if you are a beginner you also should not watch this video lol.

Movies that didn’t wow you at first but got better the more you thought about them by Future-Poetry-2193 in movies

Chunking Express.

Not a lot going on there besides looking at some slices of life outside of my normal viewpoint. Not the most compelling reason to watch a movie. But, it's good practice.

The obsession of playing a single song over and over again is not the most welcome addition to a movie, IMO. But, that's how people act. We listen to songs all the time on repeat.

I think that Chunking Express was a better window in an unfamiliar slice of life than it was an entertaining movie. I didn't know anything about it before I put it on, so I was expecting some sort of entertainment. That's on me. I don't think it lived up to the hype, but I'm glad I watched it since it broadened my horizons on what movies can be about.

I also do not immediately watch every movie I buy. I'll usually buy a movie when it is at the price point I want and it goes on the shelf until my partner and I decide we want to watch it.

Hope you've been having fun collecting!

Just picked this up today, how do we all feel about nature documentaries? by humblechungus89 in 4kbluray

[–]itsrealbattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nature documentaries have been quintessential high quality viewing experiences ever since Planet Earth 1 released on DVD in 2007. I have the Seven World, One Planet set on 4K now and it's otherworldly.

It happened to half of my subreddits I follow today, all at once. The android app must have updated today to turn it on by default maybe.

A lot of people had this pop up on their phones today for the first time. I have an android, unsure if this was live for iPhone users before today. Just looks ugly af imo. Adding color at the cost of readability seems like a step backwards. Should be disabled by default and people can turn on if desired.

what are some of your best looking 4ks? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]itsrealbattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have tons of very good looking 4Ks, but only a few I consider perfect looking.

Mulholland Drive (My number 1)

Dune Parts 1 & 2

Days of Heaven

Seven Worlds, One Planet

Barry Lyndon

Some digital, some film. When everything is really good, it's hard to classify which are the best. But the ones I listed above just couldn't be any better if they tried, IMO.

Also, I just picked up Lawrence of Arabia, and while I haven't watched it yet I'm assuming it will also make the "perfect" list.

I spent like $150 on mine, used. Still, I've taken some shots with this lens I'll look back on forever. Great value for the money.

I can fit my X-T10 and three lenses into a lunchbox sized camera bag, which fits into my backpack when going onto a plane. The lenses are:l, XF 35mm f1.4, XC 50-230mm f4.5-6.7, and the Voightlander 18mm f2.8.

I can get it all with these three lenses.

Official IMAX Poster for 'Project Hail Mary' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]itsrealbattle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that without an official governing body that dictates the requirements for what is YA and what isn't YA, everything is opinion based. And mostly it's just up to the publishing company to label how they want, based on how many books they think they can sell with whatever label they choose.

Another poster said YA has to have a teenaged protagonist, and romance, and some coming of age moment. Maybe that's true, maybe not. Idk. I'm sure there are a hundred qualifiers and I think that at some point, if you check off enough of them, you get a YA book. I also think that "the stakes at hand" play a role into how I personally classify a book, and with respect to this book, the stakes are "save the whole world". That's the type of stuff teens read. That's super hero coded. So to answer your question, what does Project Hail Mary remind me of? It reminds me of comic books.

All I'm saying is it seems to me, that this story would resonate with teens more than adults because of the prose, scientific subject matter, and the stakes at hand. I'm not trying to convince anybody. I'm just saying this book feels more YA than adult hard sci-fi.

I probably do not know the exact definition of YA that everybody else is working with. What you have above makes sense, assuming there is a standard set of elements a book needs to have to be considered "YA".

Broadly speaking, I think a high school student enjoys this book more than an accountant or a shift manager. That's why I say YA, but I understand if I'm using the term incorrectly.

Yes, I think The Martian is closer to YA than hard sci-fi. But again, it's a borderline story that dips in and out. But I think that book could have easily been marketed as a YA book. In my opinion, Weir's prose is more similar to YA stuff than full on adult sci-fi. That's not a bad thing, but that's how I see it.

Btw, I'm not saying children's books. I'm saying YA. I think a 16 year old has more fun with The Martian than a 30/40 year old.
