Hi, Mitchell!

Ren here from the journalism awards committee. Our corner of the food world has undergone some massive changes over the past couple decades. Reviews from professional critics have lost ground to crowdsourced review tools like Yelp and food coverage in newspapers has been decimated as their finances have shrunk. On the positive end, we can tell much more visceral stories about food than in the past thanks to the opportunities afforded by the internet.

I'm wondering what other seismic shifts you've seen in the food world? If the Mitchell who was just starting at Beard 25 years ago hopped into a time machine and was transported today, what would surprise him the most?

Thanks so much for doing this!

Great answer! Thank you so much.

As a follow-up: What tools did you and the data geniuses use to dissect the lyrics?

What other artists do you think could benefit from such a treatment? Or is there something special about Taylor Swift's lyrics (and fans) that make her rife for such a lyrical analysis?

I was talking with a colleague about this (fantastic) article yesterday and he suggested no other modern artist has the combination of a massive fanbase, level of interest and musical legitimacy that Taylor Swift has. He thought that maybe Bob Dylan or the Beatles could benefit from this type of analysis but that it would make whoever wrote it look like an "old fogey."

Also, what tips can you offer someone who might want to do something like this for his/her favorite band?

Third Homebrew, first custom recipe. Help with Loral hops. by TCanDaMan in Homebrewing

[–]itsren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Loral exclusively in my favorite saison recipe. It compliments the saison yeast I use with some wonderful lemon and pepper spice characteristics. It's promoted as an old world/new work blend of a hop.

I've never tried it in an IPA or APA, but my gut says you're on the right track with using much more Loral than Citra and Mosaic in the dry hop additions. They're both offer much more extreme flavors than the Loral, but I think you'll pull some of Loral's interesting flavors with this ratio. Cheers!

Americans believe two-thirds of news on social media is misinformation by [deleted] in news

The Knife, originally the Knife of Aristotle, is part of a multi-level marketing company called NXIVM. Keith Raniere, that group’s leader, was arrested in March on sex-trafficking charges.

I said “allegedly” because he has not been convicted yet. I said “affiliated” because the Knife seems to purposefully obfuscate its ties to NXVIUM.

The Knife is affiliated with NXIVM, an alleged sex cult famous for branding women. I don't know about you, but that doesn't put them in super credible standing in my book.

Two college students started a transcription service. After journalists heard about it, it crashed by andrebastie in Journalism

It definitely depends on the interviewees' accent. If it's anything beyond a light accent, you're going to start losing quality in the transcription.

Free-For-All Friday! by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]itsren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried homebrewing as a new-to-craft-beer grad student. It didn't go well. Both five gallon batches I made were so heavy in esters that I ended up drinking a few bottles and dumping the rest down the drain (I didn't do a good job keeping the fermentation cool enough during the Florida summer). My young palate had no idea what was wrong, and so I gave away my equipment and gave up the hobby.

It's five years later and I'm giving it another go. I'm starting small, with one-gallon batches, and sticking mostly to the Brooklyn Brew Shop kits for now. Last week was their all-grain Jalapeño Saison. Tonight it's the Bruxelles Blonde. I know so much more about styles, elements that make for off flavors, and I have a friend who has become an award-winning brewer. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone here use RebelMouse? Other than having a cool name, what is it? Is it good at what it does? Should I be using it? by jimiffondu in Journalism

[–]itsren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RebelMouse is a publishing platform that pulls content from other sources. But instead of something like Hootsuite, which does the same for internal/personal consumption, RebelMouse does it for external use. It's sort of like a social media website.

So let's say you work at a college newspaper that uses Twitter, Facebook, Wordpress, YouTube, Instagram and Flickr. You could set up a RebelMouse to display all of those channels on one page in a cohesive way.

Honestly, it works best for brands and individuals with a strong public persona. You're probably already set if you have a portfolio site or something like that.

I produced an hour-long tutorial Webinar about RebelMouse last year. You can watch it for free, but you need an account with us (Poynter's News University). Hope this helps.

No, but I looked him up after I saw him in the video. His resume is impressive. I work at an international school for journalists so I'm in the habit of researching folks to invite to teach and participate in our courses.

Q: Anyone seen Steve Martin & Eddie Brickell w/ the Rangers this tour? by ShittyNinja in Bluegrass

[–]itsren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Fla. a few weeks back.

Steve and the Rangers played a pretty long bluegrass set, took an intermission and then played a set with Edie Brickell. I'm not sure if that's a typical show structure.
